You couldn't be more wrong. It isn't your race that's making you do anything. You might find more of an attitude in one race than another, but it is not your race that is doing it.

That's not what I said at all.

The people who *care* in this thread are mostly insane, throwing around racist buzzwords like "white privilege".

The rest of us are rightly calling this a joke. We're laughing at how absurd it is and how seriously the usual suspects take this stuff.

I'm not really seeing where "the rest of us" are laughing. All I see are rude comments meant to jab opposing viewpoints and an occasional joke.

It's amazing.

These people have absolutely NO idea.

"What's the problem? Why would anyone want to show a different skin color? A little black girl should be fine with a white emoticon!"

lol.

You are such a fool. They aren't showing a "different" skin color from what was there before because BRIGHT YELLOW is not a skin color to any human on this planet.

I think it's fine to introduce multi-colored versions of these:

##################✊✌️#✋#######☝️#######################

The yellow emoticons on the other hand seems pretty race-neutral to me... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

lol @ "corrupting" the white emoji set with different skin color.

Right..

Don't put words in my mouth. I said nothing of the sort. You did. I could care less but also don't get why they are making an issue out of something that doesn't exist.

These are the kind of emoji characters that need to be allowed different skin colors.

It would be inappropriate to only have them as white.

Some people think it's stupid because they believe only white people should be represented in the world.

We call those people "racist".

The best part is that they don't know it.

come to think of it; i think it's pretty racist that this smilie => : ) is made up of black characters

There are many ways to appear neutral regarding gender and race, but skin tone isn't one of them, this is a very good move. Racial division is becoming more and more silly as we meld over time. The only identifying factor left is skin tone, and everyone deserves to attribute one that is as like or unlike them as they desire. Those that protest this inclusion, and especially those who are not represented by the standard caucasian emoji, but say they don't mind, think they are oh so post-racial that it doesn't matter to them, you are enablers, practicing faux anti-PC snobbery, try again at proving just how hip you are, cuz I see BS. It comes from the common denominator in our society that the oppressed align with their own oppressors in order to feel empowered. But it separates you from what you really are, where you come from, and that's a soul-stealing practice. Be proud of your individuality and ultimate liberty, but get real, practice empathy and kindness toward others. Your convoluted exclusion-based politics are showing.

I'm disgusted by people who complain about things like this. Does it really hurt you so much for other people in the world feel less marginalized?

Any white person who is educated on social issues understand why this is a good thing, but many who don't see the point can't even seem to take a moment to realize that not every feature needs to be geared directly to *their* ego.

You’re misrepresenting the argument; it's a straw man. I don’t think anyone here wants to marginalise people with different skin tones. The issue is rather that this new standard drags these emoji into a political sphere that they weren’t in before. Those smileys depicted by the OP don’t have a skin tone presently, but they will have one soon. I am not against this new standard, but I argue that the step is unnecessary. It adds complexity to a set of simple icons meant to convey emotions in instant messaging.

I think it was a mistake from the beginning to turn these specific icons into ones depicting Caucasians. It wasn’t exactly necessary. But the better response, in my opinion, would be to change these into generic ones rather than to add new ones with different skin tones. It would have been the easiest solution by far and it wouldn’t marginalise anyone now and no one down the road. Just for illustration, suppose these exact icons will have darker skin tones in the future. What should we do with the hair styles and clothing colours? Aren’t these a bit sexist?

MacRumors mods, can you please close down this thread? It's getting out of hand. :p

I will just stick to typing : ) or ; ) for mine. I don't need any others and I don't need it made into a cartoon face.

I'm curious to hear how this will ruin your emoji experience. Please elaborate.

It won't. I couldn't care less about emoji or emoticons or whatever. You know what, I've changed my mind. This is an excellent idea. Emoticons are apparently deeply embedded in the fibers of our sociological values and we should embrace a full array of diverse choices when choosing the skin tone of a smiley face. I actually feel foolish. For so long I have had my head buried in the sand ignoring my own racist behaviors by not wanting more skin tone choices for emoticons. I apologize to anyone here who I offended.

I agree with this.

Unfortunately, you're wrong here. There is one race I can think of that the yellow emoticons relate to:

Finally someone with some intelligence. I disagree, there are quite a few people here marginalizing people with different skin tones, they just don't have the knowledge to know they are doing so. And if it weren't for these select people, a creation of new emojis would not be an issue at all. This affects no one but the people who want to use the new emojis, because well, now they can. It's the people who think this is an issue, that are making it political.

Great, when the update with this rolls out, girls are going to be complaining that they don't have the extra 5MBs of free space needed (for all the different colored emojis) to install it OTA...
