Seems pretty white to me?

You think emoji were made by white people to represent white people?

Finally someone with some intelligence. I disagree, there are quite a few people here marginalizing people with different skin tones, they just don't have the knowledge to know they are doing so. And if it weren't for these select people, a creation of new emojis would not be an issue at all. This affects no one but the people who want to use the new emojis, because well, now they can. It's the people who think this is an issue, that are making it political.

The original emoji set was very white.

That alone caused it to be dragged into the political sphere.

Would your reaction be the same if all the original emojis were of a black skin color?

Remember, this racial bias affects people as they grow up, with toddlers using iPads these days..

It won't. I couldn't care less about emoji or emoticons or whatever. You know what, I've changed my mind. This is an excellent idea. Emoticons are apparently deeply embedded in the fibers of our sociological values and we should embrace a full array of diverse choices when choosing the skin tone of a smiley face. I actually feel foolish. For so long I have had my head buried in the sand ignoring my own racist behaviors by not wanting more skin tone choices for emoticons. I apologize to anyone here who I offended.

Not wanting more skin tone choices doesn't make you racist. People are using the racist word too flippantly here. The fact that when emojis of different skin tones were created, you took an issue with it, makes you ignorant. Don't take that as an attack on your character either, it isn't meant as one.

i think people have trouble with the ones mentioned in the original post NOT the ones you have shown

Even that complaint is dumb.

The new spec allows one to color those yellow smiley faces any way they want them to.

This is a great idea.

Hey, sometimes I feel black smiley and other times I feel white smiley. Finally I can express what color I'm feeling at any given time.

Finally

Not everyone lives in Springfield, you know.

Also, people from Cheron are furious about their exclusion from this new proposed standard.

They should also create emojis for bearded people. And albinos. And people with acne. And freckles. And every combination of those. Because these people seem a wee bit underrepresented, and I want as much diversity in my emoticons as I can have, because current emoticons can't get their job done.

Clever solution.

(Granted, making them all unrealistic Simpsons yellow was ALSO a clever, and simpler solution, dating back to the classic Smiley graphic.)

Emoji keyboards should include a randomize function. I'd use that.

No green emoji? Hulk mad!

Personally, I think the "emoticon people" (are there really such people?) should be focussing on ANIMATING the emoticons rather than coloring them in. Wouldn't it be cool if we could REALLY roll the eyes of the smiley face, rather than giving something like this...

It just looks like he's looking up in the air, like he's thinking of something, rather than going through the motion of eye rolling. Also, the blue skin thing really just makes him look kind of chilly. Now, I'll have the same "looking-up" thing, but multiple shades of yellow, peach and tan instead of blue. Wow.

Now, aside from the politically correct B.S. that everyone is CORRECTLY complaining about, my real complaint is that the emoticons DON'T MOVE. It's almost 2015, for God's sake!! That's the year of flying cars, hovering skateboards, and auto-lacing sneakers! Shouldn't they have emoticons that can actually roll their eyes?!? Sheesh!!! (sorry, I couldn't resist)

Dumb move. We don't need to bring race into emoticons. Its the last thing we need...

They already brought race into this.

Why were they all white in the first place?

Hey, Unicode subtly implies that only white people can be unhappy! This one should definitely get a rework!

☺☻

Further proof that this country is turning to ****

Nonsense.

Unicode is an international standard usable by all of human kind. A set of the anthropomorphic icons at present only show white(ish) skin. What's the harm in letting the rest of the world have icons that look just a little bit more like them?

If it's worth making icons that have white flesh, why isn't it worth making icons that have other colours too?

What's the harm?
