They should also create emojis for bearded people. And albinos. And people with acne. And freckles. And every combination of those. Because these people seem a wee bit underrepresented, and I want as much diversity in my emoticons as I can have, because current emoticons can't get their job done.

Skin tone is personal and being able to choose one's skin tone to represent themselves should not be an issue for you. No, skin tone does not equate with freckles, beards, and acne. People discriminate so adeptly on surface features but can't seem to discriminate at all when it comes to understanding any depth of intellect or ethic.

The always offended, hyper politically correct will somehow find a flaw in this once they fabricate one in their perpetually upset heads. :(

I'm mostly amazed at how offended white people get whenever people try to include black people in their activities.

lol @ the original all white-skinned emoji set.

The original emoji set was very white.

That alone caused it to be dragged into the political sphere.

Would your reaction be the same if all the original emojis were of a black skin color?

Remember, this racial bias affects people as they grow up, with toddlers using iPads these days..

I have no idea what you mean by "original". While I do think the yellow emojis are closer in color to lighter skinned people than darker ones, the emojis most people are familiar with. The inclusion of different skin tones now is a good thing, I was merely stating it's an issue because of people opposing it.

I highly doubt a yellow emoji is going to give toddlers a racial bias. They'll be more affected by societal constructs of race, their socio-economic environment, what their parents and friends tell them, and what they see in the media. Not from a yellow emoji.

This is incorrect.

A person's race does play into their thought process.

Their skin color actually leads them to experience life differently.

That's why different races have different views.

I didn't say that the race of a person doesn't play into their thought process at all, but you put far too much weight on it if you think that you can tell that only white people are complaining and that only non-whites are defending this. I know plenty of white people who would defend this. I know plenty of non-white people who would complain about this. Because I know them as individuals and I know the nuances that define them. Do you honestly think that all of your friends of a given race share the same thoughts just because of their race? If so, you are, by definition, racist.

It's actually shocking how white the original emoji set is.

Can you imagine a very dark skinned girl having to use one of them all the time?

So much of what we do on our computer is "stupid", "ridiculous" and a "giant waste of time."

It's interesting that you feel that offering customers a more inclusive experience meets that definition.

I think it's a beautiful thing.

If you feel a bright, often glossy, yellow 'face' is racially offensive or non-inclusive, you've got problems.
And knowing the Internet, this'll be utilized as an avenue for abuse more than it'll help. I can already imagine waves of 'negromoticons' based insults. :/

They don't seem very bright-yellow to me?

I always thought my iMac and iPhone weren't politically correct enough. Hopefully Apple will also include depressed, ambivalent and neutral versions of the Finder icon users can switch between. Just for those who don't identify themselves with the current smiling one.

Nonsense.

Unicode is an international standard usable by all of human kind. A set of the anthropomorphic icons at present only show white(ish) skin. What's the harm in letting the rest of the world have icons that look just a little bit more like them?

If it's worth making icons that have white flesh, why isn't it worth making icons that have other colours too?

What's the harm?

I don't need everything to 'look like me', never have and never will. Do you think I thought less of the founders of this country because they weren't Polish Jews? Do you think I couldn't root for Superman and Batman because they didn't look exactly like me?
Multicultural nonsense
