It's actually shocking how white the original emoji set is.

Can you imagine a very dark skinned girl having to use one of them all the time?

Indeed.

There's actually whole countries with sizeable numbers of devices which use Unicode whose population is almost entirely non-white.

Wouldn't it be nice if they could send, for instance:

#

to each other with their own skin colour?

They don't seem very bright-yellow to me?

Macrumors really did a disservice by using the yellow smiley faces to mockup what this new initiative is for. When in fact, it is to address the ones you just posted which are all pale/white.

I don't need everything to 'look like me', never have and never will. Do you think I thought less of the founders of this country because they weren't Polish Jews? Do you think I couldn't root for Superman and Batman because they didn't look exactly like me?
Multicultural nonsense

"Dark skinned black toddlers should just use white people emoji!"

i agree.. they really should update the front post to show how shockingly white the emoji set really is.

It's amazing.

These people have absolutely NO idea.

"What's the problem? Why would anyone want to show a different skin color? A little black girl should be fine with a white emoticon!"

lol.

I rarely upvote, but this.

A lot of people here don't realize that they are the default. Go to IMDB right now and see.

I don't get MR sometimes. Just so backwards. So one race is the default. Any acknowledgement of any other skin tone is racist? What? I'm sorry, but in this real world there are several different skin tones.

Amazingly, the ones in the middle aren't the subject of racist allegations

I didn't suggest everyone *needs* to have *everything* look like them. Like I say in a later comment, this isn't just about minorities in 'white' countries. What's the harm in providing *international unicode* characters that look like the majorities of other nations?

*edit*

Oh, but I did always like the cartoon Jamie and the Magic Torch when I was growing up -- pretty much the only cartoon with a ginger main character. :)

Seriously? They're bloody emotions.

Yeah, wtf. I've been insulted since the emojis have not had my skin color and eye shape for years - my skin isn't yellow, and my eyes do NOT look like that.

What I want to know is WHERE ARE THE NON RED EYE COLORS???? COME ON, that is SO racist to only have red eyes. And where are the white ones????

[/sarcasm]

This is the **** that happens when the PC crowd get on the committees that manage these things. Mental. I hope they don't get rid of the yellow ones, even the 'white' emojii look weird to me.

Why would you assume it's white people that are complaining? It's not a white emoticon that's being expanded upon. It's YELLOW. As in, straight up yellow, nowhere even close to a tone of skin that you'd see on earth.

You couldn't be more wrong. Although it is not really your fault because Macrumors is the one who is wrongly posting the yellow icons when that is not what this is supposed to address. In reality, this is to address all those other icons which depict real people's skin tones and only come in pale/white versions.

Someone posted the set earlier but you can have a look through your own phone.

I think my problem, and I am being serious now after my super sarcastic last post, is that when I look at an emoticon I see a face. But when some others look at an emoticon they see a white face. Maybe that speaks more about my character than it does theirs, I don't know. Honestly, I kinda leapt into this thread without remembering that there are more than just the yellow-faced emoticons. There's no denying that all of the other people based emoticons have a "white" skin tone, except the one of the guy with the white wrap thing on his head. Oh and the gray-skinned alien. How racist is it that we humans assume all aliens have gray skin? A lot of times I think the PC Police go too far but this probably isn't an example of that.
A serious message to mozumder: be careful how you use the word "racist."

So much of what we do on our computer is "stupid", "ridiculous" and a "giant waste of time."

It's interesting that you feel that offering customers a more inclusive experience meets that definition.

I think it's a beautiful thing.

A more inclusive experience?! I don't feel left out when someone uses that bright yellow emoji... And I don't think anyone but whiners do either.

Did Macrumors purposely try and hide the fact that these emoji are the ones this is supposed to address and not those yellow ones? I'm starting to think so.

Because it's ludicrous.
It's a freaking cartoon icon

Again you lived in a world where white people are dominant and the majority.

I'll have to dig up this great NPR piece about white privilege.

Hey if I had a privilege I would run with it!

now, when can we get a GREEN smiling pile of poo?

The same thing was said about gay rights and gay marriage.

You mean the bright yellow default that looks like no skin tone? The one that represents no one in particular?

What bright yellow? All I see are pale white:

Which one do you think a dark-skinned black toddler should use?

Imagine you live in a country where you could live your whole life never meeting a caucasian person in the flesh. Or even just somewhere that you'll not usually see one. Sure, they're on TV, but that's full of stuff that's different and far away.

Wouldn't it be nice to have expressions that you'll send to your friends and family look just a little bit less like that far-removed media and a bit more like you?

Clearly you haven't. There's quite a difference between a brown emoticon and black-face.

When you learn how to construct a logical argument, please let us know.

The point is that a golliwog is a racial stereotype in its most exaggerated form. Here's one with a brown face, if it will make you happy.
