Epic Games Aiming to Recruit 'Coalition of Apple Critics' to Fight App Store Policies

If I’m remembering my numbers correctly, when Epic added their own payment method it was at $7.99. Apple’s was $9.99.
If Apple was taking 30%, that would’ve been $6.99 Epic earns.
So what I see is Epic is trying to earn another dollar per transaction on someone else’s platform. There’s nothing here that screams “We’re doing it for the customers!” They’re doing it for their profit.

Right now I am using the same phone and build as in your sig. #GMTA

So what happens to skins I bought for an iOS game that can no longer be used because EPIC, without warning, violated their terms of service? Do I get a refund?

This will be the largest 12 year old class action in history!!!

{Or better yet, Apple can refund my money and go after EPIC for damages.}

That's a totally different issue. You need room 10 which is the digital right of ownership, or should I say, lack of ownership. In relation to the past.

Because you are buying into gaming platforms, not general communications devices. You don’t have to factor in how you communicate in general when deciding to purchase their hardware for gaming, just what you want to game on. Apple is using its wider ecosystem to affect purchasing decisions and tie where you choose to play to your mobile phone, despite gaming only being one of a number of reasons to buy a phone. I’d rather not have to limit myself to Apple’s gaming platform just because I chose an iPhone. I don’t use my PS5 or Switch the way I use mobile phones, so I don’t have to weigh choosing their device against how I use my phone for unrelated tasks.
But no one is forcing you to buy an iPhone.

If Epic gets to put an installer on iPhones and malware is distributed through it, can Apple sue Epic into oblivion for damaging the Apple brand and putting users at risk?

Epic should be shilling Galaxy phones: “Buy a Galaxy today and get $50 fortbux* and solar system switchblade”.

*Must agree to install unremovable Fortnag advertisement app which skims your data monthly.

I should t be unable to play a game on the device I own just so I can have a phone with iMessage.
iPhone is more than a "general communications device". I consider the iPhone buying into the Apple Ecosystem.

Epic Games argues that Apple is monopolistic.

Tencent who owns a controlling stake in Epic Games is the world's largest video game company, one of the world's most financially valuable companies, one of the world's largest social media companies, and one of the world's largest venture capital firms and investment corporations.

This makes Tencent monopolistic so the first step is for the Trump administration to implement restrictions against that company.

No, just like Microsoft or Apple cannot sue malware writers on macOS and Windows. The user agreed to download the software and run it. This is why I am an advocate of iOS closed environment. My Grandma used to get a lot of bad things on Android devices.

Yes that is how capitalism works. Or Apple can ignore it and let their iPhone sales decrease.

That's not the only way capitalism works. You can also improve your product to justify your prices. This is why apps spiraal to subscriptions. Just make the best app you can, charge a fair price, and support it for a decade or two.

Yeah that is true. I was mostly saying this in favor of people moving to Android to protest the 30%. Is it just a very very small minority that is just very vocal? Or is it a much bigger problem? If iPhone sales decrease significantly because of their 30% price, they will either changed or let the iPhone die.

iPhone is more than a "general communications device". I consider the iPhone buying into the Apple Ecosystem.

That only makes my argument stronger, being a general communications device alone is enough of a difference. If you’re saying it’s even more than that, it only makes my point too generous to Apple.

When it comes to buying into the ecosystem, I’m glad you like it. Many do, just like I and others don’t. Thanks for letting me know what you like though, I guess.

Nintendo, Playstation, and Xbox all have similar fees for their digital stores and even their physical distribution, with no alternative on the platform. Why is Apple any different?

Apple makes both an iPhone and a Mac. Why are they different?

On the Mac, you are not required to use the Mac App Store. You can install other app stores. Apple doesn’t get a cut of every virtual purchase you make.

I would argue the Mac is not some virus laden nightmare — so the iPhone doesn’t necessarily have to be, either.

I'm with Epic on this one. 30% fees is crazy high especially when some big companies get special treatment (like Amazon)
What would be a better fee? Or how would you define “crazy high”? What negotiation tactic would you employ to convince Apple to at least reconsider their fees?

Apple certainly doesn’t have the monopoly on the smartphone market. Their iPhone isnt even the most technologically advanced unit on the market.

If Epic wanted to show their true power/significance they would shut off their game to iOS users and tell their users they can’t play unless Apple gives in to their demands. Of course the risk is that people will stir from their Fortnite-induced stupor and open another app....

But no one is forcing you to buy an iPhone.

Correct, that's my choice as a consumer! Great point, bud! Luckily I know I have more power as a consumer than just my purchases, I can criticize companies I feel that are being anti-competitive and support other large players fighting the anti-completive company as well, even if they have their own problems with competition. It's like this isn't a zero-sum game, or something. I can press a company to change it's policies, however small my voice is, in hopes that it will get them to change their ways so I don't have to jump ship. Who would have thought?

And that is fine. But you are changing what an iPhone really is saying it should be free and open when it doesn't have to be. It is Apple's products. Just like I cannot try to force AMD to use NVIDIA's CUDA cores. AMD and NVIDIA are doing their own thing. Apple and Google are different that way. You are actually making an argument that proves to be Android is the better platform because it's open. And that is okay. You might prefer that. I don't. I knew up front that the iPhone was locked down. That is the one reason why I got the iPhone. Period. I use all of Apple's services and am in their ecosystem, but I can easily change if iPhone becomes open. Because Android does have some added benefits that iPhones do not have.

So my argument with regards to the iPhone being more than the general communication device and that it is buying into the Apple Ecosystem, that means you are buying a locked down device. It is not a general device, it is Apple specific device, locked down to Apple's store.

And yet this morning my MacBook Air popped up a warning about two apps that “will damage my computer,” that somehow had snuck on their without me knowing (browser hijackers).

And I know what I‘m doing (and I use this MacBook Air about once every 6 months; the rest of the time it just serves up iTunes content).

The beauty of ios is i can trust it with my 11 year old, my mother-in-law, and my wife, and know that I won’t ever have to deal with malware, crapware, subscriptions that we can’t cancel without spending 2 hours on the phone, etc.

I don't think PS or Xbox charge developers 30 percent per sale and then 30 percent per transaction.

Well, you probably don't cherry-pick facts selectively to support a company that cares nothing for you, which here makes you a beacon of pragmatism among Apple absolutists.

You can still ply said Skins on multiple other devices. Or blame Epic for purposely violating a ToS which got their game pulled.

It's not our fault you don't know how to educate your friends and family about using electronics safely. I don't see why my device should be limited by your incompetence in teaching others what you know.

Do you support the Parent's Television Council in their crusade to remove "objectionable" material from cable television, or do you think the V-chip and ratings, on top of other parental controls, is enough for consumers to decide what they watch and what's okay for their children? Should we let a czar decide what we can watch, heaven forbid the children see something Mommy or Daddy don't want them to.

Yep. The very nature of allowing any downloads from any random website is an insecure system. Therefore, iOS is more secure than Windows and macOS. The only reason Windows has way more malware than macOS is because Windows is 90% market share. If you were writing malware, you would write for Windows I bet.

This is such a stupid hill to die on. Do like Kindle and only let people buy in a browser so you don't have to give Apple a cut or do some third degree price discrimination. Charge one price on iOS devices and charge a cheaper price on your website for people who are willing to take the extra step to save a couple of bucks.

My understanding is they are (or were?) doing this - more recently selling things for 20% less when bought things via a venue other the App Store/Google Play. See here:https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/...ega-drop-permanent-discounts-up-to-20-percent.

Seems a bit silly - Epic making Billions because they are in the App Store (despite Apples take). If they don’t like Apple’s rules, that’s all good and well, then they can stay out of the App Store, and make it available on other platforms.

You can be the most careful person in the world, until a trusted website gets served malicious ads.
