I don't think PS or Xbox charge developers 30 percent per sale and then 30 percent per transaction.
Yes they do. Know those cards you buy at Walgreens they take a percentage (15% or more). After the store takes their percentage. Then there is an activation service and they want some cash too.

Wait. You have an update for your game!! Release fee!!!

Then let's let it happen. This is what Capitalism is all about. If I offer a service that charges $1,000 and a competitor comes around and charges $100, I should change my prices when I see my customers leave for my competitors.

Let capitalism work. If enough people leave for Android, Apple will either change, or let the iPhone die out.
Let capitalism work? How naive are you? Capitalism does not work on its own.
It never did.
That’s why we have entire states and parliaments to create rules so capitalism does not implode es quickly as if we “let it work”.

Ah yes, bow down to Tim Cook
iPhone wouldn't be where it is today without its ecosystem of apps, who should learn their place?
It’s a two way street. Apple needs devs and devs need Apple. I think developers have forgotten that part. They’ve taken advantage of the leverage the App Store offers and now that they’ve actualized the results they wanted, they take it for granted and don’t want to pay commission.

In regards to revenue based pricing, I believe Shopify does the same with its Plus customers. They look at how much revenue and traffic your store brings in and adjust your pricing accordingly. More sales = more resources = higher operating costs. It doesn’t come free because you feel entitled to it.

This isn’t going to fare well for Epic. They’ve dug quite a big hole and are burning a bridge faster than they think. They wanted to make a name for themselves, but I don’t think it will be a good one.

This is such a stupid hill to die on. Do like Kindle and only let people buy in a browser so you don't have to give Apple a cut or do some third degree price discrimination. Charge one price on iOS devices and charge a cheaper price on your website for people who are willing to take the extra step to save a couple of bucks.

I agree with you. Amazon and others found a way to make it work. However, I am pretty sure that Apple made it a policy that one cannot charge one price on iOS and a different price outside the App Store. They’ve made sure it’s the same price either way, so the iOS convenience ensures their 30% cut.

Yeah, Epic is acting very immature about this whole thing. There is a right way to question Apple's system and a wrong way. Epic did the very very wrong way. You break the rules, you app gets removed. Its that simple.

Is there though? Everyone is forgetting that occasionally Apple forces a new developer license agreement through people’s throat. Apple decides everything, unilaterally. They make and change the rules as they please. After developers and companies have invested lots of money, Apple can change the rules as they see fit. It’s so bad that people are even afraid to speak up now.

They are a bullying, power abusing company and must be stopped. I can’t wait for the EU to intervene and put consumer interests first.

Also, the damn phone is mine. Why can’t I run what I want on it? Apple is deciding for me, and it’s enough.

I guess I would be more sympathetic to the developers cause if the apps weren't free or dirt cheap. IAP commissions are the only way Apple can offset the costs of developing and maintaining a marketplace of basically free goods.

If app developers were charging fair prices for their goods then one could envision a lower commission on IAPs but until then I don't really see any options.

Wait, what? If developers were charging fair prices? Ok, games with insane monetisation models aside, iOS apps are much cheaper than other software to the point that it’s already quite hard to make a living. Considering that your average app costs no more than $20 (and that’s really pushing it imo)

Nah that's forbidden by Apple. Kindle and other apps are allowed because they're "readers". They can only browse internet based contents, but can't do any interaction with remote server or other clients. Games are, of course, not readers.

If I’m remembering my numbers correctly, when Epic added their own payment method it was at $7.99. Apple’s was $9.99.
If Apple was taking 30%, that would’ve been $6.99 Epic earns.
So what I see is Epic is trying to earn another dollar per transaction on someone else’s platform. There’s nothing here that screams “We’re doing it for the customers!” They’re doing it for their profit.

err? It is the difference in commissions, that is the saving, not the entire commission. Epic take a 12% commission on their store

This seems part of a larger battle being done against Apple. Weird, but I think true.

But, yeah, if Apple's rules are you have to run things through their payment system, and they have a darn good system, and they want a cut, is Epic going to lose their poop over the 'cut' that credit card companies charge? If they were listing and selling on ebay, would they declare jihad on ebay for charging fees for selling on their service? Does their CEO piss holy hell at paying for cap fare, or Uber drivers? DO they rant at the charges for concert tickets, and dry cleaning?

At some point, you have to realize that to live in Apple's ecosystem, you have to pay for the privilege. They knew that going in. Apple curates their app store. Google really doesn't. Stuff gets refused probably on a daily basis. That costs. ALso the payment system, ApplePay, it costs Apple to run that too. Forcing Epic's customers to use Apple Pay isn't a hardship for their customers, it's a feature, right? (Does Apple require Apple Pay, or some other secure payment option?)

Whatever. The next time their CEO is speeding because he doesn't believe in rules, he can explain his theory of how he gets to decide, and no one else does.

Epic is being childish.

Do you even know what Apple's rules are?

IF you are using Apple's payment processing you give Apple 30%. But you cannot have a higher price for it. So you can add additional payment options, but the Apple one has to be just as good of a deal. Apple is simply taking advantage of their monopoly to dictate unfair terms.

I would admire Epic's bravery if it weren't a video game company that profits off the addictive nature of their games amongst children. I don't see how they can win this. And if kids can't play this game for a week or so, they'll switch to something else.

I think any comparison with console gaming platforms would be more apt if Apple, like MS and Sony, would not also turn an almost obscene profit on the hardware (e.g. iPhone, iPad, Mac) itself. Comparing the two ecosystems is comparing apples and oranges and Apple wants to have the cake and eat it, too.

More on the topic: What exactly warrants Apple taking away Epic’s access to developer tools? Don't they also pay for access to these tools separately by paying the price of admission to Apple’s developer program?

I hope Apple lose this badly as I want to see game streaming apps on the store. Apple is pretty much the only one blocking these apps.

Soooo since Apple is the only one blocking these apps that means you have a choice to go with companies NOT blocking these apps, which means Apple isn't a monopoly, which means Apple shouldn't lose badly. Just because you want something doesn't mean someone else should be forced to give it to you.

So what if Apple makes more money on hardware, that just means Apple is doing a better job at selling their product. That should have zero bearing on whether or not Apple should be singled out for the same policies and practices that the console companies engage in and have for years. Of course 3rd parties want lower fees, but then Apple/MS/Sony want them to pay more, thats the marketplace at work. There are plenty of options for game makers to publish their products, Apple shouldn't be forced to play by a different set of rules just because they are more profitable on the hardware side.
