If the 30% is such a big deal, why not build Fortnight for the web and let players log in via their browsers? It doesn't seem like Fortnight uses many, if any, of the native iOS API. I feel like they spent a bunch of money on lawyers, when instead they could've invested it in building out their technology infrastructure... which could have in turn benefitted many Unreal Engine developers.

Because Epic doesn’t care about Fortnite. They want to provide their own App Store for iPhones, and just take their own 29% (or whatever) from other developers.

While Epic plays around, other developers could be releasing games that will shadow Fortnite.
Fortnite is not the only game in town, you know.

Epic has wasted a lot of time and resources with this, and most likely had to pay court costs and lawyer fees, including any depositions, compilation of evidence, etc. It wasn’t worth it.

No, in my experience, it's 'most'.

A nice girl I used to love married a doctor, and you would think she became royalty. Nothing was ;good enough' for her after that. The air 'up there' must have been pretty low on oxygen...

Just because you know a girl who let money go to her head doesn't mean "most" people do that. Yes, "many" do, especially if they came by it in an easy way (e.g. by marriage, inheritance, etc.) but I still say most wealthy people aren't ******s because of their money.

Fair enough, but wouldn't a web player enable them to do that? And without a major fight with Apple?

Well, 'many', and 'most' are pretty much the same nebulous thing. Right? Both mean some number above 50%, and below 100%. Are we arguing percentages?

And, Jeff Bezo's ex is giving all 'her' money away. There ARE good and giving rich people, but there are also plenty of douches that wouldn't give someone a penny for their loafers. I've known people who will only donate money of they can get a receipt and get it off on their taxes. They would rather throw things away than think their used junk would 'benefit' someone. Yeah, there are really good people who share their wealth, but there are also MANY people who cheat on their taxes like it's a job, and screw everyone and everything they can to get ahead. They also know that rich people are audited less than others. Yeah, the air is different up there... But it could be the beer talking.

Wow this guy is such a douche. Why not just put the game back up and pay the damn fee that you're obligated to pay, while opening up the game to the largest mobile gaming market available, and making potentially tens of millions more in profit each year? Cutting one's nose off to spite one's face just seems incredibly fickle at this point in time. Epic could be profiting in a big way by having their game on Apple's platform, but instead, they are hurting hundreds of millions of young gamers who can't play their game because they are having a hissy fit at having to follow rules and pay for the right to use a fantastic gaming platform. Sorry Epic but this is all just childish.

On the topic of profit for Apple. I don't know about anyone else, but all I know is that Apple makes amazing products and services, and if making big profits means Apple can spend more on R&D and produce even more amazing products, then I'm all for it. By buying Apple products, I'm investing in my future. Apple Cars? Awesome! Apple Silicon that's resulted in laptops that have 20 hours battery and faster single-core performance than practically every other personal computer on the market? Awesome! Does Apple (and it's staff) make a lot of money? Sure. But I'm not sure I want that to change any time soon when they keep on providing us with incredible devices, services and software.

Not sure anyone would want to sell games through Epic’s store that only develops web apps/streaming
For example: there's a YouTube app, but I can also go to YouTube.com and view the same content. There's a Facebook app, but I can also got to Facebook.com and view the same content. No need to go through the App Store... in fact, some people prefer to use the websites. I understand there are many benefits to using the App Store and the native SDK, but there are also detriments (I guess, mainly the 30%). Epic has the choice to not publish via the App Store at all.

Sure. They don’t want to, because they see those tasty App Store profits and want to be the ones raking them in.

Just ban Unreal Engine 5 on Apple products and their entire platforms become useless even more useless for gaming.

My guess is that they want to capitalize on their Epic Game Store brand and move it to iOS. Then they would sell their own apps on the app store and develop in engine tools to directly compete against Apple that would trade publishing on the iOS EGS for lower commission fees when publishing elsewhere. Once they have a large enough third party support they would start to dictate game development standards on iOS (and by extension android).

It's not just about money and power. Sometimes it's about the power get more money.

Wow, this forum actually censors the abbreviation "a" + "holes"? I did not type the full word out. Geez.

Anyway, I don't think over 50% of people become [that naughty word] because of money. Greed is a vice that can be shared by rich and poor. And I also think people usually mean a much higher percentage than 51% when they use the word "most" in an everyday, casual sense. They probably are thinking 75% or more.

Oh, and people can even give away money for selfish reasons (e.g. so that people will think well of them and praise them).

Seems like a missed opportunity - litigate vs. innovate. And now, if they ever want to get back onto iOS, the browser might be their best path forward. Yet they're in an enormous hole, which the dug themselves.

One could argue that altruism doesn't exist. Except that it must because we created a word for it. Of course, we also don't need a word for healthy except to describe those that aren't ill.

I think they might have gotten some bad advice about how easy it would be to win the lawsuit. Either that, or they are merely puppets for Tencent.

True, sort of...

A guy I knew, years ago, saw an advert in a local car seller weekly, and was offering a late model BMW 'cheap'. He though, well, WTH, let's see what it's all about. It was a woman who gave her address, and said 'stop buy as soon as you can'. So, he skipped class and took a drive over, and met her, and saw the car. 'Nice car' he said, 'but more than I can afford'. She asked what he could afford, and he gave her a number, and she said 'SOLD!'. She said she was about to be divorced, and was trying to 'dump' all of his stuff before she was served. Legal, possibly, but kind of crazy. She wanted to get back at him...

I guess she was giving away money for selfish reasons? She also offered some of his tailored suits, but they wouldn't fit him.

Isn’t that the plot of the first season of Ted Lasso?

Just returning the normal App Store fee they would have paid anyway. No loss
I still don’t understand all the “BIG L FOR APPLE”, “EPIC WINS BIG”, etc etc news and bait titles when everything points out, even by epic themselves, that it isn’t a win… what the heck. Me being an Apple gadgets person I’m now being temporarily bothered by acquaintances asking about that big loss for Apple and how I feel about it.
(Hint, I feel nothing, just don’t mess with the platform by waving random decisions without knowing their long term impacts).

Probably not. But every week or so the Epic Games store offers a couple free games, many of them not compatible with macOS, which I download just so they have to pay the developer money.
It is my understanding that the Epic store revenue model and numbers aren’t profitable. Apparently they forecast it to the profitable after 2023 if I remember right… those free games totally could be part of the reason 😛

Hey Epic, why have you intentionally punished MacOS fortnite players by making the new season and updates unavailable despite being easily able to implement your own payment method through the MacOS app which is available on your own external store?

We can forgive the absence of the iOS version given all that is happening with the dispute, but there has never been anything stopping you to continue to support willing and paying customers from playing up-to-date Fortnite on their Mac.

To add insult to injury, MacOS Fortnite players are still welcomed with a #FreeFortnite spiel upon opening the game, pleading for sympathy despite none of what is happening with the Apple dispute having to affect the MacOS version of the game in any way.

EPIC is voluntarily punishing MacOS players unnecessarily just to spite Apple, with complete disregard for player loyalty and fans of the game.
This is the real damage, complete garbage this… Unreal Engine itself as a rendering technology is amazing, what UE5 is doing with the recently introduced Task/Mesh shaders is mind blowing.

Even if don’t use UE myself beyond tinkering or play Fortnite to see what’s up, I truly hate a totally compatible platform being segregated so fictitiously.

That's literally what Epic did though...

hm...
Let's make the mathematics easier and say the prices are $8 and $10, with $10 being the regular price and the $8 being the "discounted" price.
Isn't Epic taking an extra 10% with the "discounted" price then?? 🤔

Ban Epic . If Tim Greedy wants the extra 30% build it for the web and let people access it through their browser
Apple customers are getting tired of Epic and its pre planned lawsuit and disruption
