They will just make more money if the move the devs into implementing silly skins and emotes into Fortnite. Must suck for the devs.

Uhhh it's Freemium, lots of in-app purchases and from what I've read you need to spend real coin to advance in this game.

I was more arguing that it is a free to play game, no 60$ up front cost. I don’t know where you got the idea that there was any upfront cost.

I also don’t know why you would need cosmetic things to advance in the game. That’s what you can buy from the store.

Well ok then, but all I saw is in game coin purchases in the app store description so I made a wrong assumption. I guess I will give it a whirl to see.

The stability and security issues aren't what they used to be. It isn't like macOS is without its own slew of problems these days.

It's still dismal to buy software for an operating system you have little control over what you can install and what version you run. Apple loves it because you have little choice but to keep throwing money at it.
That's one of the reasons I like FreeBSD, even over Linux distributions. It gives me complete control over my environment, and lets me fairly effortlessly combine pre-compiled packages, with custom-compiled software, on one system. You can kinda do that on Linux distributions, but you're not going to get any assistance from the system for the actual compilation, which is often not without pitfalls.

/end FreeBSD evangelism.

No operating system is without issues. I suppose, like most things, it's about what you prioritize.

$5.99 eh? Wow that must have hurt you bad... Poor you.

How much did we pay for games in the PC era? On the consoles? Graph it. Did the price go up with inflation over time? No. It tanked with the smart phone app market.

What's your problem? Were you fired from Epic Games?

$6 for a mobile game with very little story and simple mechanics (like Infinity Blade) is a fair price. Same as $60 is a fair price for a game like Red Dead Redemption that probably used WAY more than 10 times the resources to make.

Agree but the two other games in the series got a bit more complex and there was not only a bit more story but two "canon" books commisioned by Chair to fill the gaps between the 3 games. Still a good value for a mobile game.

RIP Infinity Blade and the many hours I played. When III came out I was in the top 1% at a ranking of 11,000 or so without any cheating. It was a fun game but it did get repetitive over time. I played some of the expansion packs but it didn’t reveal much additional storyline. At one time Apple had a free book of Infinity Blade written in that universe. I downloaded it but never got around to reading it. Now it doesn’t show up anymore in my iBooks. I would have read it as an homage.

Oh well, here’s to a lot of fun back in the day!

As a retro-gamer, App stores suck. I like playing old DOS games, my old console games. Hell even dusted of Myth 2 and escape velocity the other day. But if you like old mobile games you are stuffed.

This is one reason why gaming on the iOS really sucks.

This idea of removing access to a product which is purchased by the consumer also changes the concept of ownership. Purchasing digital products is more akin to leasing while purchasing physical products is more akin to actual ownership. The former can be revoked without consumer consent but the latter remains with the consumer as long as it exists. This is partly why I won’t purchase digital only products—i should be able to use them as long as I have means without fear of immanent revocation of a license or retraction of a product which I have legally purchased.

This is an example of why I look at 100% digital distribution of media with a lot of unease.

There is an enormous community of gamers who love playing classics on old hardware, but are we really going to be able to play these all-digital games even 10 years from now? Emulation is great, but 1) It is not always practical, and 2) It is often impossible to replicate the same user experience of playing on native hardware, thus defeating the purpose.

There have already been examples of content owners not just removing their media from distribution, but forcibly deleting that media from customers' devices. Even without that heavy-handedness, it's unlikely that these publishing platforms have any kind of longevity and they might just die of neglect over the years. Old content is sometimes impractical to re-license for a new platform and it will just disappear.

I buy a lot of digital media, but these days I'm buying certain paper books and rare movies on disc; at least that way the people who sold them to me can't force their way into my home and set them on fire.

Well said, so true.

It seems Epic is having a big purge of much of their IP. Just a few days ago they officially discontinued Unreal Tournament.

It all seems very sad for all these old successful IPs which made the company what it is today all be killed off overnight =(
Oh, how I loved Unreal Tournament. Bring it back, please.

This is a huge bummer and goes to show that you don’t own any digital media if you have to download it from a server onto a device that damn near forces you to update it.

I ****ing HATE what has become of the gaming industry. We had a place for the AAA games with single player on all platforms (see GTA, etc.) wi compelling story modes and everything. You paid $60 and that was it.

Now you get a “free” game and pay through the nose to give your character a T-shirt. And people fall for this ****. GTA V has the best story mode ever and what people want to play is the same ****ing heists over and over again with cars that can cost more than the entire game. Same thing with this Fortnite crap.

We had a very good period in iOS gaming when they began putting out many console releases (GTA 3, VC, SA and LCS, the PS2 Prince of Persia, hell even Bioshock was ported) when someone discovered that there were too many idiots in the world willing to pay $5 for a single weapon. Sigh.

Right behind you on this. Watched a Twitch stream of PUBG PS4 when it dropped to see if it was worth the purchase (surprisingly it was) however throughout, the Twitch chat was overloaded with people begging the streamer to load the store page to show prices of golden coloured guns etc.

WTF does it matter what colour your weapon is when playing a game? Is it purely a "look at me I'm better than you because I have x skin" mentality these people have? It's totally foreign to me, I just don't understand it, and yet they spend in droves on meaningless crap and the industry responds by producing more F2P content!

Good games on mobile devices are a joke.

Yeah the iPad and iPhone are capable devices, but developers don’t want to waste time and money with updates.

Even Rockstar won’t update the GTA ports..

A waste of time.

It’s not really Apple. Why would a developer waste time and money on games that no one wants to play on like iPad etc..

Cool games, but I kind of got tired of them quickly because they were all graphics but almost no gameplay. Kind of illustrates the simplicity of the ipad versus something like console or PC games. I wonder if this is the market catching up to Apple and their 30% cut. Kind of like Steam where PC game makers are making their own stores as well. Plus Apple has that big lawsuit on their walled garden app store. Will be interesting to see where this all lands in a few years.

Yep that's another reason I don't game on iOS, there are really no blockbusters for it. If Apple was smart they would make a very good controller/cradle (example: a rectangular drop in like the Switch with extra battery) and really push for development of real games, not the candy crush stuff that's on iOS for the most part. Of course their 30% cut is what gets in the way, maybe they need to invest in purchasing a game company or 2. I get they make a lot of money off that stuff, but blockbuster games are making a lot of money as well for someone else. It strikes me as odd that they put so much marketing and devote such a large part of their announcements on the graphics performance of their new products, but really have very few showcases for it. Even the Bethesda game got pushed back to next year and from what I've read the gameplay is very rudimentary, sort of like Ininity Blade but with free movement.

Last really really good game I played on iOS was the Aralon RPG's, they really need more of these types of games but with big names behind them.

One iOS game I purchased several years ago (which I fortunately still have on an old iPad) ended up exchanging ownership, so the game is still around and was updated for 64-bit devices, but it unfortunately requires a new purchase if you want the game still. Just another reason that being able to have a physical copy can be nice (granted, not a possibility on iOS), so I can still play games I purchased several decades ago if I like.

[doublepost=1544546048][/doublepost]Well, to show how much I don't pay attention to Fortnite, I didn't realize that the same developer who did the Infinity games also made Fortnite. Huh.

Fortnite has ruined Epic. They've literally poured all of their resources in to that heap of **** game... and for what? to crank out a bunch of idiotic skins with no meaningful content. Meanwhile, UT is left to rot on the vine for over a year with no further development in sight... it's been in pre-alpha for going on 5 years. They've put all of their eggs in one basket and once the 10-14 year olds that play Fortnite grow up they will be losing their revenue.

I don't mind them doing this, but it's a scumbag move to do it without proper notice. If there was a game I really liked, I would install it on an older device that doesn't get updated.

Apple has never been serious about gaming. Look at how abysmal their Mac lineup is. Underclocked, poor thermals. No serious company developes games for Macs

Or uses Macs for any serious work. I'd be great if the hardware was there, but its just over priced toys for teenagers these days.

Graphics were good, I found the gameplay boring. In ten years, I’ve yet to find a game I enjoy that isn’t only ok for short bursts (Tiny Wings, endless runners) or puzzle games.

When a decent port is released, like the GTA games, it’s hampered by touch controls. Why Apple refuses to release a simple first-party controller, I don’t know.

The freemium model being as pervasive as it is also sucks.

It's not all bad, though. In many Steam games you get items freely every so often and can sell them for actual currency (granted, it's stuck in Steam). I've bought entire games just from selling items that other people are willing to pay for. :p
