Not at all, the DMA has its foundation on existing cases and laws already on the books, apple is under investigation, they haven’t been cleared. Google, Microsoft, Amazon etc have been under investigation and lost billions as they have been found guilty after taking years.

These cases are the foundational backbone. But with a clear case to look at and codifying these effect and results without the need to reinvent the wheel every time.
By doing this the EU wants to reach into the market and control it to their whim and desires. It's not about consumers. It's about having the power to simply flex their way into.

If it’s not for consumers and the markets benefit, then it’s awfully convenient it has much of by accident

I’m fully aware. That is why I’m talking about American companies over all. They are extremely prudish. That includes apple, google, visa, Amazon, epic etc etc with only few exceptions
Still it is apples brand image and brand value that will take a dive if the apple eco system nosedives downhill due to scamware, malware, porn, illicit material etc.

This whole ordeal started when Epic, Spotify and other EU based companies complained. Why? Money. They want a bigger piece of the pie. However, EU companies instead of truly innovating to success would rather use the EU to force their success.

Let's not forget that Spotify is the largest music streaming service in the world. They have twice as many paid subscribers as Apple Music. Apple will never catch up. Period.

Spotify also has a free tier with hundreds of millions more users... a thing that Apple is simply not interested in at all.

And Epic has one of the most popular games in the world. They make millions of dollars per day from Fortnite alone.

So yeah... even if Apple has certain policies that make some companies upset... I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for Epic and Spotify...

?

While Spotify is larger, it doesn't mean or imply that they wouldn't want to assert total control. It'd be delusional. On Epic's front I highly digress or they wouldn't want to put their store into the iPhone, it's a simple money and data grab.

So Spotify is the largest music streaming service in the world... and they want total control?

Greedy!

?
Apple is the largest information technology company by revenue (totaling US$365.8 billion in 2021) and as of May 2022, it is the world's second-most valuable company so why should it seek total control?

That’s what makes Spotify’s complaints so hypocritical. You can’t on one hand go boasting in your quarterly earning reports about how you are growing in users and dominating podcast ad revenue, while going to EU regulators, tin can in hand, and complain about how Apple, a company with minority market share, is hobbling your business model.

At the end of the day, it’s about control, not about empowering developers or benefiting the end user.

I wish more people would call these developers out on their BS, but I guess one can’t be seen to be sucking Apple’s teat.

The time has come to fire Tim Sweeney. He took a high stakes gamble and lost. Someone else will need to clean up.

I thought the earlier "total control" comment was talking about Spotify?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes. It cannot be that Apple seeking total control is fine but Spotify doing the same is not ok? Everybody wants control and you cannot condone one company while criticizing the other for the same.

First of all... I'd like to apologize for derailing the conversation. If I hadn't replied to the "total control" guy it wouldn't have spawned all these additional comments.

Let me just admit that I don't even know what they meant by "total control"

Spotify is big for sure... but they're not the only music streaming service.

And as someone said in another thread... Apple only has 20% of the smartphone market.

Neither of those sound like "total control" to me.

Besides... there's a big gap between "wanting total control" and "achieving total control"

Again... whatever that means...

:p

If you payed attention, you would notice Spotify only complained when apple music started for being anti competitive the fact apple tried to undermine their business by taking 30% from Spotify and keeping 100% of the Apple Music revenue.

Indeed it’s all about control. If only people saw apple is the one who demands all the control while other tried to return it to the users.

I agree with you 100% that it's all about control, and for me, I am fine with Apple retaining control, because I trust that Apple will do more with that control for me as the end user, than these third party developers ever would were the balance of power to ever shift over to their end.

I feel that Spotify complaining is a red herring. They were never profitable before Apple entered the music streaming space, because their business model was never sustainable to begin with, so what difference does it make whether Apple (or any other competitor for that matter) enters the market or not?

Not to mention that Spotify is available on both iOS and android, while Apple Music is primarily targeting iPhone users. So Spotify has a way larger market share than Apple Music, and you expect me to believe that despite having moved the majority of their iOS users off iTunes, and despite iOS making up a vastly smaller market share, Spotify is still in danger despite commanding the majority of the android user base still?

Likewise, is the lack of a Spotify app on my Apple TV a result of their lack of control over the platform, or just sheer laziness? These companies complain left and right about how they are being shafted by Apple, yet I don't see them putting their money where their mouth is by working to improve the user experience in the areas that they do have control over. This makes me a lot less sympathetic to their plight, and it comes across as more of a sore loser whining to me.

Can you prove that there isn’t a commission from Apple Music IAP that isn’t getting moved to some ledger account somewhere?

For me it’s more the option that I would like to choose when I gave apple all the control, and when I want some of that back

When apple first announced Apple Music they could offer the same price that Spotify could never match, and that they wasn’t allowed to link to their homepage caused them to remove IAP as it wasn’t possible to match the price in store to their website, something apple did trie to stop with the requirement of price in the store must be same price or cheaper(until developers was outraged) then the act of demanding IAP must be available untill they backed down on this requirement.

We can’t really say how much economic damage apple have done to Spotify as they removed the IAP and only have legacy subscribers left.

(Any company) demands control over the products that (any company) makes.

For me it’s more the option that I would like to choose when I gave apple all the control, and when I want some of that back
That option exists. In order to ensure (a company) does not have control, do not use (a company’s) products.

A commission to whom? Themselves? There is nobody but themselves in this transaction.

Unless they’re doing a double Irish version of the transaction, and are still just a transaction to themselves
