Depends whether they keep the existing binary compatible with new content. I’d imagine they calculated they’d be able to operate for long enough with the existing binary to get this settled. They don't need to. You won't be able to play with an old Fortnite client after the 27th, due to an updated version from Epic. 💁🏼♂️
So using your example, you think it’s cool to charge one person 150/night but another person 300/night for the same room because reasons? How about a grocery store that charges one customer 1.50 for a bag of chips but makes another customer pay 3.00 for that same bag?
You’re completely onboard with that and feel this is the behavior of a good and ethical business? Oh I’d love to hear your argument for this.
Did I say it was wrong? And what is wrong about them asking for a side letter?
They won't. That's exactly why Epic are having their big event next week.Depends whether they keep the existing binary compatible with new content. I’d imagine they calculated they’d be able to operate for long enough with the existing binary to get this settled.
And what is wrong about them asking for a side letter?
Or possibly you could just tell us about ”all the companies” rather than trolling the “fanboys” BS. Other than 15% on continuing subscriptions, which is a different category, and Amazon’s special deal, please tell us about these other companies we don’t know about.I’m sorry but I think the Apple fanboys should do some research and look at all the companies that Apple allow to pay 15% instead of the 30% fee.
I see that as just more PR and goading Apple. They’ve already had their anti Apple propaganda plastered all over the game. They won't. That's exactly why Epic are having their big even next week.
I don't see why this is is an issue. The App store belongs to Apple. They can do with their property as they see fit. And if there are no longer property rights, what's to stop people from posting their games on Epic's store without paying Epic a cut?A court hearing is scheduled for Monday to determine whether Apple can remove Fortnite from the App Store for violating the App Store rules.
Apple will not back down. To them, this is on a similar scale to "creating a back door" for government agencies to gather data from iPhones to investigate criminal behavior. It's a matter of principal to Apple. I am not predicting Apple will win or lose, but I will "predict" there will be appeal after appeal if they do lose. So, Who Will Blink / Fold First ?
Epic definitely has the weaker hand, but it will be very interesting to see how this plays out !
This is a really good point and one of the reasons I hope Apple locks down the Mac next. Wouldn’t it be great if we could only get apps from the Mac App Store? Think of how much more secure and streamlined that would be! Oh I get chills just wishing for it.
Not following you. If Apple and Epic and come to a side agreement, none of this drama would have happened, and no other developers would have known. No floodgates opened. It would have been obvious that an agreement had been made if the in-app payment system was changed vs other apps.
No doubt it would be leaked which in turn would lead to subpoenas and warrants at the next hearing on the subject.
Floodgates would certainly have been opened no matter what.
Most kids with iPhones probably also own a console from either Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft. Even more ironic is where in a pandemic where a lot of people are home anyway not needing to play mobile unless it’s a preference. However, not all those users have the $ to swap devices just for a game as they are kids. Specially when they can switch over to other similar games like Freefire, Legends, or PUBG.
They’ll probably end up with no in-app purchases (or in app marketplace) and have a web only system for mobile players - which to be fair I’ve never understood why they don’t offer anyway.
Or possibly you could just tell us about ”all the companies” rather than trolling the “fanboys” BS. Other than 15% on continuing subscriptions, which is a different category, and Amazon’s special deal, please tell us about these other companies we don’t know about.
Is your issue is the 30% fee and closed system? Why don’t you do some research on the other platforms using the same formula. Guess what? Epic does business with Microsoft and Sony, just to get you started. The level of ignorance regarding this subject that members are so proud to display is truly disheartening. If you want a better understanding of the legal ramifications check out this video. There is a very interesting battle going on here and it is even more interesting with just a little more information and a little less “in my opinion”.
I have no issue with developers wanting to pay less money, that would be great for developers. But enough of the “paying for nothing” and “monopoly“ statements because they just make members sound uninformed.
You shouldn't take Apple's and this article's claims at face value. It's not as simple as this article makes it seem. From Tim's email:Anyone who thought Epic cared about "all developers" was deluded. And this proves it.
More emails hereEpic is requesting that Apple agree in principle to permit Epic to roll out these options for the benefit of all iOS customers. We hope that Apple will also make these options equally available to all iOS developers in order to make software sales and distribution on the iOS platform as open and competitive as it is on personal computers.
If we do not receive your confirmation, we will understand that Apple is not willing to make the changes necessary to allow us to provide Android customers with the option of choosing their app store and payment processing system.
I love my Mac but outside of productivity or utilities there aren’t many valuable apps available.I disagree. I like the mac experience infinitely better, which allows me to get software in the way I like. I can choose to use Steam for gaming apps, I can download software directly. I can download software on the Mac that is not possible to get on the iPhone. So much for "friction free"
I don't know what you mean with flash, since it is essentially deprecated on desktops as well.
Read the update. It would make no sense to send an email that would become available for everyone to see to try to get a secret deal days before suing Applelooks like they weren't fighting for all developers. they were fighting for themselves. and when they couldn't do that, they resorted to pulling this BS
Then why is epic also suing google?Because on android you can side load apps. Developers can have their apps on third party app stores. On Apple you have to have an app in the App Store.
Read the update. Seems Apple is not being so honestEpic is looking worse as the days go on and more info is shared. Not going to end well for them I’m afraid
