Not true. It's not remotely that simple. Different kind of animal altogether.

Are you saying that game developers like Epic pay less than 30% commission to Sony, Xbox, Nintendo and Steam … who pretty much account for most of the sales for video games?

30% is the market standard in the gaming industry, so Epic has got nothing to complain about.

Still if you don’t like the product don’t buy it. Period.
Thanks for the sensible advice, but, what does that have to do with what I wrote?

However, while we’re at it, I like it so I bought it. I’m not gonna say I like it better now that I can install third party app stores, because, frankly, I don’t give a crap nor intend to use them, but I am happy for the people who want to and now can do just that.

On Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo you also have the use the “App Store“ and pay the same 30% commission fee also. There is no difference here at all.

Epic is just being ”selectively” outraged against Apple while being fine with Sony, Xbox and Nintendo for exactly the same thing.

This is nothing more but a witchhunt, because else Epic would have went after Xbox, Playstation and Sony too. But they didn;t.

Btw, Nintendo sells their hardware at a profit, just like Apple.

It's very different and it's not remotely the same. Even the commission is not the same and its for all the different reasons. Issue is just too complex unless we have actual publishers and game developers in this discussion.

but the claim was Apple was stealing wireless charging...

and basically implying Apple was doing wrong.

now you are changing tune...

perhaps Apple should have better defended their patents Jobs claimed when he introduced the iPhone.
The instance was that Apple took nothing from webOS. They took everything from webOS. There is nothing wrong with them stealing ideas; it was fresh competition that made them do it. We all benefited from webOS and Windows Phone 7 shaking up Apple and Google.

Now there is nobody left to steal ideas from and so all we have are tinted icons.

And Best Buy wasn’t even developing or maintaining the platform that those (software or audio) CDs run on.

If everything is so great and trusted with Apple, there’d be no need to fight alternative stores as much as they do - since consumers are going to use them anyway.

You’re forgetting that Apple has begun competing with them on many types of content:

- gaming subscriptions
- video streaming
- music streaming
- fitness
- online storage/sync

Having to fork out 30% to one of your biggest competitors or being unable to market to them at their preferred point of interac is in no way fair competition.

But you takes risks in keeping these items in stock - Apple‘s commission-based models takes virtually zero economic risk.
Zero Risk is because it is a digital file that is copied when sold to someone. It’s efficient. Better than physical distribution

Every post is just hate on Apple.
Admit the deal Apple gives app devs is MUCH better than the old physical store model.

The hardware is yours. Feel free to smash your iPhone with a hammer for all I care.

As for the underlying software, you are free to crack it and install Cydia on it. But Apple is not obligated to let you keep running it, in part because the process of enabling it typically involves exploring security holes in the OS, which is well within the right of Apple to patch as they present themselves.

Third, I don’t believe 3 in every 10 people are jailbreaking their phones. There’s probably something wrong with the data presented. If you told me 3%, j might still believe you, but it’s probably less than 1.

Your argument, and your desires, change nothing.
Who jailbreaks in 2024?
It was novel a decade ago for those wanting to prove they could and got a kick out of it. Like most fads it became harder as Apple closed holes.

Or perhaps phones have matured like a lot of industries and there’s very little new because they do most things people want very well.

Remember when every release of Office needed new splashy features because the biggest competitor was the previous version people bought.

Hence MS got into subscriptions for a regular income stream. They give you a year of upgrades knowing you need to keep paying. Works for them.

We are at a point where almost no one needs a new phone unless they break theirs.

I mean, if you want to discount the herculean effort involved in bringing Apple Intelligence to all Apple devices...

This is what I expected will monopolise the bulk of Apple's time and resources for the next couple of years to come.

The issue you still run in to is I haven’t argued it’s my hardware, I have firmly argued it’s my device to do with as I wish when I purchase it. iOS is included in this purchase.

Otherwise why would U.S. courts throw out apples case that its illegal and tos violation of the licensed software.

You claim this while 9 million iPhones had Cydia installed in juni 2010… that was up to 30% of iPhone users used cydia. And 5+ million weekly users View attachment 2407115
Still waiting for the removal of your false claim...

The developer also pays 100% of development costs whereas Apple pays 0%. There are very few apps in the App Store that bring enough money so that 70% was enough to sustain even a single developer. It's the developer who invests the time and money and bears all the risk. Apple does not do any of it.
When you start a business you bear the risk. This is some how new news?

the devs used to pay 100% back in the old days too.

and then pay commissions to all the middlemen to put their software on shelves.
often getting back less than 10% of the shelf price.

Apple getting 15-30% is a bargain.
As shown by the millions of apps in the store, making money from sales, in app purchases, subscriptions or ads.
How many billion has Apple paid to devs? Lots!

You are right there are differences, developers have to pay game consoles the commission even if they sell physical software in a store. There's a reason you almost never hear developers talk in these discussions because they know they have it pretty good on cell phones. Most of them don't want to see massive change. They don't want to take on more risk.

I'm saying commission is not 30% and not all of it go to Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. iOS app store has nothing in common with publishing games for PlayStation and Xbox.

The video game press disagrees with you.

I have a digital PS5 - PlayStation gets a 30% cut of every game I buy. Why is Epic ok with that on PlayStation?!? Why are they not complaining to the EU about big bad Sony?

I guess I didn't realize people still played Fortnite. But hey, if you like the game, play on. I'm no hater.

I’m not a gamer but according to Piers Harding-Rolls, in July 2024 thirty-five million people played Fortnight for more than 600 million hours on Xbox and PlayStation making it far and away the biggest free-to-play game on those consoles.

The fact that phone OSes still don’t obey basic laws of ergonomics says they have a long way to go. Phones go bigger but the operating systems just got stretched. If Jobs were still around they would be no interactions outside of the reach of your thumbs. He would have fired whoever patched in ‘reachability’
