Nah, not really. People are lazy. I'm not going to waste time going to a separate payment portal, even if the app is a couple bucks cheaper.
This.
A lot of IAPs are impulse purchases. People want to just tap once and instant gratification. If they are forwarded to a website outside of the app, people are too lazy for that. Most will stick to Apple's IAPs.

You must not be able to read the outcome...this is not what Epic wanted. They can't add their ENITRE STORE to the iOS. THAT'S WHAT THEY WANTED.
You're not getting it. Epic got EXACTLY what it wanted. It will now be able to completely bypass Apple's pay mechanism for everything. They have to pay the 30% while they were required to, now, they don't have to pay anything. They just link to their store.

Barring appeals, this going to cripple Apple's revenue from their app store.

Download a game for free. Here's a link to purchase the unlock code. 100% profits for developer. 0% profit for Apple.

Huge L for Apple. If this stands after appeal, you can take tens of billions of future revenue off the table.

I don’t know - maybe if the app gives a big discount, I would consider paying for a subscription outside Apple.

But have you ever signed up for a free month trial and then forgot to cancel it?

At least when everything goes through Apple you can review all of your subscriptions and cancel them easily.

I have many bad memories with things like cell phone services etc. in which I keep getting billed for things that I thought I canceled. Some service subscriptions I made deliberately difficult to cancel.

If given the choice I’ll stick with paying through the Apple App Store.

Good.

Despite what people are arguing, just because you created a business that dominates a market doesn't mean you can do whatever you want.

There's good reason we created laws a hundred years ago to stop anti-competitive behavior.

I always get a chuckle from the lack of reading comprehension by financial media. Many headlines are all contradictory or incorrect.

Apple won on 9 out of 10 counts and was ruled to not be a monopoly in this sub-category. Epic is forced to pay 30% commission/damages for around 12 months of specific revenue.

Apple is forced to do something in 90 days that they were already going to do for other "reader" categories. Apple will still likely appeal to push this off past 90 days.

This is what everyone watching the case assumed would be the ruling, is not surprising in any way, and doesn't appear to be materially impactful to Apple (depending on execution and other consumer habits we can't predict in advance.) It's pretty fair.

Why is anyone outraged or surprised or thinking this was a major win for Epic? Please enlighten me. Apple even just released a statement where they don't disagree with the ruling, lol.

I think this is ok, as long as they have to keep in-app-purchases, and the price and value is the same. i.e. $x gets you y-vbucks, or whatever. Not “buy at our store and get 100 more somethings.“

It won't really. It's only a boon for the big players (Epic, Amazon etc…). Setting up a payment system and bypassing impulse purchases via IAP isn't going to be profitable for 95% of developers.

Very few people are going to be setting up their credit card on your dodgy website to purchase $5 of lives in a game to get past a level they're frustrated they almost beat.

Yes it is a win for Epic. They sued for more knowing full well they would not win all. Ultimately the most important for them right now is in game revenue which they don't have to share with Apple on iOS anymore. Several countries will follow as the dominos start to fall.

Bingo.

Even if they offer a discount, how many people will go that long ass route to say $1 or $2? The App Store is generally really cheap as-is

Just curious, as I don't buy anything from the app store. Is it a pretty seamless transaction ( quick and easy )when you purchase one of these games or whatever when using apples way for paying for these things?

Seems like by having developers adding a link to an external payment method, it would be more of a pain in the ass and that the majority of apple users would just stick with the apple in app payment system, no?
It will be. I get a lot of app in the app store and it's simple and painless. This would mean that I need to set up payment accounts with CC info for every one?! that's f'd! I've already had CC cards hacked, not going to much it more than I would need to.

They have to share revenue for anything bought via IAP.

The Judge ruled Apple has to allow LINKS to EXTERNAL WEBSITES, but how many people will do that? Epic wanted the option right in front of the consumer face, not. link.

Also no Epic App Store, which is what they actually REALLY wanted.

Epic lost so bad here after the literal circus they put on. Sweeny is lucky to be 51% owner of Epic.

We have now found out that it is no longer to make a product and run a store they way you see fit. What's next? going after Walmart for refusing to sell your product or for not giving it an end cap. The only people who will lose are the consumers.

So many seem willing to pay apple instead of a dev directly. If you have a problem with dev you still deal with apple. Dealing with apple sucks because at the end of the day they can end your Apple ID if you protest too much.

I love apple hardware as much as the next guy and they can take my money. But when it comes to 3rd party apps and services apple needs to get out of my way so I can pay and deal with them directly.

Clearly none of you are game or app developers. If you worked really hard on your app or game just to have Apple/Steam/Google take 30% of all profits on your app/game. I'd be pissed too. Epic pleaded with them to take a more reasonable cut, and they all said no. But, then of course there are sweetheart deals with Netflix and Spotify to allow people to purchase their subscription outside of Apple ecosystem. Just shady and a big ol middle finger to your average dev company.

I love Apple as much as the next person, but when they stop robbing the developers that make their platform so good, it does nothing but help everyone.

Just imagine all the monthly subscriptions and trying to get those credit card fees reversed or remembering where to cancel them. Oh god. This is going to be a consumer nightmare when they get multiple $x.xx amount for their kids games they have no idea how to cancel.

I believe they're quite different.

SK: Alternative payments within App Store
US: Alternative payments for in-app purchases
Maybe they are, I thought they were the same

look at the anti Apple media saying that this is a “major win” for Epic games. It’s not a major win for Epic, it’s one count ( a very important one) and something they wanted but they lost a lot more than they gained.

I love how the judge believes Apple isn’t a monopoly despite what Epic thinks. We can now use this as proof😁.

I mean even if Apple is forced to do this how can Epic games gain when they are still banned from the App Store

first anti Apple article
