I assume you are using Linux, BSD, Solaris and the likes as your source for that thought process?

Yes. And that's why I said "as a rule of thumb". It's not always the case. Linux is more secure than Windows or OS X etc. But one cannot use this argument to say Android is more secure simply because it's open. Android and iOS differ in way too many ways involving security. So open vs closed is not the sole focus here.

iOS is designed primarily for the average non Savvy user but that's fine it's a good OS for day to day tasks.

Yeah I used to be one of those morons that thought I was better than everyone else because I built my own PC, customized software and drivers, skinned the OS, etc. Then I realized that I had been wasting my life away ever tweaking and customizing stuff that, when all is said and done, didn't really matter or help me get any actual work done. I'm more productive than ever having computers, phones and tablets I don't have to mess with. I've never had to rebuild a registry hive on any of my Macs, or worry about losing all my work after getting infected with a worm like my coworker did yesterday on her Windows 7 box. If that makes me non-savvy then I don't want to be savvy. You go ahead and have fun futzing around until the day you die you savvy, savvy guy! I'll be over here having a productive life creating things for fun and profit.

Again - you don't have to tweak or customize. The option is there. But it's not a requirement of either OS.

Cool story bro
Its all optional

Yes - sorry - fast typing and I left out a word. You may have never implied you that Android phones didn't work out of the box but it's clear you think it must be tweaked or customized to be of use to the end user.

I have no idea where you think you are getting your facts about customization but I disagree. I would say the majority of people don't customize their Android phones other than typical settings which they would (have) to do on both iOS and Android regardless of which phone they owned.

I get it though - Android frustrates you. I just don't see how your experience equates to fact.

No, I don't think it must be tweaked. I'd prefer if everything were standardized. It would give me less of a headache whenever I see these things. I never said I want to see all Android phones customized to the point of unrecognizable. Confused why you think I meant that.

I get my facts from the user base I deal with every day; typically technically advanced faculty, staff and students. I would say that these people that I meet don't just set their brightness and volume and call it a day, but I'm just saying...

Let me end this. I'll trade my actual user base that I see day in and day out with yours, whoever or whatever they may be, wherever they are.

I've never seen a bare-bones version of Android land on my desk. Whether or not you believe that is entirely up to you. :)

Exactly. I used to build PC's, and ran Android phones and thought I was all tech savvy because I rooted my phone and was side loading Apps. My first move away from this live was my first Mac. At first I missed tinkering, but after awhile I realized I was missing out on life tinkering. Then I got my first iPhone and never went back.

No you don't have to tinker with an Android phone. You can just download some apps and use it. However, everyone in THIS THREAD keeps saying that's how a technically savvy person would use their Android phone and that Android Phones are for the Tech Savvy, so to say "you don't have to customize" goes against all of the arguments for Android in this thread!

I don't see where he was saying iOS is not secure?

People are so quick to defend Apple at every opportunity that they don't even read posts in full before jumping to post about how much better iOS is.

Are you saying all those who laugh at the conference were Apple Fan who would defend IOS without adequate knowledge?

We clearly aren't communicating well because I never said what you said I said. I understand your point of view. I just think it's hyperbole. That's all. It's your use case. That doesn't make it applicable to generalize.

Maybe that is why it is the #1 phone by far for Americans over 45 years old. In others words, generally not tech savvy. Sometimes stereotypes are closer to reality than most would like to admit.

So everyone over 45 is not tech savvy? Child, I've forgotten more about technology than you are ever likely to know. And I could still spin circles around most of you young-ins.

:p

No we aren't, because I directly responded to the 2 following statements you made:

[...]but it's clear you think it must be tweaked or customized to be of use to the end user.[...]

I responded with "I don't".

[...]I would say the majority of people don't customize their Android phones other than typical settings[...]

I responded with "they do".

Oh well. Thanks for the debate without the need to personally attack or insult - which is much more than most attest to when involved with these kinds of topics.

He's not joking... I think more thiefs/robbers will steal or rob iPhone than Android mobile. So, definitely Android mobild is more secured.

Indeed. Perhaps because I'm not (and I assume you're not) emotionally attached to either platform but recognize that different strokes for different folks.

Remember that old Reagan line... Trust but verify... I don't trust, and he can't verify. So I guess it's a case of Eric drinking his own batch.

Funny thing is that in August the FBI and Department of Homeland Security released a report on mobile malware that indicated 79 percent of mobile malware threats affect Android. Another 19 percent of the threats target Symbian. Apple's iOS was targeted by less than 1 percent of mobile malware threats. CNET

Glad this clown isn't running Google anymore. This is a Steve Ballmer in the making. He is old and lame. Needs to in a corner and count something.

I think Schmidt has a very dry sense of humor. He repeated himself after getting laughs. Some of his other comments have been so over the top ridiculous that you have to believe he is kidding around.

I believe your assessment is 100% correct.

Yet Apple fans love to pick apart anything from any competitor to bolster their feelings about their phone.

These are trusted entities? Not quite sure about that, there's an awful lot of evidence to suggest...

I think Schmidt has a point. Yes android has malware, but usually that's through sideloaded apps. I don't hear about lock screen bypasses, making phone calls using specific methods when a phone is locked. There are other examples.

You don't hear about those because anything Apple does gets Page One press time, whereas if a HTC SuperTurbo has a problem no one cares but the people with that phone.

Did you see Page One press when Android face unlock was spoofed with a picture that takes seconds to create?

Ok, and how about when someone spent 30 hours reproducing a fingerprint to spoof the Apple Touch ID sensor? How many times did you hear about that?

Why do you believe that iOS is designed for non savvy users? Having a device that works great, is consistent, powerful, and polished isn't something the tech savvy are interested in? Okay...

you cant customize the OS at all and Apple continually works to destroy jailbreaks. You have got to be kidding me if you think this is a customizable OS.

tech savvy individuals generally go after a product that fits their needs then customize it to perfection.

Android OEMs have the choice to implant security features on Hardware or Software. Many of them in order to save cost choose to use software instead of chips making it easier to hack (for example where all your passwords are saved!)

Yeah maybe in full specs and none modified ROM Android stands a better chance but not after what the OEMs do with it :D

what is this stuff youre making up called? bs?

----------

... You listed a primary vulnerability of Android, but then critized iOS for lacking the same vulnerability. I'm confused... Weren't you trying to argue Android was more secure?

the stock ROMS out of Android are more secure than iOS anyday.
