So the EU will compensate people who have their phones destroyed by cheap cables from China? Will they compensate people who have property destroyed when cheap cables melt and start fires?

I expect the answer is absolutely yes. Or rather, the EU will force whoever sold the cable (Amazon?) to compensate people. In the case of a fire, they could potentially extradite whichever company employee is responsible and ship them off to jail for manslaughter.

Complain all you want about MFI certifications but at least it guarantees that the cable will be robust enough to handle the draw from the device.

The EU has their own certification, called "CE". The certification should guarantee the cable will function correctly and it's highly illegal to sell non-CE cables in Eruope.

All MFI cables are also CE certified (at least they are if they're sold in the EU). Double certification is ridiculous. CE isn't going away though, so the right answer is to remove MFI certification.

Im sure apple will comply with the letter of the law. I want to thank the EU for equate that will accrue due to people throwing out their lightning cables.
Ah yes, because all cables last forver, people never throw out broken cables today or get new cables, and overnight all lightning devices will simply vanish instead of slow attrition

I thought they whole reason was so that people can charge. So, you can. If you want extra features, buy an Apple version. I see not problem with that. Just like buying a car. BWM has models that are fast and some that are slower. You pay more, you get more. Tesla does this all day long with software. They limit the Model 3 long range with software. You pay extra money and they unlock more performance. I guess it's slightly different as you have buy a whole new cable.

That said, the Apple cable sucks. Fall apart easily. But, I have used at least 10 different brands of 3rd party lighting cables and they fail before Apple cables. Certified or not. Took me a long time to find a decent model. If Apple wants to build a killer cable, have my kids test them. They are cable killers.

Can they also require apple to let us place icons wherever we want on the Homescreen??
I want this desperately. Is this too much to ask for?

USB C will not cut for me, i need thunderbolt 4 speeds, i transfer around 500 GB of files from/to my iPhone every day, i can't wait for Apple to use Thunderbolt 5 with 100 Gbps transfer speeds please.

I would sue EU if that happens, EU forced every one to use USB C cable/port.

In response to this rumor, European Commissioner Thierry Breton has sent Apple a letter warning the company that limiting the functionality of USB-C cables would not be permitted and would prevent iPhones from being sold in the EU when the law goes into effect, according to German newspaper Die Zeit. The letter was obtained by German press agency DPA, and the report says the EU also warned Apple during a meeting in mid-March.

Sigh…..

These commissioner don’t know how technology works, do they……

From what I heard from rumor mill, technology limitation on A16 chip will prevent full thunderbolt speed on USB-C on iPhones. Only A17 chip on iPhone 15 Pro will allow full thunderbolt level speed on the new USB-C ports.

Hysterical to the point of comedy.

Apple got forced by regulation to ditch their money spinning proprietry port for one that is technically superior. No other phone manufacturer was effected because they were all using it anyway.

I doubt it will effect your dividend and it isn't a globalist conspiracy.

It shouldn't have affected anyone because there shouldn't be a regulation in the first place. I'm not an Apple shareholder, and, again, I couldn't care less what port they use. My point is it should be up to Apple and Apple alone how they design their product, including the I/O. I never said nor even implied there was a conspiracy.

Lmao, you couldn’t be more wrong.

Yea. Good luck with that.

CE only assures conformance with health and safety, not functionality.

Given the "law" isn't going to be introduced until Dec 2024, it doesn't really effect the iPhone 15 given it will be released before the law goes live....and technically, so will the iPhone 16!
I really hope Apple delays USB C just to give the EU the middle finger.
There is no evidence. I just see the inevitable bitching where people ask a government to allow one thing and then the unintended consequence happens and then they demand the same government to fix the problem they voted the government to do.

This is why I love democracy.
And yet you live in a Republic 🙄

Just to reiterate:

The EU regulations come in for new devices in 2025. The new EU regulations say nothing about how the iPhone 15 acts, or the iPhone 16 (at least the first colours, the later colour could be impacted).

Apple doesn't HAVE to follow these rules until the iPhone 17.

Also, the EU regulations only talk about charging, so Apple can certainly limit DATA speeds on uncertified equipment all it wants.

That is a very good point. Someone needs to forward this to the EU as well. Yes, we’re halfway to 2023 and this exists. This is the problem!

Exactly why I now use an MX Master 3 - this is a design screw up in a massive scale - cannot use the thing when charging....WTF Even though the MX Master gets really, really long life, when it does need a charge I can still use it with charging cable plugged in. The above is classic Apple form over function

I think their point was that Apple can't limit cable speed or functionality just because it isn't MFI certified.

Yeah, and can the EU also require that they update the Magic Mouse while they’re at it? The placement of the charge port on that device is just criminal!
How come the magic mouse doesn't have wireless charging... and the mouse pad is the wireless charging pad. Never have to plug it in or worry about it being charged ever again.

except it's the correct charging spot

putting charge port on the front frays the apple cables because they weren't designed for movement. they could include the braided cables but that means you have to pack that special braided cable for travel, so accessibility to existing cables is a priority.

mx master 3 is a much thicker mouse and doesn't need to worry about multitouch which means better battery life. multitouch on a mouse works better on a thinner mouse. and logitech doesn't care about accessibility to existing cables.

Android has been using USB-C for half a decade, and funny how there aren't rampant reports of Android phones being destroyed by cheap cables.
