Really a downer event.

iPhone SE becoming more expensive instead of cheaper. Ridiculous, as it will end up even more expensive in my country.

No MacBook Air. Seriously, the M1 MacBook Air is getting old now. And countries like mine are still stuck without options for more than base 8GB of RAM.

No 27” iMac nor more powerful iMac.

M1 iPad Air, overpowered SoC for what though? The A15 would’ve been fine. At least Apple didn’t increase the price, I guess.

Mac Studio starting at $2000. Sure you get a great machine, but man, Apple is really pushing the prices.
I don’t usually do this, but this is the time that I miss Steve Jobs. Jobs tended to try to attract new user into the Apple ecosystem by not only catering to the high end, but also on the lower end (original Mac mini for $499, iPod shuffle, trickling down previously flagship iPhone into lower prices year by year, etc). The current Apple is pushing more towards the sky instead, extracting more money from the fans and alienating non-Apple users with out of this world pricing. Instead of the computer for us mere mortals, Apple is becoming more of computer for the top 0.1%.

I was poised to fire the gun on a Mac mini but waited to see if it got a makeover.

Disappointed it didn’t but the two years comes up this Autumn, so who knows? That RAM upgrade would be good on the M1, but then I’d also have to add a webcam, keyboard and trackpad and hook it up to the screen I already have, at which point it’s not much of a saving over a MacBook Pro and without the portability (and extra screen).

A side note, they all pronounced it "siliken", not "silicone" — "cone" seems more natural to me. Never noticed it at the last event, or knew it was a thing. Must be a directive from marketing, don't say "cone".

Disappointed with the new Mac Studio. It packs a lot of power for those who need it. I was looking for internal expansion, however. RAM non-user replacable, SSD non user-replacable. I will buy a 14" MBP instead. Trading CPU power (not critical for my use case) for a screen and portable form factor. Expandability is external only on both machines.

I am right there with you, as I just wanted a DEVONthink server. I feel like Mac discounts are a relatively new thing, and even when we see discounts they aren’t that much. This means the best value for a Mac is to buy day one. Because the longer you own it the more time you have to recover the cost. I've typically gotten 6-10 years out of a Mac which means they often outlive their usefulness.

This makes me wonder, do I buy a juiced-up mini in the Studio form factor and hope the higher-end CPU gets me double the lifespan, do I buy an old mini knowing its lifespan is diminished, or do I wait and hope the savings covers the lost time?

The mini got some really nice accessories that allowed for the illusion of internal expansion. It's not perfect, but there isn't anything like it for laptops.

Today's "Peek Performance" event was more exciting than we initially thought it would be, with Apple debuting a new Mac Studio machine and Studio Display alongside a 5G version of the iPhone SE with A15 chip and an M1 iPad Air with 5G chip.

It took Apple an hour to go over all of today's announcements, but we've summarized all of the new product details in a quick seven minute video. Below, we've also rounded up all of our coverage today so you don't miss anything.
Mac Studio

M1 Ultra

Hard to believe the headless super Mac is finally here. This is decades in the making! The potential of the new Apple Silicon Mac pro is probably giving Intel nightmares.

Great video @MacRumors team

How did they want to expand the M1 chip to create M2 and other variants that would allow a 1.5 TB Mac Pro capacity? Can anyone guess?
they dont. not unless mac pro chip is something else entirely, and i think the mac pro market is not large enough to justify totally custom chip (just so you understand, most xeon CPUs use same die as their server counterparts - and thats massive market in comparison to pro market)

only thing coming to mind is using newer memory chips when they become available that would double their capacity. so quad m1max would have 256 gb at current chip size, and 512 gb when capacity doubles.

What is it about Apple and those 27 inch monitors?
Why can't they go past that?
At least 30!

Well... It really make me yearn for the days of some real exciting innovation. A new Green Phone? Wow what a watershed event. Was looking for the new Air but am going to have to live with the one I have for now. I must compliment the production value of the event however, had to turn my laptop down just like my TV when high production music starts! Good times again with Apple.

I think Apple made it pretty clear that there will not be a 27" iMac. It was replaced today with the Mac Studio & display.
Tend to agree, though I think there is still a bit of wiggle room in the language for a larger, regular M1 iMac - that would just be a variation of the 24" so not technically a new product line. They've had smaller and bigger iMacs for years, it would seem an opportunity to keep doing it. I do think the Mac Studio means no iMac PRO though but it's very expensive compared to a typical larger screen iMac. Apple released the original iMac Pro and just left it as a once off. (So strange but probably revenue driven how they just ditch products like that.)

The case has been made that technically the memory controllers should be able to drive "normal" DDR5 memory. So, considering the M1 Ultra basically has 8 memory channels, 2TB of memory isn't out of the question. You just lose a lot of performance considering that such a configuration would introduce much higher latency to the memory subsystem, so the GPU would suffer pretty badly because of this.

Also: what application would you run on a Mac that needs that amount of memory?

I want to be positive about this but I can tell you that Apple has not developed any innovation in their product design they have continued to use the same old product design they've been using since the 90s since the launch of the apple cube and although the insides of changed not much else splitting these products into two things may give some people some flexibility but if you want a larger screen iMac I guess you're out of luck I guess I'll just have to use my 27 inch iMac until it catches fire. Apple you are so disappointing.

so basically apple doesn't want to support 8K because it would hurt their 6k monitor sales? eewww.......

That would be an INSANELY bad decision and utterly illogical. Many, MANY customers (such as myself) want/need an iMac that i) has a larger display that the M1 24" iMac ii) is more powerful/has more ports/has greater storage capacity iii) is in more neutral colours (ie, black/grey) and iv) is at a REASONABLE price (ie $2000-3000). The new studio system is no replacement whatsoever, as at it's MINIMUM we're talking about over $3500 for the display and computer.

Exactly, for goodness sake we now have, what, 4 different iPhone variations?!

The elusive Mac mid-tower finally makes an appearance, albeit with no upgradability which I think we’ve all been conditioned to let go of by now.

All I can think of is the 2008 MR era of the forums, and all the pleading for a “headless” iMac.

The Mac Studio totally stole the show—great release and just what creatives have been asking from Apple for… gosh, 20 years or so? :D

I just wish they would dispense with the endless stream of superlatives during these presentations. Yes, these machines are 'phenomenal', 'amazing', 'like we've never seen before', etc, etc. I get it. But the more you use those words Apple, the more meaningless they become. My theory is that it's better to let viewers speak out those things for themselves. I found myself saying, 'that's impressive' during the Studio's unveiling, and when you say it yourself, you believe it—as opposed to feeling like you're drowning in marketing BS.

Is that just me? Is it a cultural difference between Australians and Americans perhaps?? Tell me, my fellow MR members from other countries… do you find the non-stop superlatives cringe-worthy too, or do you not notice it so much?

Yes, exactly my thoughts as well! Showing our ages aren't we. :)

You can always pair your Studio Display with a Mac Mini. Let's assume you want to go 16/512 with that, you'll end up with 2699. You get three additional USB-C ports on the back of the display, while retaining 2 USB-A and a TB port on the Mini itself. How many more ports do you need?

The cringe is real, I agree.
