You release the new ipad - with a USB-C adapter for lighting for the older gen Apple Pencil.
Why not just add support for Apple Pencil 2?

The you add the landscape on a base iPad -> and you don't do the same on iPad Pro which is the most used in that orientation.

Then you release an iPad Pro M2 - which adds nothing to the table - and the price for gap between M2 iPad pro vs M1 iPad pro in Europe is somewhere between 400 EUR for a nothing upgrade.

Now go to sleep enlightened friend.
Anyone forcing you to upgrade iPads? No. Is your life devastated or adversely impacted by not having to upgrade iPads? No. Is your world going to end skipping the m2 iPad? No. Money burning a hole in your pocket? Obviously.

Have some perspective.

While we didn't have a full-blown Apple event today, it has felt almost as busy as one with Apple announcing updates for three significant product lines: the iPad, iPad Pro, and Apple TV. All of the coverage from today can be tough to keep up with, so check out our video recap of the announcements and a list of our news article below.

In addition to the hardware announcements today, we also learned about release dates for iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura, and Apple also seeded to developers the final versions of iOS 16.1, watchOS 9.1, and tvOS 16.1 that will be released to the public next week.

Apple missed a huge opportunity on the iPad Pro, I was really hoping for some more innovation this release. I'll have to wait until the next time around.

I think they skipped it because it would require a major redesign due to the magnetic area where the 2nd gen pencil charges. The base iPad still uses the gen 1 pencil so it's a non-issue there.
I suspect this is exactly the issue. Apple has a lot going on on the sides of iPads…volume buttons, power button, speakers, gen 2 Apple Pencil charging, USB-C port, connection point for keyboards, etc. Unless Apple gets creative or does a complete redesign, the top landscape side can probably only accommodate the gen 2 Apple Pencil or a landscape side camera, not both.

Moving the camera on the Pros to landscape would mean no gen 2 Apple Pencil charging/pairing.

Moving the camera on the base iPad to landscape meant no magnetic charging and only being able to use the gen 1 pencil (or no pencil at all).

I suspect Apple will figure something out for a future re-design…perhaps adding the dynamic island, lowing the camera system out of the bezel and behind the display allowing the gen 2 pencil charging to remain in the bezel on the same side…or maybe a new keyboard that charges the pencil (I think some of the more recent MS Surface units do this).

Anyway, until a redesign happens, we are just getting a modest CPU upgrade. The 2020 update wasn’t much different.

I got what I wanted with the new Apple TV 4K 3rd gen. Ordered it immediately. I needed a new one, and this is very nice.

The iPad Pros were very underwhelming, but that’s why there was no event for them. It’s cool that the Apple Pencil 2nd gen gains new functions on these new Pros. Other than that, uh, not much else to talk about.

The 10th gen iPad seems very respectable until you see the price and the fact that it’s still supporting Apple Pencil 1st gen. Wonder how these will sell. Really dig the landscape front camera. Probably not worth $449+ just for that new feature.

Its not always about money I think. The ethos is a device that will eventually need no connectors. The Apple Watch for example is where they are gunning for, but for a main device. Right now the laws of physics seem to be denying them. Bluetooth has too much latency , wi-fi/iCloud cant transfer data faster than a thunderbolt drive, Airplay cant play a full quality signal with no latency to a tv etc..

But if all the above gets better they will see no need to have any ports at all. Your device will just connect and sync with everything. That's the utopia. But we just aren't there yet.Maybe 5 yrs away?
So why remove functionality if the tech isn’t there?

Like I said before, they would have had to add the magnetic charging system into the iPad and that would have cost money. I would almost put money on that being the reasoning behind the Apple Pencil 1 still being used with this iPad.
I feel like they could’ve at least thrown in the pencil adapter free with the purchase of an iPad and/or gen 1 pencil. Charging customers $10 for their lack of ingenuity seems insulting.

A bit off topic, but dynamic island was enough for the Apple sheeple. This should be no different….

Apple are weird like that. They have that “skate to where the puck will be” mentality. But they get ahead of themselves a lot.

That’s why people moaned at Jonny Ive. He was obsessed with making devices for a future that wasn’t actually here. And it just annoyed people.

They seemed to be winding that back but I also think it’s part of their dna.

That’s good but doesn’t help those that already own a pencil. And at the end of the day that adapter is a stupid solution to a problem apple created themselves.
Not really stupid, they get money out of you no matter what.

Y A W N........ No wonder why they didn't have a live event. They'd need to wake every one up when its over.
What ever happened to Apple's mantra, "Think Different"?
I really get a kick out of their "Magic keyboard folio".....ummm Logitech has been offering almost that identical keyboard as an option for about a year now. Big whup.
Completely dissapointed.

Good news for people who are buying their first iPad. Of course they're not the people who are visiting here. People on this site wanted more from the advanced devices - thus the high level of disappointment voiced.

A little too tight on their pipeline rather than spreading it out for better deliverables
