I think Apple made a number of missteps here that they would not have made under Jobs. The landscape camera makes no sense, the price point for the new ipad is crazy, the lack of a charging cable for the siri remote, the lack of an ethernet port on the cheap apple tv model, it points to people being under pressure to make more money and not to create great products.

The philosophy of Jobs Apple was to create great products, where everything just works, and to have great service for the consumer. At a price point that makes sense to the market. And this latest set of updates is not doing that anymore.

Everyone knew what to expect and has laid out their gripes pretty clearly. "Upgrading" a $329 iPad to a $449 iPad is ridiculous enough, but with the weird adapter pencil thing, it's just outrageous.

The new iPad is a bad offer. It's WAY too expensive, on top of not being good enough.

The first iPad was $500 when it came out. I thought we'd moved on long from those days, at LEAST with the cheapest model you would think they'd not go over 399 at most. Nobody is going to buy this and it sucks. It's not that we don't understand.
All prices have been going way up in recent years, if you haven't noticed.
The cheapest iPad has always represented a great deal but it featured a really outdated design. They waited for an actual upgrade to increase the price, that also makes a lot of sense to me.
It's almost the exact operation as the Macbook Air: the old cheapest model with the same design stayed the same, the new design, with colours and a couple new features costs more.
Was it a bad strategy? Is the new Air not selling well?
I sincerely don't know but I haven't seen a lot of people complaining about it.

OMG, Korea is in shock... the 256gb Mini 6 just jumped in price to over 1 million South Korean won. A few months ago, that was about $800 US. That's just insane! These have been selling new from resellers for just about 630,000, as of earlier this week. Absolutely insane.

In my opinion, apple is now far away from innovation and better device philosophy. They are more into removing ports and accessories, lowering display and quality but increasing prices. I think it’s time to explore Android with much better options, prices and app store. From past 2 years, I am inclining more towards android than ios/apple because of these new product launch with no excitement of innovation but disappointment of price hike and removal of accessories and ports..

Agreed. It's frustrating that a bumped Mini wasn't included today. I'm looking to replace my 2014 model. The Mini is such a great machine and Apple has a sad history of neglecting it. I hope this isn't a sign of more of that. Hopefully it's coming later this month or in Nov. Who knows?
Obviously, it's not coming at all. We already had the same-enclosure different-chip model. Next up is the Mac mini redesign around a new thermal envelope. Maybe multiple colors, definitely thinner and never without a keynote.

SJ is dead... move on now. You don't have to like the new designs but bringing SJ up after 11 years, having no clue what he may or may not design these days, is silly.
I think you’re missing the point. Obviously SJ is gone, but the philosophy he instilled - the philosophy that cemented Apple - transcends one person, and for Tim Cook to be shoving that whole philosophy aside so easily is an insult to both Apple fans and Apple’s history, which doesn’t bode well for its future.

Having to plug the pencil in to charge is an issue. But the fact that the pencil is lightning while the iPad is now USBC is utterly absurd. Not only do you have to continue to plug it in, but you also now need an adapter that they charge $10 for. On a new product. In 2022. Made the largest/most profitable company in the world. Apple, ladies and gentlemen.
I said besides that, which I agree is stupid.

Then there’s no place to add the magnetic charging stripe, or require significant engineering, or simply abandon base iPad line altogether.

It’s comical in the surface, but apple doesn’t want to use iPad Air mould for 10th gen iPad, which comes with magnetic Chargoing stripe.

That’s more worrying Than I thought. If apple really want to turn macOS into a glorified iPadOS, then the addition of stage manager suddenly makes sense. Over time they remove terminals, remove power user features, disable apps that are not downloaded inside App Store, restrict disk access… Omg.

The position of that product plus the price point. Does apple somehow believe people would buy a DEDICATED video call machine just for that landscape camera?
Also that apple pencil charging Issue is because apple doesn’t want to support Apple Pencil 2 on lower end iPad, thus not including magnetic charging stripe. So they have the room for landscape camera.

You seem confused what "insulting" means.

I understood you, I was just reiterating that it’s hard to look past because it’s a huge oversight on their part.

But to answer your question: besides that gigantic issue it’s fine.

It's not a gigantic issue though. It's a stupid design that's overcome with a dongle. So what? Many people don't even use the Pencil to begin with. I'm actually happy, because now I can get this adapter and charge the Pencil off of another charger, without having to connect it to the iPad.

If you think it's "gigantic", then clearly Apple missed the mark for your usage, and you should either move upstream to the Air, downstream to the 9th gen, or perhaps there's an Android tablet for you. Vote with your wallet. "Gigantic" is hyperbolic though, IMO.

If it doesn’t bother you that’s great, but many of us here see it as a problem and are dissuaded from purchasing it for said reason. I personally expected Apple Pencil 2 compatibility, so to not only not get that but then also have a dongle requirement…that’s just rubbing salt in the wound for me.

I think people were expecting it to replace the 9th gen at the same price point.
Valid point. I think that while perhaps it can be blamed supply chain, that's conjecture on my part. It does help me decide between the still available 9th gen or the M1 Air for me, as I plan to move from the 8th gen (to give to my son).

So dramatic. What caused the wound?

What I'd consider idiotic is that they want people to spend upwards of a grand for something that Apple themselves don't offer their professional apps for. Where's Logic X? Where's FCPX? If it weren't for third party devs, there'd be nothing "Pro" about an iPad Pro.

While we didn't have a full-blown Apple event today, it has felt almost as busy as one with Apple announcing updates for three significant product lines...

I know, it felt almost as busy and convoluted as their current iPad lineup.
Feels much like it used to before Jobs came in and whipped their product lines into shape.

I know the Apple lovers are going to thumb this post down, but I can't help feeling that Apple have lost their grip on their super tight focus that saw them become #1 with only three or even just two distinct products in each product line while they successfully and brilliantly rode the fine line between creating desirable yet exclusively priced premium products and excessively nickel and diming their customers into shutting their wallets.

Just look at the complete fustercluck of an iPad lineup. Where is Apple's legendary consistency? Where is the conscious and purposeful brand traits that once percolated through their entire catalogue?

We have XR generation design language mixed with 12 pro mixed with iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 language with thumb ID, power button ID, Face ID, Masked Face ID, Lighting connector and USB-C connector, Apple Pencil 1 AND Pencil 2 differentiation, hover pencil, non hover pencil, four or more distinct CPU generations in concurrent products... IOS 16, IPADOS 15... LCD displays, Retina, Liquid Retina, Liquid Retina XDR... Pro Motion and Regular Motion... DAFQ happened to Apple these last three years?

I can envisage Jobs in the product lineup discussion panel meeting walking up to the current board members and giving them seven shades of hell before beating them to death with the indestructible Apple Watch Ultra, arguably Apple's ONLY profoundly compelling product released this year.

Honestly, if they sold the new magic keyboard folio for $150 rather than $250, the new iPad would make a lot more sense. The minimalist could buy a nice little tablet + keyboard package for ~$600, which might be enough for those looking for a simple solution. For example, there are lots of people with employer supplied computers (likely a PC) that just need something simple for home use. Retired folks might buy this package. High school students could be another customer base.

The problem with the current pricing of the base iPad + keyboard is that it is too close to the cost of M1 MBAs that are consistently on sale by third party retailers.

There's an alternative:

Been using it with my 7th then 8th gen iPads for a couple years now, and absolutely love it.

I firmly believe that Apple raised the prices exceedingly high with the express intent of lowering them as some sort of discount worthy of increased sales six months from now when the economy is in a deep recession. They've priced them up to price them down later.

Or your currency just crashed versus the dollar. 🤷
