One thing is fo’ sho’…we’re gettin’ some ugly a.. phones! Maybe they’ll give everyone a free case?

They do that sort of thing, right?

Apple only get money of me this year if they release a M-chip iPad mini.
Assuming I can use stage manager on an external display, I’d probably go for one of these too. I’d make it my tiny portable device and desktop. I’d also like FaceID, but I’m probably asking for too much now.

I’m genuinely curious if the AI they’re putting into the new phones is actually going to make the phone better. AI in phones so far seems mostly gimmicky and the latest marketing tactic. Circling an item in a photo and searching for it (Samsung and Google’s latest feature) isn’t exactly a great capability. Translating languages on the fly? Most people would maybe use that on a vacation or two, if ever at all.

But Apple’s ecosystem being so integrated could actually offer some potentially useful features. Siri being able to access any/most App data could allow you to do almost anything via verbal command. Can’t imagine latency would be great at all though… will be interesting to see if it’s more gimmicks or if someone is actually starting to do something with AI in consumer products.

You do have to wonder if Apple does any market research before choosing these colours (aside from monitoring their own sales), or are they in the somewhat arrogant mindset of thinking they are the trendsetters?

My guess is a lot of people are getting tired of dull colours. There are still a LOT of dull bitumen-coloured cars on our roads, so maybe I'm wrong? Anyway, here's my attempt at 'shaking things up' just a little bit more…

My six-year-old son suggests there should be a Spider-Man phone as well. I could agree with that. 😄 (Before anyone asks, no he doesn't have or use a phone yet, and we'll do our best to give him a device-free childhood for some years to come!)
i'd legit buy 3 of these to match different outfits. why is this so hard for them?

Undeniably true.
literally all they need to do is change the look up every 2-3 years, why is this so hard? i find it hard to believe the tooling costs for changing from square to round edges etc could be high enough to significantly impact their profit margin at this scale, and i feel like the increased sales from people bored with the old design would outweigh it 🤷🏼‍♀️

or for the love of god at least some fun colors if you're going to keep the same design. i love porsches despite the slow evolution in aesthetic, but at least you can get some beautiful bright colors on them to express your personality. Apple is going to lose it's core fanbase of people who "think different" if they continue down this boring path

More than likely I'll get a new battery installed in my iPhone 12 mini after Monday's announcements rather than upgrading.

What about the upgraded radios/modems and superior cameras? If the iPhone is your only camera and videocorder, that may make it worth the upgrade.

At least that's my thinking -- we've gotten rid of every single camcorder and camera except for (1) iPhones and (2) a Canon EOS M50, a newbie point-and-shoot with included zoom lens. Probably going to get two iPhone 15 when the price drop hits, due to better radios/modem and better cameras and processing.

I could go for a Spiderman themed iPhone as long as it is themed after the original series. I use the theme song as my ringtone.

I just finished watching the movie Jobs and it reminded me of what it seems like Apple is missing right now: a sense of whimsy. I’m all for industrial design and minimalism, but at the same time, I miss the culture at Apple that gave us things like the Aqua interface, colorful iMacs and iBooks, the iMac G4, and even the admittedly imperfect G4 Cube. It just seems like everything today is iterative. It is time for something bold.

I'm looking forward to Monday's iPhone announcement/event and will likely purchase a 16PM as soon as Apple accepts orders. Ditto with my wife.

I hope those colors are wrong, they're so freaking ugly. They look like old early 80s colors for plastic (I dont know how to describe that but I think some may know what I mean).

They look pretty nice to me. Presumably the colours/finish will be different with the Pro models anyway. And you can always buy black or white if you don't like this year's colours.

I think many people don't realize Jobs was head of Apple at a time when personal computers and mobile phones were pretty much in their infancy. That was a looong time ago. That market is pretty mature now.

If Jobs were CEO today, I don't see the same breakthroughs as when he was CEO back then. It should also be remembered Jobs' Mac was pretty much a lift of PARC's (Palo Alto Research Center) computer with its graphical user interface (after he was invited to their lab to see it in action), with the mouse developed by Doug Engelbart at SRI (Stanford Research Institute). That tech, a computer with a GUI and mouse, was not something he conceived.

What cracks me up is all the moaning about Apple not innovating anymore. Yet people who claim that can't seem to put forward any fresh ideas of their own. Not a single one.

I have watched a lot of the Apple Events, but I'm not sure if I really need to watch this one. I would love some software updates but they took care of that at WWDC. I also would be interested in a new Apple TV, but it's more TVOS which I wish they improved. All the big companies have their AI now. Seems like that's it for innovation for the next 3 years or so.

I take your point about how the market has matured, and I by no means want to imply that Apple is not innovating. If anything, I suppose my comment was more about form than function. Either that, or I am just feeling nostalgic. Or both. 🤓

I want AI that is more interactive. It seems like the biggest use of AI right now is image creation and spelling and grammer, but we used to have (Better) spell checks and image creation might be good for artists but not for someone like Accountants. For me, I want a phone that is kind of like a Star Trek communicator, where I can have a conversation back and forth and it helps me cook a nice Thanksgiving dinner or an easier way to point me in the right direction. I also would love a phone that actually made me dinner, and cleaned up but that's way off, and then you get into the ethical nature of that and machine slavery (And then they become intelligent enough to fight back and nuke the world but I digress).

No worries, mate. My comment about people here complaining that Apple doesn't innovate anymore wasn't directed at you. Rather, it's the chorus here saying that over and over and over again, going back almost 20 years.

I’m a photographer and have multiple cameras, strobes, lenses and lights. For the typical person I’d agree with you but I’m more than covered when it comes to cameras.

Another year with no reason to upgrade anything unless the battery is dead or something.
LOL I had a (used) iPhone 7 for many years until the battery couldn't take my instensive all day use. Then I had to get an iPhone 14. The whole iOS is so stable it's tough to want to upgrade when they gave you a nearly perfect device to start with. I bought the first iPhone on the first day of its release in 2007 btw, and it was fun to stand in line and talk to people. Only time I have ever done that.

Apple will hold its annual fall iPhone-centric event on Monday, September 9 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. There are multiple new devices on the horizon, including new iPhone 16 models, refreshes for all of the Apple Watches, new AirPods 4, and perhaps some other surprises.

This guide highlights everything that we might see at Apple's "It's Glowtime" event based on current rumors.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will look almost identical to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, with few design changes planned, but there are new capabilities to look forward to.

Apple plans to bring the Action Button to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, so it won't be a Pro-exclusive feature anymore and will be available on all iPhone 16 models. The Action Button can be set to turn on a Focus mode, activate a Shortcut, open the Camera, activate the Flashlight, and more. With iOS 18, it can do even more because you can also assign Control Center controls to the Action Button, and third-party developers can now make Control Center options.

Dummy models featuring the rumored iPhone 16 colors

Along with the Action Button, all iPhone 16 models could have a Capture Button, located on the right side of the iPhone below the Power Button. On U.S. iPhones, it will be located where the mmWave antenna is on the iPhone 15 models, with the antenna moving to the left with the iPhone 16 lineup. While most rumors have suggested it's coming to all models, there is a chance that it could be limited to the Pro models.

The Capture Button will be used to take images and video, and it will respond to pressure and touch for extra gesture support. A light press will autofocus, while a harder press will take the shot. Swiping left and right will zoom in or out, and there may also be an option for swapping between photo and video modes.

Rather than the diagonal camera that Apple has used for the last several iPhone models, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have a vertical camera arrangement for the dual-lens camera system. The vertical arrangement could allow for the iPhones to capture spatial video for the Vision Pro.

The Main camera isn't expected to get an upgrade, but Apple might boost the aperture of the Ultra Wide camera to improve low-light performance and add support for macro mode for the first time.

There will be new colors for the iPhone 16 models, with some rumors suggesting we'll see black, green, light pink, blue, and white for five total color options, and other rumors pointing toward green, white, pink, and blue. In both of these scenarios, the white replaces the yellow Apple used for the iPhone 15 models. Apple is rumored to be using the color-infused back glass that it used for the iPhone 15, but with a frosted effect for the glass that contrasts with the frame color.

Apple could opt for a more power efficient OLED display that might improve battery life while also increasing overall brightness.

A18 chips will be in all the iPhone 16 models, which means the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will support the Apple Intelligence features that are coming in iOS 18. There could also be some iPhone-specific Apple Intelligence functionality that hasn't yet been announced.

The A18 chips will be built on TSMC's 3-nanometer process, with Apple expected to include Neural Engine improvements for Apple Intelligence. Both iPhone 16 models will get 8GB RAM, up from 6GB in the prior-generation models in order to support AI. Apple may also be planning for a new thermal design that will combat overheating and improve performance.

There could be some minor increases to battery life for the standard iPhone 16 model, as it is rumored to be getting a minor capacity boost. Depending on the chip efficiency, we could see some small improvements for both models, but that will depend on how much battery the new features eat up.

We have more on the features coming to the iPhone 16 in our roundup.

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max

Like the iPhone 16 models, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will get the all-new Capture Button, and in these devices, it will be accompanied by some camera improvements.

Apple is planning for a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens that uses pixel binning down to 12-megapixels, and the end result is basically much better performance in low-light for your wide-angle shots and your macro photos. The 5x Telephoto lens that was limited to the 15 Pro Max will be coming to the 16 Pro, so both Pro models will have it this time around.

iPhone-16-Pro-Left-Side-Feature.jpg

The iPhone 16 Pro models may be able to record 4K video at up to 120 frames per second, an increase over the current 60 frames per second limit when filming in 4K. Apple has also tested 8K recording, but it is not clear if that made it into the launch version of the device. Apple also plans to add a feature for pausing and resuming a video recording.

Display size is getting bigger, and it's the first time we've seen an increase in display size since the iPhone 12. The iPhone 16 display will measure in at 6.3 inches, up from 6.1, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch display, up from 6.7 inches. The change is not drastic, but it will be noticeable if you have an iPhone 16 Pro next to an iPhone 15 Pro.

There could be some improvements to the Main camera, and there's a chance the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a new Sony sensor that offers higher-quality images with better dynamic range and noise control.

We're also expecting the bezels around the edge of the display to be slimmed down, and Apple is rumored to be adopting more efficient OLED display technology, so we could see some improvements to brightness and contrast. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the bezels could be about a third smaller.

All of the iPhone 16 models will get an A18 chip, but there could be variants. Apple could use a higher-end A18 chip with an extra GPU core in the Pro models, which would let all iPhone 16 devices run Apple Intelligence, but would still provide for... Click here to read rest of article

I'm in the market for a new Apple Watch. I had the first version stainless steel purchased used cos I'm not a fool. Battery died and it disappeared recently. I can't believe it's been 10 yrs. The sensors in this are the real work they are doing. Blood Pressure monitoring would be worth so much. I bought a cuff to do this but it's so unhandy I ignore it most of the time. And this article mentions nothing about the VO2 monitoring which they were sued for in series 9. (patent trolls?) Apparently that hasn't been resolved for this update. I would rather buy a series 8 if you can't update these sensors.

Are you certain about that? Over the years, I have observed numerous ideas being posted here, and you are merely expressing dissatisfaction with others expressing their opinions. At least those who criticize Apple for its lack of innovation or limited color options provide constructive feedback. Your ungrateful complaining offers no constructive input whatsoever. It is unlikely that large corporations will ever care about your lavish praise on them.
