Looks like the update has hit Engadget, but the news is not all good. A commenter claims to have a friend who interns at Apple says the updates will be coming within two months. That puts this "refresh" coming out sometime between now and late March. :( Take it for what it's worth.

i personally have a friend who works at apple who says that they are going to release an apple robot

What are they waiting for? They should just deliver the latest CPUs as soon as possible. They did it before and they don't need to redesign or to test anything in order to do that. They can do the redesign later when Intel releases the new chipset.

Because an Intern would be the first to know when a new product is going to be released... My ass.

You just blew my mind! My brother in-law's cousin has a friend who used to work and live in Taiwan, apparently he still has friends there. (which is funny, if you'd met the guy) He said that his company he used to work for and I won't say which, has a contract robotic limbs including hands, feet and skin!!!

I thought it was bull****, but if your friend works at apple... is that corroboration?

iRobot. Wait, is that trademark infringement? What about MacBot?

;)

Settle down there, champy. Just passing on the knowledge.

Wasting my LIFE!

i really hope they come out with update for the macbook pro soon, because I've been spending way too much time reading these forums lately. :(I currently have an ibook G4 1.33 Ghz, 512mb ram, 60G HDD. It's been an awesome machine and still works like a charm. But I'm going to be going off to college and I wanted to update to a new computer that'll last me for awhile (4 yrs). I'm not sure I'll be able to buy the new MBP right after it comes out. But I'm dying to see the new specs on it. The curiosity's killing me!

Does anyone have a preference to glossy or matte screen and why?

Does anyone think that the next MBP won't have a standard 256mb ram for graphics?

Specs I want to see:
New processor of course
2G ram
160G HDD
256mb graphics
magnetic latch (won't break so easy!)
LED problems fixed

magnetic latch (won't break so easy!)

Just thought about that today. I'd appreciate it but I guess they have to change the design of the display casing. The ordinary MB has more space for magnets above the screen.

Still, it would be quite cool. I always have a strange feeling when closing the lid of my powerbook. I know it works, but it feels kind of wrong for some reason I can't explain...

I'm in the same boat as you, Timewaister. Except I own an Ibook G4 1.2 GHz with 512 mb RAM (added 254 stick) and only 30 GB HD D:

I have the money now after saving up for a long time and I'm really glad I found out about the update or I would be at the store next friday!
I'm buying the low end MBP, but I really hope that the update includes the penryn.

I have a question: What exactly can you do with the multitouch trackpad?

Also, Timewaister, if you've been accepted to college you can get the discount either by finding your school on the education version of the apple online store or by bringing in your acceptance letter to the store near you!

My Powerbook G4, 800 mhz - a testament to Apple that the darn thing has been completely functional for the past 6 years - that is until 2 weeks ago - died. Luckily I had 2 separate hard disk backups. Using Filemaker mainly, so talked work into installing the PC version on the Hewlett Packard at work (ugly son of a gun, but a Core 2 Duo, so I can't complain too much) and have been limping along without a laptop since then.

I want a new MacBook Pro as soon as possible. But I actually would consider waiting a month if they would do a real complete update with lower weight, magnetic latch, and in my view I'd be happy to trade the optical drive for a larger battery.

MacBot Air - anorexic robots

If that comes out in the next month, I'll be very happy. My new job is getting me a new MacBook Pro and I was hoping the Penryn model would come out to make it a bigger difference over my Core Duo entry level model MacBook Pro. The rest you mentioned are just added bonuses, but also what I'm expecting to see as well. Maybe they'll do a magnetic latch as well, one less moving part.
Yes, the magnetic latch would be a step in teh right direction. At least the current latch mechanism isn't as obtrusive as the ones you see built into PCs...Over the core duo, you should notice a performance boost, depending on the tasks. The new pros will be out by the end of february methinks...

I think the battery life on my current MBP is fantastic. To add to that, it recharges extremely quickly. An even better battery life in the next rev would be phenomenal.

Ya, thanks. i actually already heard about the educational discount but thanks anyways. :)
I do early college right now, so I'll just buy it through the University I'm at now.

As far as the multitouch pad
Take a look at the Macbook Air video on apple's website. It explains the multitouch keypad in it.

How about this theory..

I think the MBPs were pretty much ready to go at MacWorld, but Apple didn't want to steal the thunder - or sales - away from the MacBook Air, so they decided to wait a few weeks -

Figure the MBA is a "nice to have" while a new MBP (with Penryn, LED and magnetic latches) are more "needed" and would be more mouth-watering to the Mac faithful. I'm sure it would be easier for some people out there to justfy buying a MBA then a new MBP as opposed to the other way around.

Me, I'm still loving my PB 12" for portability - pretty much an email, browsing and playback machine...

And my 15" MBP (rev 2,2) is still an unbelievable laptop. I can see replacing it when the 4,2 MBPs come out...

I have it on good authority that this year's "Super"bowl will feature a commercial announcing the release of a "super" new macbook pro on "super" tuesday. This will also coincide with the 10.5.2 update. These MBPs are actually shipping quietly to stores alongside the MBA's.

Ah ... well we can dream, right?

I want them to bring out a new MBP not only so I can get rid of my old PB, but also so I can enjoy iLife 08!! I've put off upgrading to it for about 6 months thinking 'I'll get a new computer soon'.

Still can't get one...

Are you being serious? Who did you hear this from... another rumor? :D

However, the fact that you are still waiting implies patience. The impatient ones now own Santa Rosa MBPs. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it if I buy the 'rumored soon to be released' MBP, I will still own a Santa Rosa MBP? Except now, I will most probably get the newer chip (Penryn) as supposed to Merom?

According to MR:

"Despite hopes for an imminent release, it appears Mac OS X 10.5.2 is not yet ready for public consumption. Last week, Apple released a couple of seeds with "no known issues", but apparently has continued to work on the latest Leopard release."

So if the MBP refresh is being linked to the 10.5.2, what do you make of this?

why would they need to announce to MBPs with an OS update? An OS update is always nice, but hardly "announcement worthy" compared to new hardware. macinsider says there are a few more updates then just the penryn chip coming with this update, like an updated keyboard. I don't know... but I know one thing... I need to buy a laptop and I'm getting tired of waiting on rumors.

Well, if 10.5.2 has SSE4 instructions, and the new MBP will use Penryn, upon release using 10.5.1, benchmarks would be minimal at best. However with 10.5.2 making use of SSE4, speed gains could be significant.
