Why do you need a media reader? if it is a camera, then it'll appear and accessible through the device; if it is any other device, same story - why do you need it? its more frivilous crap that is unneeded and unwarranted.

A USB cable to hook up the camera is frivolous crap that is unneeded and unwarranted. I've seen an excellent Express Card reader, and my MBP will end up with one once released.

At the risk of rocking the Apple cart here...

I think Apple should do a re-design of the MacBook Pro line. Considering the rate at which component price drops occur, and the amount of time Apple obtains a maximum profit margin on their products, they can well-afford to redesign and re-engineer it with some extra stuff.

I'm all for keeping the on-board iSight camera, but Apple needs to get off their high-horse and put a *real* two-button touch pad in there, along with a tastefully-engineered media reader (why is this such a big deal with Apple anyhow?) and go with a higher-capacity battery, as it seems they might based on prior comments here.

Well, I have to agree with others that a major redesign would be around MWDC or later becasue it will be a big deal and will be big news.
I have to agree with you that the one touch mouse is anoying as I'm a previous PC user and there are still right click functions on a Mac. But its something apple's always done, possibly to retain their individuality, and I doubt they'll ever stray from it. It doesn't bother me too bad though because I mostly use my ibook as a desktop replacement and have a microsoft mouse hooked up to it. I think the new multitouch pad on the MBA or something similar to the mighty mouse where the click button can sense which side you press is the closests we'll get to a two button mouse. I wouldn't mind being wrong though...:)

As far as the battery goes...A bigger battery means more space which means a larger computer and then you start to get a size comparable to an average PC laptop. I doubt apple wants that...:apple:s

I'm new here! What does MWDC stand for and when is it?

I think he is just mixing MWSF: Mac World San Francisco (the conference and expo that just occurred on Jan. 15th) and WWDC (another Mac conference that happens in June). Thus getting MWDC (which does not exist). I think

Oops, ya sorry. :( WWDC. My bad.

You can already do right click on the MBP:
http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/design.html

"Right-Click Functionality: When you need right-click functionality, simply open “Keyboard and Mouse” in System Preferences and enable the secondary click preference."
Yeah, I find that putting two fingers on the trackpad and clicking is easier than having two buttons there. It took me one day to get used to it, and now I don;t even have to think about it.

New iphone but no new MBP

There you have it everyone. New iphones this week but no new MacBook Pros. You'll all have to wait another week.

Next week is a good day, it is pancake day in the rest of the world and far more important than football games or elections or birthdays even if it is the birthday of the Sultan of Brunei's dog.

... so what is the MacBook Air all about? Anybody worked it out yet?
;)

Apple... so I'll lay it out for you...

-My profession is predominately mac based.

-I need to get mobile with my work.

-My mac laptop options are either kind of fast but old technology from 2006 (mbp)
OR small screened slow low end laptops that are not functional for my software
OR an overpriced "thinnest laptop in the world" underpowered "just for show" laptop.

For the love of all that is holy... give me a high end fast laptop with technology that is available and exists today (e.g. Penryn). I don't want the old junk or the flashy slow stuff you have available today.

So just cause the CPU doesn't use the Penryn core you are calling the whole MBP old? When it was just updated to include the most recent chipset (mobo) and graphics. How odd.

this "just" you speak of is nearing a year old update (in June).

I don't deny that they are fast as is.. but I don't want to be one of those guys complaining about how they updated the MBP 2 days after I bought the existing one. The update is imminent and it's not smart to buy one now as is.

On the other hand I need one now, so you can see my concern for why they continue to come out with products other than an updated MBP.

And the only thing that has changed during that time is the CPU.

and even still its not going to be a day and night difference, sure progress is progress, but the changes will still be marginal in real world applications

In what way is it not working?

Its not working.

Its been like this for days. Doesn't work on any computer I've tried it on. The site is no longer there.

Ok people

Alright people, I'll agree with you that the current MBP is a fast machine and I would say it would work just fine for me. But it makes no sense to buy it now, when soon there will be one availabe with higher specs. To me its worth it to wait just to get the free extra hard drive space. I hope they'll also upgrade the graphics, add a magnetic latch, and get rid of the plastic edging. I want this laptop to last 3-4 years so it makes sense to buy the newest one to last the longest. Even if you need one NOW, I'd still try to work something out to wait. It'll be free upgrades. that's the point.

Upgrade the graphics to what? The 8600M GT is the fastest card you can get for the thermal requirements Apple has set. Only can do faster with a thicker laptop. I conceed the other stuff to you though...

Why MBP delay...

I can see two reasons for the MBP delay:

1) I'm guessing 10.5.2 is optimised to run the new Penryn routines - particularly SSE4 - to deliver a significant performance boost (up to 40% plus, with SSE4 optimisation - 14% without) and with the emphasis on better performance, it could caste the Air in an unfavourable light. This is probably why 10.5.2 is so big and why the MBA is being given a few weeks to be the best.

2) The rather large battery cycle numbers attached to the MBP 4,1 internet logs tell us there's probably something happening with battery performance too - Penryn's have a deeper sleep state when a single core is idle and have the potential to show marked battery performance boost under SSE4 optimised software. 6.4% Penryn performance boost = 16% increase in battery life, so a 40% SSE4 optimised boost should see rather more.

UPSHOT: don't expect the MBP until after 10.5.2 arrives. Expect significant performance and battery life boosts. Expect Apple's software to be SSE4 optimised rather quickly thereafter - notably Aperture 2, to deliver significant performance boosts for Penryn Mac Pro's and MBP's. This may have been the surprise announcement for professionals that didn't materialise at MWSF.

weird... the battery site isn't working any more.

Yeah, I noticed this too a few days ago. So maybe it was an official leak that Apple had to seal up? C'mon new MBP!

Well, they may be able to clock the 8600 up some more. But really, I want to see a 256mb standard and 512 upgrade for the graphics ram. :D

the newest laptop won't necessarily be the most durable or longest lasting.

yes, if you delay buying an equivalent laptop by a year it might finally die a year later than one bought a year earlier, but a MBP update isn't going to mean it suddenly becomes less likely to die within 4 years or purchase (or however long these things soldier on for).

if anything, it seems the newer products seem to have a shorter life. I've been through 3 televisions in 5 years - my parents only recently ditched a TV the same age as me (that'd be almost 30 years old!)

3 TV's in 5 years? thats pretty crap. I've got an el-cheapo RCA television which is around 5 years old - not a single problem.
