I've just read a few articles that mention the new trackpad on the 2016 MacBook Pro will allow the Apple Pencil to be used, this could be a very good idea for designers but I'm not sure how it would appeal to the majority. That's if the rumour is even true. I think the Pencil was designed for use with the iPad Pro and not the Mac.

Yeah, I doubt that very much. It would kill iPad Pro sales.

I've always operated computers using muscle memory, I don't look down at my hands. Changing the function controls to something that requires visual attention to me feels like a step back.
I'm not sure why this toolbar would necessarily preclude the use of "muscle memory"... ?? Once you've learned the representation used by a particular app, you're hands could go there without looking, just as they do now. Of course, the physical key provides a nice confirmation that you've reached correctly, which will (presumably) be missing, but it's still going to be a matter of certain functions appearing at certain places on the toolbar. Thus, still muscle-memorizable!

I hear it comes in kit form.

I wonder can this "magic toolbar" be used in word processing software like word etc. for predictive text. The different options would appear across the bar as you type. That would be very handy in my opinion.

that then raises the question of how long after you stop typing before it reverts from context sensitive to normal features, to let you change brightness volume control switch spaces etc which is what I normally use the F keys for

Could get really aggravating constantly having to wait for a timed revert (or switching app focus or pressing one end of the strip etc) to switch from context sensitive to normal features if you're in habit of making heavy use of some F keys

it's all good..exciting and interesting.
as long as they don't sacrifice functionality and neuter MBP just like that 12 incher,by eliminating the all important ports in the name of "courage".(I call it stupidity).
we will find out soon.

If the Magic Toolbar is fully programmable, how long will it be before we see Nyan Cat fly along it?

Bring on the complaints.
- You can see fingerprints.
- It drains the battery
- Icons not fully configurable.
- too expensive
- no new MacPro.
Got any more? :p

I expect the Mac Pro gone. If the mini goes , that would actually be very disappointing
If the MacPro goes. I go. That was it with the ecosystem. The only thing that will remain will be the Apple TV movies I bought. Music will be hosted by Spotify / amazon. New series Netflix/amazon.

I love Apple. I hate what it has become.

A magic new feature that distracts you and forces you to look at the keyboard. I don't think this is (and should be) for pro users. Programmers and other professionals used to blind type and frequently use function keys will hate this.

It will be sad, but I think it's a goner with the Mac Pro. It would also make sense that they discontinued all the desktops that need an external display, since they already killed off the old Thunderbolt display. I think the choice is going to be iMac or laptop moving forwards.
