I understand what you mean but I don't think you understand me...

1. iPhone is primarily - a) phone b) MSGing device c) email device d) gaming device and only perhaps then a browsing device... No one really expects to have some "browsing experience" using iPhone... Frankly its only good for quickly checking the news site or similar.

2. This fact is proven by stats as well only about 0.40% of entire web use out there comes from iPhone OS (that is iPhone and iPod Touch combined!)

Not even 1%

3. I am definitely in a market for small(ish) portable device that would allow me better web and email experience then for example netbook and when I heard about iPad I thought - this is it!

But apparently not so for obvious reasons... :s

Not sure about those numbers. Everything I have read says that most mobile internet browsing comes from iPhones which primarily why AT&T has such big network problems. I know I browse the Internet on my phone a lot. More than on my many mac laptops. Will be even more on my ipad. Not having flash has little effect on my life but that's because the sites I view don't use it.

It is annoying from time to time when I do need it such as when I wanted to view my wedding photos online from the photographers website but that should only happen once.

From what little I know flash is a source of crashes and bugs so I say to hell with it. But it's just me and we all have to make choices for ourselves. Hopefully revision 2 has something that meets your needs.

Best

However, the tablets running Windows 7 will be even more inexpensive and open to an even more massive audience of developers. Plus, they will not be crippled with a phone OS focused on "media consumption." Apple blew it by not putting OS X on the iPad.

I couldn't disagree more. For the umpteenth time, this is not intended to be a traditional tablet computer or a desktop replacement people! Tablet computers running Windows have been around for a few years, and they haven't done Jack Squat with software for them. This will truly be a game changing device in a whole different niche.

No different from the local supermarket, department store, bookstore, etc.

Or do you prefer the old communist regime method, only one brand of toothpaste in the store, and you have to wait in line because it's always out of stock.

No, the capitalist system where the corporations with the biggest advertising budgets are the most successful is much better.

Old fashioned competition in the App store looks like it will encourage lots of innovation at providing the best mobile multi-touch UI with which to access and use all those computers and services in the cloud.

The point was that the app store is not enough; you still need a means to research which apps to choose.

I know some users don't use their computers for long durations or don't use it for complex tasks so they'll enjoy the iPad. I meant that for the average/power user a tablet is a bad form-factor so Apple shouldn't refrain from providing a solution for most of its users.

Hmmm. "Most of its users"? Who do you think bought all those iPods? Hardcore Apple fans who already have Macs at home?

What are we doing here? Browsing Mac Rumors. When I do that on the couch downstairs, I don't need the equivalent of a Mac Pro underneath my fingertips.

And my biggest question of all: have all the people clamoring for a 'real' OS X tablet even looked at the Modbook by Axiotron? Why not? They base that on current hardware. It seems to work well and Apple more or less condones it. So if you're desperate, stop trying to make the iPad something it's not and buy a Modbook.

And let us know how you like it! :p

Well, the browser is not dead yet. Use it. And use magazines, blogs and all those other things.

And Apple should probably stand on Amazon's shoulders some more and adopt some of their rating systems (other users also bought, people ended up buying this, more sophisticated rating system, popularity indexes etcetera). :D

Never even heard of the modbook till today

And looking at it - it would have made the hockey puck mouse look like the iphone if they had launched that instead.

It would satisfy all the complaints - and sold in three figures at most.

The iPad is the computer without the technology.

It will bring millions more into the joys of the computer revolution with a machine you just turn on and off with a simple button.

I wish to add that Sweden has it depending on what you mean with fast and seamless :p
I read several places stating that Sweden is the country with most internet access in the world. We have loads of 3G modems and phones surfing over 3G. Even in northern Sweden out in the woods and hills you get some access :D

Go to former communist country Estonia. The entire country has wireless and every building in town is cat-5'd. Its free for all. No competing standards just wireless, 3G and networked buildings. Mobiles are house phones and everyone has one number. Average age of Parliament is 33.

Ahem... funny thing about this is it was mainly myself who was promoting this aspect of the iPad a month ago, specifically concerning the JazzMutant Lemur, in combatting the idiotic implications of some forum users who doubted that the iPad would have any uses at all. In the process I was banned temporarily, but no doubt this is how they noticed that I brought up the Lemur.

So thanks for the (kinda) shout out MacRumors!

LMAO exactly! :D

I am Mac user but this does NOT mean my mind, eyes, ears and all other forms of perception are shut to anything else but what Steve tells me...

For example, before it was even released - I already saw 2 competitor Tablet products that are way better than iPad...

I am sometimes ashamed of the fact that I belong to Apple user community - it often reminds me of some very dark, obscure, religious sect - which is not cool at all...

And what are these wonderful devices?

i dont know anything about developing games or anything, but it'd be cool if you could use the ipad for board games, like scrabble, and the players could use their iphone to hold their letters, etc.(if you could see the screen of the ipad from any angle), or just use it standing up and use it as the screen for a game instead of a tv(though being able to use a tv and have iphones as controllers would be more amazing).

iPhone-to-iPhone (and iPad) communication is allowed over Bluetooth. Technically, what you want is possible (to the best of my knowledge).

And like the Apple Remote app for iTunes shows, controlling another machine in realtime with the iPhone/iPad over WiFi is possible and feasible as well.

Like I said in another thread, I'd like to see an audio mixer app for FCP. Nice big sliders on the iPad screen.

Man, the market for holders and cradles and whatnot is going to explode!

As for implementing multi-touch on a Mac, it's very simple: imagine a MacBook with 2 multi-touch screens so that the 2nd screen replaces the keyboard and trackpad. You don't have to lift your hand to the main screen all the time since you have the bottom touch screen. For an occasional touch you can also use the top screen, just in case you really need to. That way you get the benefits of the tablet in the form-factor you're most comfortable with.

Wow. Incredible. What are you doing on this forum. Get out there and design such a computer. You be rich! or do you already work for Apple?

...for remote access to content, files and more, wireless broadband needs to be very fast and seamless. As of January 30 2010, no nation on Earth offers this. Not the USA, not England, nor even Japan.

Are you sure? Come and have a look at 3G coverage maps for Western Europe and eat your heart out :D - England is actually behind most of the others. In Belgium, Netherlands, France and most of the German speaking countries the 3G coverage is about 99% and in urban areas usually enabled for HSDPA (7.2 mbit). That's why open WiFi networks are not that common here.

You do realise that current iPhone/iTouch browsers represent only 0.64% of browser share, and most sites couldn't probably care less when they still have the other 99.36% to deal with?

Where did you come up with that made up number?

The iPad isn't meant to run photoshop, and the mistake people are making (at least I did) is that the iPad fills an existing traditional market (namely tablet pc's). The iPad's strengths is not it's power but is it's size/weight, and interface.

For me:
• I'd love to use it as a MIDI interface, or DJ rig
• play board games with the wife on trips
• simple sketch pad while roaming Home Depot

There are thousands of uses where the iPad could shine. And Apples decision to target developers and the app store will only reveal that much more innovation.

The future is the cloud, and increasingly better, advanced I/O's. The iPad, to me, is a step in that direction.

Hope they like being unemployed 5 years from now, cos no matter how many do 'shy away' the main thing is the SDK is free, so there will be a million bright open-minded super imaginative coders dreaming up incredible new ways to use this platform.

The one's with really cool ideas will end up being millionaires.

Plus some really big intelligent companies will be making some *incredible* software on this thing - true Star-trekkian mind blowing touch experiences.

So maybe it's a good thing, and kinda comforting to know that those 'stuck in the 90's' web designers won't be messing up the iPad with lack-lustre lazy ports!

You are talking about flash?

Flash is going to be obselete in a few years. It is the tool of amateurs and wannabe designers. Real web designers don't need to use flash to make good websites. In fact the amateurs that rely on flash actually make bad websites.

If you think the future of the web is flash, you are going to be really disappointed.

What is serious work?

For example, if I use Safari to log into my OWA account and send tasking requirements to 40 sites, would that not be considered serious work?

Or if I edit operating procedures using Pages, would that not be serious work?

Guess I am missing your point.

People who say things like "It won't be used for serious work" don't actually do serious work and have never done serious work. They just have imagined idea in their mind of what people who do serious work must be doing, and thus decide it won't be possible to do.

That is all fine and great for some...

However, Flash for others isn't just "web based video player" or FaceBook game machine...

Flash, in fact, is present in one form or the other on millions of web sites out there and is integral part of overall web experience - like it or not...

iPad, being advertised as best browsing experience ever, simply can not be that until Flash stops playing such an important part.

For example, I already mentioned this in one of previous threads, - I am in art, design and photography business. I deal with hundreds of clients working in this area and vast majority of them have Flash based sites!

Meaning, if I need to keep an eye on their latest work, I simply won't be able to do this due to the fact that Flash player isn't available for the system.

This fact alone instantly renders whole system for me useless...

It's awesome thing without doubt, it has massive potential but without supporting fundaments such as Flash player I simply have to skip it.

Can you imagine someone in situation of receiving urgent email from a client or partner saying "check this guys / girls work - here is a link" and you replying with "sorry I am using funky iPad I can't see the site since I have no Flash player installed"

I mean lol - I would stay out of business within a week using this...

I understand that there are number of people out there who can't get this point from whatever selfish reason - but this is fundamental issue that needs to be resolved first before I take a bite.

And I am sure I am not the only one!

People will be buying this device as their main portable web browser (between everything else ofc) and Apple is risking its reputation and sales tremendously here for not allowing OPTIONAL flash player installation (please note this OPTIONAL in capitals!)

By the way - I noticed few posts in here talking about how would Flash work on touch screen device.

Well here is little video that demonstrates this rather clearly:

http://theflashblog.com/?p=1666

By removing all the horrible flashed based websites they are IMPROVING the overall web browsing experience.

Just like what happened if someone would have blocked all the horrible geocity web pages whenever. It is addition by subtraction. Most flashed based web sites suck and create a worse experience. So you have the BEST experience of using the web when you eliminate all the crappy websites designed by second rate web developers.

I think everyone can forget about Flash. Apple's not going to budge on that one. Many sites are eschewing Flash, so it's on the decline anyway.

A camera will probably come in version 2. At least one USB port would be nice, and an SD Card slot would be perfect for importing photos. I won't hold my breath, though.

And why do you think this is? Perhaps:

1. It's a handheld, and....
2. It has 75 million circulating units, vs. 1.7 billion Internet users.

Conversely, the iPhone accounts for 65% of ALL mobile HTML web usage.

Get. A. Clue.

Fail...

The pad is an oversized ipod touch... with less functionality than an iphone 3gs (albeit a possibly faster processor). No camera, No hulu, no netflix....

NO WAY.

Not being able to watch hulu or netflix on the maxipad is not a feature... people deserve an option...

Do you own a laptop ?

you betcha... 17" MB pro, and an iphone 3gs (jailbroken, of course). I'd hackintosh a dell mini10v before I bought a pad without a camera and decent web support... and they are on sale now... less than $300...

macsales.com also has the axiom modbook, which is too expensive, but that offers a stylus and handwriting support.
