serves them right for stealing the windows ME logo

what did they expect?

how much you wanna bet no tech product ever has the word Me in its name again

Since I'm a long time IT guy myself (DBA), I would just LOVE to know what exactly went down here with the whole ME migration.

Heads will roll with this blunder.

It ain't just email that's broke...

Go over to the discussion forums and have a look at the MobileMe Account threads. The credit card renewal process is badly broken as is the renewal process with a store purchased activation. I've been trying for almost 10 days to enter my family pack code at the www.me.com/activate page but get nothing but "Error occurred" in response. Two emails to support have gone unanswered and my attempt to return the product to the online Applestore gets sandbagged even though the MobileMe support pages says to return the product to the store where you bought it to get your refund. They are telling me this is not possible as the activation code has to be cancelled first. What a load of hot @#$%^. All I want is my money back. MobileMe, for this user of 6 years, is a dead product for me now. Pity, it was working OK with my iPhone 3G...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)

I really feel bad for that 1% out there. Apple should give em whole year for free for making then go through this ordeal...

I second this! 30 days my ass, mine hasn't even shown up yet. 1 year free wont break their bank and it will certainly calm the mob.

MobileMe is really Exchange for the rest of us. Apple's new MobileMe slogan should be, "The reliability of exchange, now in Apple goodness.":)

Is there a credible third party sync app that syncs everything that .mac synced yet? Last time I looked there wasn't but this is the only feature I use Now sync itself is not always 100% stable but it works on the whole but I'd rather not pay out more for a service if another alternative offering the same exists at a lower price.

To achieve this reliability figure all you need is reliable RAID, daily backup of all data, and offsite backup on a near daily basis.

This is established technology and procedure.

If Apple is not doing that, they are overextended. One wonders if this could be solved by having a co-location agreement with Google, who has similar problems, if on a larger scale.

Your figure of 0.0001% means uptime of 99.9999% - no one achieves that.

Having RAID and a decent backup system is only a small part of what you need to achieve high availability - non interruptible power supply, full hardware and network redundancy, fallback sites and so on.

Again, expecting or trying to achieve a high level of availability for what is a budget web hosting service is just plain stupid.

I can tell they're fixing it...

Now scrolling through an email in the preview pane is smooth...not jaggy and laggy like before.

I'm having hard time with mobile me. Not only mail has hiccups every few hours but for whatever reason mobileme is deleting my contacts on the iphone. Already 3 times in last week. And thats annoying as hell!!! They are still on .me page and my mac but gone from phone. I'm gonna scream if it happens one more time......

There was a story going around that an Apple service rep said a fiber optic cable had been accidentally cut. I can't remember if it was here, AppleInsider or TUAW. Was that just BS? It would be nice to know if it is a hardware failure, a server configuration conflict, or if they have migrated to something written in-house that the gremlins are taking big bites out of.

Well I hope that it gets settled soon. Don't get me wrong. I love Apple and don't mind being called a fanboy or even a fanboi, but I am not getting good vibes from Apple lately.

1) I really doubt it's 1% that is affected. Everyone that I personally know that uses MM is having email issues, as well as other MM issues.

2) iPhone firmware is buggy and seems everyone is complaining of 3rd party apps crashing and every developer I have contacted blames the unexpected quits on Apple.

3) The AppStore is a fiasco. There are literally hundreds of developers that have updates to their already published AppStore apps just waiting to be green lighted. There is no telling how many developers are just waiting for their app to be green lighted for the first time.

4) Last but not least, no one can deny that Apple has taken the foot off the gas petal in the Mac department.

5) ( edit: ) How could I have forgotten the 30 minute syncs now with iPhone firmware 2.0 :(

It's painful to see the only tech company I love going through one horrible episode after another lately.

transition over five days ago? I'm sure mobileme launched before the 11th???

I'm one of those 1%. It's getting annoying - but - some of you are really painting the devil on the wall here. Sometimes it sounds like Apple is going down completely :D

well - hope they fix it soon!

My mail does work ( which I care less ) but not ical with my itouch ... I still need to plug in my device to update it every-time I make changes on my appointments

Saludos

since yesterday my emails ( i got 7 from .mac including family pack, extra emsils etc ) starting to ask for password on my iMacs and rejecting them when i enter it. Im sure its the correct passwords. Anyway, i tried to log into me.com and i got message again. i enter into password recovery ( clicking on forget password ), entered my email ( apple id ) but with @me.com and reset all my accounts passwords. this makes all them get back online again !

So reseting mail password into me.com using @me.com (after my apple ID), solved my issue.

Two things: Noone was talking about uptime, but risk. We are assuming here that data is actually lost, service is interrupted "long term" (which in most seirous environments means anything >24 hours). Keeping such "risk" low (in the 0.000x% range) is orders of magnitude cheaper (and easier) than keeping an uptime of 99.9999%.

In other words: I don't mind if there's a bit of downtime from time to time - if it hits 1% of users at a time, and is limited to a few hours, I'm not going to complain (or even notice, most likely).

For data safety, you use raid, backup and cross-site storage. For uptime, you use multiple servers (loadbalancing/failover), multiple sites and a quick-response team for handling issues as they arise.

Funny, though, with modern server hardware for web applications, redundant PSUs have become more expensive than simply throwing more servers at the problem.

A friend of mine has had no email since Friday. It's her primary email address - she, like me, migrated from .Mac.

Absolutely disgusting. Apple owe a big apology to the customers it has let down. I mean, for Pete's sake, she can't even load the Mail page on Me.com! It just does nothing!

Why does it take Apple so long to ackowledge this. If i was not a forum user, which a lot of mac users may not be, i would not know what is going on with my email. Poor management.

First rule of "IT organisations", dont make major releases for several products at the same time. Took me ages to register my upgraded iphone and then when i got that working my email goes. There better be some form of feedback on this and extention to my account as i am a paying customer. I must say this is the first time i have had any outage with .mac account. Six days and counting. It has taken me six monts to slowly move my usage over from gmail to .mac, but i am so glad i still use my gmail. The only problem i have right now, is that i have outstanding emails that need actioning. Welcome to the real world Apple, major companies need major backup plans. I also ge tthe feeling this impact is on more european users.

maybe over the pond in USA, the government are using it as a chance to check in to our new Chineese .mac followers lol. Whats the betting the next time i open my.mac account i get " mobileme would like to use your location" : )
