Nope, you can chose to only use apps downloaded from the Mac Appstore, if you chose to have it that way, others which like to go somewhere else will have no problem to do so.

Apple could easily implement a setting in iOS, standard would be the Appstore, give a warning if you toggle that setting, for instance, warn users that it might affect security.
What if I need an app for work or for a piece of other tech I buy? Please tell how this will have a benefit for the consumer? I honestly get the benefit to consumers but why do consumers want this so bad

I wonder if Zuckerberg is just realizing that now !

There are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of UN-Discovered Gem Apps in the iOS App Store that have NOT yet had their Day in the Sun !

Get in line Zuckerberg !

not at all, Windows had near absolute dominance in the computer market, Apple doesn’t even have dominance in the phone market let alone the entire computer market, consumer choice exists, you want an open market go android, you want a close market go iOS, you want a pc buy one, you want a powerful game console buy one, it’s not nearly the same.

I own an iPhone and apparently I have a license to use iOS. As a consumer with choice to do what I want with my property I would like to not use iOS and the App Store. Does my choice exist?

Maybe Apple should block the FB app all together because it spies on people, waists their time, is primarily used to spread unfounded conspiracy theories and drains their phone batteries because it does everything to keep running in the background?
You do realize Facebook is one of the top 10 free apps downloaded on iOS? Along with Messenger and Instagram (and I’m sure WhatsApp outside the US).
Facebook charges monopoly rents to use their platform, only the payments aren't in cold hard cash but personal information that they can and will exploit/misuse.
Isn’t that because the public has made it pretty clear they want things for free? Any time a website puts up a paywall people get mad. I mean why do you think over 80% of the apps in the App Store are free?

Please. Facebook doesn’t care about the cut. It’s not how they make money. Epic cares, Facebook does not.

This is Facebook bringing the war to Apple because of Apple limiting their spying on users.

If I were at Apple, I’d make iOS 15 a fatal blow to these spyware companies.

So lets just make iOS like windows and MacOS? Let takeaway our current option of having an all in one ecosystem and turn iOS into a PC OS how does that benefit the consumer?

Apple keeps things outside of its ecosystem that the customer might find useful or enjoy (xcloud for example).

I do enjoy having an all in one ecosystem because it’s useful to me to only have to manage one account but under Apple I find the word ‘option’ a bit of a puzzle given how controlling they are. It would be a shame to lose global features like the ability for in-app purchases to be restricted but Apple are so rigidly stubborn the decision to change the platform may be made for them.

Apple does more to “protect” users than other app stores. There are always stories about apps on the play store being pulled because of malware that can hijack your phone. Now Apple aren’t prefect in this regard a couple still slip through but it’s rare compared to the play store which happens all the time.

Let’s face it most smart phone users nowadays are complete tech illiterate morons and need the extra “protection” that Apple and the locked down ecosystem that iOS provides.

Are Apple perfect? Far from it, but I’d rather my family and I be in the walled garden than in the Wild West that is Android.

Except that Android isn’t the Wild West. If you only get apps from the Play store, it’s not much different from the App Store. Just because the option to install from other sources exists, that doesn’t mean you have to do so. This is exactly how MacOS works today and there’s no security crisis on the Mac.

Yeah buy an Android phone.

You knew what you were buying into when you purchased an iPhone.

Also try and install another OS on a modern Android phone and you’ll find it either can’t be done or it is so broken it’s pointless to try because of locked down bootloaders.

You buy the device that fits your need from a company you trust, for me that’s Apple and iOS because of it’s locked down secure nature and regular updates that improve the product with new features each year. I would never buy a Samsung out of my own pocket after being forced to use one for work, nice hardware but how Samsung mutilates Android and tries to force their own crap apps on you, and lack of updates to Android I don’t like so I won’t buy one.

No that right doesn't exist and it didn't exist when you made the decision to purchase an iPhone. This isn't new iPhone / iOS has been this way since day one. You should research your purchases better in the future

Except the play store doesn’t have Apple’s level of security hence all the malware apps you see stories about.

A shorter Zuckerberg:

You should care a lot about how rents get split up between FB and AAPL. Which, given his audience (FB employees with significant RSU grants), makes sense.

ahh, so you talk about your choices and mine don’t count. I may have known the limits of my iPhone when I bought it, but perhaps millions don’t. Wonder what happens when kids get their new iPhones tomorrow and no Fortnite? Or folks pick up an iPad and no xcloud or stadia?

Lol. Suckerberg... you do know that while Fakebook may not stifle innovation it does stifle morality, sanity, intelligence and common sense? It's the single largest source of hoax/sham news on the planet. What a joke of a company and site.

I to would like Xcloud on my iPhone but I also feel that apple are in a very awkward position with this one, Im sure apple know Microsoft will run this service extremely well and its users will be safe and treated fairly and all games on the service will be of a very high standard. The issue is do they now have to let all game streaming services in the App Store and then how does apple ensure these companies run their service in the same high standard Microsoft will. If the games are of a poor standard or highly inappropriate with no parental controls to protect peoples children iPhone users who download this gaming service will be blaming apple and holding them responsible. The headline will be children playing inappropriate games on APPLE iPHONES.

You need to remember able has built up a highly respected reputation based on its quality, security and parental controls and they have done this via close control of their ecosystem, if they start releasing this control they risk huge damage to their fine reputation that has taken so long to build. It has been shown over the last few weeks how desperate people are to knock apple down and these people would go to town on apple if my example above came true

Then it’s up to the parents to look into the choices out there and for the shops to inform them, that’s what the sales people are paid to do.

It’s like buying a Nintendo Switch and expecting it to run Halo, or buying an Xbox for Mario some parents won’t know the difference when buying the system.

Not an issue apple over a no questions asked 14 days return, if people cant get the apps they suspect they can return their apple product for a full refund and go buy an android

2.2 MILLION apps on the App Store.

Yeah. Look at all that stifled innovation. 🙄

Your missing a key point in all this Epic for example want their own store and not to put their app on the Apple or Google store. When Epic wanted you to sidled on android, they didn't put their app on the google store. This might not seem a big deal but once epic has a store everyone wants their own store. Who will police these stores? When a dodgy store uploads a dodgy app and peoples iPhones and Android phones get hacked or data get gets stolen, these people wont be blaming the App Store they got the app they will be blaming Apple and Google. The headlines will read iOS /Android is hack or iOS / Android leaks users data

it does, if you want to install another OS on your physical hardware I fully support your right to do that (provided there is no IP issues), if you use iOS I support Apples right to make the rules, we don’t live in a world of unlimited choiceS, I’d like so shop on Amazon.com with the freedom to pay direct without paying amazon but that isn’t possible. I’d like to buy a PlayStation game without paying Sony any royalties but I can’t.

Just a thought, will Epic allow other developers on their App Store? If so at what markup? And not to get all inception on this but would epic allow another App Store within their AppStore that they expect Apple to administer within the AppStore ? Just saying.
