Neat. Get programmers to add better privacy invading features and maintain plausible deniability while doing it. Facebook users don't seem to be too concerned about privacy invasion, so I'm sure they believe these pack of lies.

Its not a bug, it's a feature...
Well, clearly they said it was an issue and made specific changes to deal with it, so certainly seems like they treated it as a bug rather than a feature.

What privacy invading features were in play here?

Nope.

I've downloaded the new update and the app is still draining at 39%.

By far the worse performing app for battery life

Gotta be the battery use info related prior to updaing. I've noticed my on screen time is now much higher than background use after the update.

The secondary audio app issue is pervasive amongst all apps.
Need to close for volume to normalise.
Apple.com/feedback people.

You haven't met Snapchat then....

A little too soon to jumping to this conclusion. They just released the update today. There's no way of knowing the battery stats for at least 24 hours since iOS battery stats are rolling 24 hour period or rolling 7 day period...

im sick with this... update without notes.. apple should impose strict compliance to post update notes.
They could still easily post something like this even with such a requirement:
- Fixed some bugs.
- Improved performance.
- Increased stability.
And have that pretty much for most updates.

Great. Don't forget that they also paid something like 19b for WhatsApp and they still haven't updated it in a major way. Still no quick replies, still no watch app. Still running in the background eating battery away. Frankly, they suck. I don't use WhatsApp much more than I use Messages, and WhatsApp has like 4 hours in the background while Messages has only a few minutes.

While the latest Facebook app release notes don't include a reference to the issue...

Of course they don't. They never do. Their release notes for a long time now have been something meaningless like "We update this app every two weeks whether we need to or not and always include bug fixes but won't tell you here what else we changed." They've also apparently taken to a Chrome-esque versioning system with the newest update being 42.0. Messenger seems to have taken the same fate, though version 45.0 (also released today) doesn't include the generic text and at least pretends to include a changelog.

Funny how they release an update every other week no matter what that usually has nothing new at all except a message about how much they care about customer experience but yet they don't find a major "bug" with their software that drains battery.
So with this background audio issue being fixed does this mean it fixes when you close then Facebook app and play music the audio won't be lower than normal anymore? It used to happen all the time when I had my phone connected to my car Bluetooth.
Wow this was driving me crazy, I always thought it was an iOS issue. How can such a large company who should have the best developers in the world not notice an issue like this? Doesn't make any sense...

Still don't trust it. It is not a bug but intentionally running in the background even when I switched off background refresh and location services. It is spying on users.

If it was a chinese apps that run in the background, collecting data, even background refrsh off.. and keep using location service,, then it is a malware.

Good riddance. 15 mins usage only and who knows how many 10s of hours in background spinning for my data, it sucked up more than any other app on my phone.

When the Facebook battery draining issue first began circulating, MacStories' Federico Vittici hypothesized it was caused by silent audio running in the background, which turned out to be correct. Vittici believed Facebook used silent audio intentionally as a way to keep the app active in the background for tasks like pre-loading content, which he said showed "a deep lack of respect for iOS users."

Personally, I find this irresponsible journalism. This doesn't pass the smell test. This type of journalism is designed to mislead the readers to draw page views and advertising revenue. A less obvious form of click-bait.

If Facebook was doing something nefarious, knowingly and on purpose, why would they bother to shut off this functionality? If it was worth doing covertly in the first place, it is most certainly worth keeping around. If it was an unintentional bug, then it is easy to fix and mitigate - which is what they are doing. I think everyone needs to calm down and approach this from a rational perspective.
