I could see Apple adding a few features to the SDK to see this kind of thing become possible...

Lock screen widgets + home screen widgets + some kind of quick notification response window and you've replicated most of Facebook Home.

Did Apple initiate this or did Facebook? Because Apple knows it can't miss out on Facebook Home to Android.

Gosh, how many of you have actually used Facebook Home? "I saw a YouTube video once" simply doesn't count. The fact that it's on Android appears to be the biggest problem in this thread.

Anyway, I installed it on my S3 yesterday, and it's pretty cool. I'm not a big user of Facebook - I mean that, I haven't set a status for over a year now - but I like to get involved with it. It's a very nice Lockscreen - the app tray admittedly leaves much to be desired.

ChatHeads are absolutely undeniably useful, and dare I say it, somewhat innovative. Sure, quick reply SMS hacks have been around for years - but nothing as refined as this. I've changed my default SMS app to Facebook Messenger - something iOS doesn't allow for - and it works great. All my contacts have photos, thanks to OS X, so I'm ticking over nicely here. Multi-tasking, great looking messaging - Facebook messages and SMS in one app too.

Those of you slating it should consider the "choice" option that has previously been argued in this thread. Sure, it might not be for you, but for up to 1 billion others (# active Facebook users) - it might well be. For the majority of consumers, the option to have high-quality, interactive images of their friends (in real-time) on their Lockscreen/Homescreen is going to be tempting. Apple are going to want to counter that temptation.

PS. For those of you saying it's all about Facebook...it's definitely not. The only Facebook thing is your interactive background - the rest works as a standard Launcher, with some extra data tracking going on. You can even have your regular Lockscreen if you want, using Home as the unlocked Homescreen.

Underneath all that, Facebook is collecting data from you everywhere you go. You probably ticked terms and conditions that secretly send over your locations data, your app activity on your phone and who knows what else. It's not hard to do at all if they get access to the OS. Essentially it's a big gimmick for facebook to take over your life, stay in consumers' mind, collect user data so that they can sell that to advertisers. What happens when they implement a new feature later that shows ads? Oh look ads on your home screen.

There's also an expectation now from users and other devs for Apple to accept changes to the main OS. Which means you could have integration problems with other apps and who knows what else.

"But Mr. Cook, look at how beautifully crafted this wooden horse is! Wouldn't it look magnificent on the Apple campus?"

Nothing. The problem is that with map applications, UI is a secondary thing. Without good map data UI is irrelevant.

so why relate maps to FB UI in the first place? Don't answer btw. Just giving you a question to ask yourself.

----------

You chose Apple and you know they don't give you any choice with what is installed with iOS.

If you want that CHOICE then go to Android.

----------

Then hide them from your page. Unlike Apple, Macrumors gives you the choice.

Well since you assume so much cool but guess what, I have the first gen iPhone before Android was even really heard of. I much prefer iOS to android too and not for choice reasons. You act as if choice is the only reason to choose an OS, spoken like a true anti Apple. Don't reply btw, I can't reason with ignorant people.

Wow. You got all of that from...

I must get your Facebook page so I can consult you for my future choices.

It is the fad at the moment to bash maps for everything just like this guy is doing, surprised I need to explain that to you.

I will in the market for a new phone soon since my one is a dinosaur (first gen iPhone). Just waiting on iOS7 to see how it is, if FB is heavily integrated the Sony Xperia will be an easy choice lol

how about Apple expand this SDK to allow apps to do this instead of making deals with individual companies.

that way we can elect to not install this crap on our phones if we don't want it.

But a home screen, although certainly an app in itself, is really part of the OS I don't see why they would ever allow that, or facebook home for that matter.

If this happens I think I will have to go back to candy-bar Nokia phones. Sometimes I miss their simplicity.

I hope this is a joke. If this happens they won't make you use it. Nokia is awful and does nothing. Just saying.

Nope.
No.
No way.
NO!
NEVER!
No. No. No.
Absolutely retarded.
No.
GTFO.
Nope.
Die.

Unless, of course, it's optional. If that's the case, I don't really care. Besides, I have very high doubts Apple will do this anyway.
