Says the guy on an internet forum. :D

Haha very true. :D Well at least MR doesn't require me to go through FB to make posts. Honestly Zuckerburg was trying to suggest that there is something wrong with using Apps on our phones. Apps work just fine, he's just trying to create an extension of what we already have working great and he's calling it new. The nonsense in the Facebook HOME reminds me of Windows 8. More complicated fluff, no substance.

Wow you haters

iOS doesn't even have a home screen!!!

How can you hate ?!

Jesus Christ - what is wrong with this forum

Sigh, the Home screen on FB is really unnecessary. Tell me what's the major features about it that you really NEED? I saw nothing during the keynote stream.

I can't believe they have relegated 'phone calls' to just an inconsequential app as if it was the last thing you'd ever want to do on a phone....

The problem is, that joining Facebook may become less and less of a voluntary "choice". If a smartphone is released with this monstrosity as the default setup, then I'm sure you are prompted to create an account to access the most basic functions of the device. How soon before its on the majority of devices by default?

Facebook is trying to make itself the *only* way to communicate with your friends and share stuff with them. Anyone without an account misses out on invitations, pictures, etc. Not even Google can create anything even remotely close in popularity--they are a monopoly.

So are you saying Facebook needs to work on being less successful? Its still absolutely up to you whether you want a Facebook account. Its not their fault if you don't get an invite or a message.

Also, as others have said, this is a launcher. If you dont like it, change it, that's the beauty of android being open. Its really not the problem people are making it out to be.

u wouldnt have to unlock the phone, start looking for the stupid app which then has to refresh before i can FINALLY see my updates.

a missing home screen is what pissed me off on the iPhone since my iPhone 3G back in the day.

praying iOS7 finally changes this

your most important infos should be accessible anywhere without opening a stupid app first

The best thing about it is that it's an OPTION. An option we on iOS would never get. So for all who think it's ugly or stupid or invasive, you simply don't install it. But it sure would be nice to have the option to.

this is the exact opposite of how i have my fb set up.

i disabled all my friends news stories.

if i want to see what was going on in a friends life i have to go to their timeline.

all the links, status updates and photos are a complete sensory overkill in my opinion.

i can't imagine seeing silly pics and "crazy" status updates whenever i touch my phone...oh well, some might like this.

More crap from Mark Sugarloaf? Hell NO.
"sugarloaf"? Zucker = Sugar...Berg = Mountain, Hill, Alp

Sorry, just had to correct this one.

If you have a teenage daughter who spends so much time on Facebook that she needs a phone UI layer dedicated to such a thing, you have bigger problems as a parent.

My comment was more along the lines of "I'm not the target audience for this, but I probably know who is."

But yes, by all means. Take this opportunity to insult my parenting skills.

I don't want this. The only reason I keep my FB account is so I can see what friends that live across the country (and world I guess) are up to. Even then, it's really beginning to irritate the hell out of me. I don't understand why anyone would think this is a good idea. An app to check in if you're bored is one thing, but NO WAY do I want it to be front and center in my phone's OS.

I think the quote was "...teenage daughter would love this". How is it a parental problem that a teenager would want more facebook? I am not quite sure how you made the gigantic leap from teen would love to needs a dedicated UI layer. That was pretty impressive and presumptive.

Kids/teens tend to like FB. Why wouldn't they love it?

Apple could easily achieve something like this in iOS 7. Just have a setting that automatically brings you to whatever app you choose when you unlock your device. Add thumb print scan to that, boom, done.

didn't see the event, is this like a launcher or just an extra home screen (like a big widget) im not so sure??

These first few responses certainly tell the tale of Apple disciples. No room for discussion, no intelligent dialog about preferences and ideas. Nothing but negative responses.

Me?

I cannot comment as I have never used Facebook, nor do I have the slightest interest in what appears to be a massive time sink.

However I don't need to "hate it" or slam Zuck for making an attempt at improving his product.

I happen to enjoy the free enterprise environment.

What is wrong with my response? I made an observation based on the article and pictures. Not everything needs an insightful analysis.

Fragmentation is not really about what the X device can do that the Y device cannot. It's about devices sharing the same operating system but still look different, behaving different, offering an overall different experience to the user. Even if you are able to make device X - with some effort - look exactly as device Y when out-of-the-box, that's still fragmentation.

Google licenses android to any phone manufacturer pays for it, no questions asked, no real standards enforced. Therefor you'll find a big variety of h/w, varying from awful to high quality. But still, they are sharing the same applications, meaning these applications look different and behaving slightly different to each device. Now, that's the definition of fragmentation.

No handset maker pays to use Android.
