So ... Just like email, except with less assumption of privacy?

email? what is THAT?

i like it tho i modtly use WhatsApp. whos gonna sue next? :p

@ a few of you...

This is Facebook's attempt to take on all of the other chat programs out there.

Some people use Facebook Messaging the same way Blackberry users use BBM.

Think about it... instead of convincing all your friends to start using some other chat platform... you can continue to use Facebook where your friends are already.

But this way... a separate app gets you to your messages faster... avoiding all of the other distractions of Facebook.

They need to work on their timing - Blackberry Messenger is in the news because it's being used to coordinate the London riots, not really sure that's the best time to launch a competitor.

mmmh me gusta, didnt go over my old school sms limit in months tx to fb and whatsapp

this BS is not needed..

Between my texts, what's app, Skype and my MSN, I have enough messenger apps already..
Not including iMessages when it comes out.. so this thins is useless..

Can apple streamline all your msgs from different messenger apps in one area so I can just read all my msgs and respond to the right one without even bothering to care or know if it came through txt or IM..
I'm just tired of going through multiple apps to talk to people..
just complaining.

woah they released a facebook app im so happy !im just kidding.Like others said they could have use this time to fix the terrible bugs that the app has instead of posting new facebook apps, you know it's not that hard to fix them

Genius move by Facebook. RIP BBM

While I, like many others would have hoped for Facebook to fix their app, I get why Facebook is doing this.

Blackberry users rave about BBM but iPhone users can never get in on the fun. RIM would never share BBM with any other platform because it's one of their biggest selling points. It's why many people still get Blackberry's!

So now Facebook comes in and gives all smartphone users a standalone messaging app with all their built in contacts, already signed up! RIP BBM

This also seems to be part of new app strategy for Facebook. A while back, a Facebook photo/camera app was leaked. It was meant to compete with the likes of Instagram and other camera apps. Facebook after all is the biggest photo network in the world, bigger now than Flickr.

It's totally possible that Facebook is planning to break up its functions into one touch accessible purpose built apps, visible right on your iPhone's home screen.

The next step would be to release a Twitter-like app for status' and newsfeed, where you can also access Profiles and walls. These 3 apps together would make up all the functions of Facebook without trying to do too much in one app.

u cleary never used WhatsApp

I'll stick with Beejive IM, which allows me to talk to contacts on Facebook, MSN, GTalk, AIM, Yahoo, etc. Pretty sure Beejive also has a free app just for Facebook chat. I have a feeling the free Beejive one will still be better than the Facebook one, if it's anything like the normal Facebook app.

They better be introducing video calling to their Facebook chat app. Only decent feature I see is group messaging. Still, I see no reason why it'd have to be a separate app. I'd rather have to use 2 taps to get to it than have 2 different Facebook apps.

not amused...

So this is what Facebook has been doing rather than fixing the bugs in their current app? Thank the lord i'm not an investor! For their sake at least...

You clearly don't realize how much bigger Facebook is than Whatsapp. I used it but struggled to get anybody to join. Facebook on the other hand.... all my friends and clients are already there. A BBM replacement app won't work unless people join. A dedicated chat app with a built in full list of your contacts will.
