Just yesterday, Jordon, the author of this post, answered someone else's post about why new app releases were now showing up nearly daily on MacRumors. He stated that the app releases are always on the blog [page 2] pages, and not on the front page. So why is Facebook's new iOS app not in the iOS blog but on the front page?
I never said app releases were always on the blog. I said that things on the blog were a bonus compared to what was on the front page. Facebook has hundreds of millions of users. Just about anything they do is major news, especially as Facebook continues to be one of the most downloaded iPhone apps.

Equivalent to the BlackBerry Messenger service?

It's news, so what's the problem? if you're really that hurt over some news being posted up on the internet, I'd highly suggest not reading MR news.

SMS integration??

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

I did press skip and was unimpressed. Weren't you?

It's not in Australia App Store yet, but correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the killer feature the fact that you can integrate with SMS network (off website:"Not using a smart phone? You can still reply to messages sent using Messenger by confirming your mobile number.")
So by skipping this process you have made it very ho-hum app, and thus curiosity is wasted on you...

FB is way too late to FB chat app party. I bought Beejive along time ago...

Back online

I tried to look for it at the US store without success... Maybe they took it down for some reason. (Tried my search with Facebook, and Facebook, Inc. as well).
Application back online on App Store. I actually liked it.

Even AOL is still around many years later - but who cares.

Being around and being "it" aren't the same.

Facebook will still be "it" for a long time.

There is finally some competition in that space, though. Will Google+ steal the crown? Maybe... if you can convince enough people why Google+ is "better" than Facebook.

Hell... GMail still isn't the largest email provider... and we love GMail.

Even if half my friends switch to Google+ (which may take years... if ever).... I'm still gonna have to check Facebook for the rest of them.

Will enough of Facebook's users stop using Facebook and switch to a competing service? Doubtful.

Remember... this isn't like the jump from MySpace to Facebook. MySpace sucked and Facebook was clearly better.

However... the jump from Facebook to Google+ won't be obvious to most people.

It CAN send an SMS to a non FB user, for free. I use GV to send free sms.

It CAN'T send an SMS from the USA to Ireland, so I assume it's USA-only for SMS. Eventually I 'll use iMessage for that as many of the people I'd text overseas have iOS devices.

It CAN'T include a photo in an SMS sent in the USA. At least it didn't work for me. I'm surprised GV hasn't added this feature yet.

I'm an extremely light FB user, so I won't get much out of this. But I suppose it's better than nothing.

it's not available everywhere. macrumors is for everybody? we non americans are usually happy if limitations like this is noted.
all this is again related to the fact that [how many] of your articles are about at&t vs verizone, etc etc.
who outside the us could care less??
end of rant

Well.....I don't know about u guys but I know way more people with Facebook accts than I do with iPhone. The fact that the majority of the smartphone world owns either an iPhone or android phone, this facebook message app just might be major.

What's with the hate? This thing is sending SMS for free. Hell yeah. I
Often go over my SMS limit and pay through the nose. This will help. And Facebook sucks but I'll take the freebie.

I don't understand. The iPhone Facebook app already has messaging built it, with notifications, so why a separate app?

I didn't read past the first page of the thread so maybe I missed something.

*edit*

I do have beluga because my GF can message me from the browser of her laptop without going to her phone. I know FB bought beluga, is this what they have done with it? In the pics for the app, there is a picture of a beluga whale as a nod to the app, and when you search beluga, the Facebook chat app is second result. But why a new separate app outside of beluga and not just Facebook integration?

I have been asking the same thing, I can't find the difference with this app or the built in messages section in the Facebook app

Also, I don't see a universal app in the canadian app store for this. It just shows up in iPhone apps, with no + indicating universal

I wonder if Facebook will email my conversations from the app like they do (the entire thread) every time someone responds on the main site?

Facebook chat sucks. I'm glad they cut that awful new side bar.

Way to redefine "awesome" again Facebook.

Is this universal for anyone? Cause it loads as an iPhone app on my iPad. No native resolution.

It's not a universal app!!! Correct the article plz!!!

Yes, the title of this article is misleading. "Messenger App for iPhone and iPad" only in the loosest sense. It's an iPhone app, period. iPad will let you use it the way it lets you use all iPhone apps. Pixelated.

It's not the article's fault, Facebook listed it as universal when they submitted it to Apple.

MacRumors isn't wrong, I'm almost positive that iTunes lists the app as "Universal"... I can absolutely confirm that it isn't. That's why I was so confused when I went to run it and it's a shadow of what it should be on my iPad. Why does Faceberg hate the iPad so much?

Decent Messenger

I don't know why so many people are complaining about this app. If they don't like it/don't want it/hate it for no apparent reason other than their personal preferences, fine - why bash the people who will find good uses for this app?

My wife and I got rid of SMS a couple months ago through Verizon and have been using TextFree to save money. It's been good for our finances but annoying because the servers go down half the time. With this app, we can text anybody that we want to, whether or not they use Facebook. I've already tried it on a couple of people that I know do not have Facebook, and it has worked perfectly. This will be a great way to message with people for free for a while, at least until iMessages comes out. Once iMessages is released, we'll probably use that with most of our family, since nearly all of my siblings and relatives and plenty of my friends have iPhones.

I have no use for it. In all seriousness, none of my adult male friends use it. Just sayin'.

I like how people think it's cool to put down others because they are on Facebook. I can almost bet you and/or some of your male friends have a Facebook

Tried it... rotated iPhone to type a message, keyboard didn't rotate to landscape mode, deleted.

BeejiveIM anyway for AIM/AIM->SMS/MSN/FB chat.

I didn't put anyone down. And no, none of us use it. I didn't say it because it's not true.

All the high school kids I teach use it. And most of my friends' wives and girlfriends use it (although they all claim it's idiotic). But no, the most prized demographic is not using it.
