This app isn't completely necessary, as some have so bluntly pointed out, but it's by no means a horrible thing. I've experienced several issues with FB chat from the official Facebook iPhone app, so maybe this will bring closure to those problems for me.

In a world where games like Tiny Wings, Angry Birds, and Cut the Rope are among the most purchased games ever, we shouldn't be going after applications like this. Applications are rarely created for necessity anymore.

This is great and all, but forces you to have a facebook account, also if the Facebook App is of any resemblance to this one, it'll be riddled with bugs. I also believe there are way too many data messaging options at the moment, such as WhatsApp, BBM, LiveProfile and many others, unfortunately they don't work with each other so everyone has a different one and this will just further add to the confusion. It would be way easier if everyone used just one working app, I personally use WhatsApp here in Spain and everyone knows about it but whenever I move say to the US no one knows what it is :/

Why isn't this on the iOS blog?

Just yesterday, Jordon, the author of this post, answered someone else's post about why new app releases were now showing up nearly daily on MacRumors. He stated that the app releases are always on the blog [page 2] pages, and not on the front page. So why is Facebook's new iOS app not in the iOS blog but on the front page?

I need Google Talk iOS App!

Now if Google would just write an iOS app maybe I could keep in touch with my Google Apps (Google Talk text chat/IM) contacts at work... webapps don't always suffice!

Still waiting for Facebook to die and Google+ to take its place. Remember that one week where everyone signed up for Google+..... then everyone forgot about it?

I'll stick with Beejive IM, which allows me to talk to contacts on Facebook, MSN, GTalk, AIM, Yahoo, etc. Pretty sure Beejive also has a free app just for Facebook chat. I have a feeling the free Beejive one will still be better than the Facebook one, if it's anything like the normal Facebook app.

They better be introducing video calling to their Facebook chat app. Only decent feature I see is group messaging. Still, I see no reason why it'd have to be a separate app. I'd rather have to use 2 taps to get to it than have 2 different Facebook apps.

I'm also sticking with Beejive as i have all my IM's in the 1 app, keeps me signed in for 7 days and is way more reliable than FB chat.

If you mean keeping in touch through text chat, Beejive works for me (also has Facebook chat, MSN, Yahoo, AIM, etc.), though it's pricey. As for voice chat, not really sure of any apps that do that with Google Talk.

I see where Facebook is going with this. There are are more Facebook users than there will be iMessage users, and with this going to Android, and going pretty strong in notifications for dumb phones, this standalone app is already more invasive than i thought. With iOS 5 notifications, this will be oh so sweet.

Meh, this isn't 'news'. FB will soon die off, another fad people tire of, to move to pastures new.

Next story...

this makes it easier for people with android devices to chat/ communicate. as the FB app for Android has really had a chat feature before.

I would have preferred it if they had improved the original Facebook app which is horribly bugged and slow. But i suppose I'll check it out and see how this app runs. You can't get much worse than the current Facebook chat anyway.

I just downloaded this, because I was curious.

The first thing it asked me is if I want to add my cell phone number to Facebook.

No thanks. I removed it immediately. I don't need my Facebook friends to be able to one-click call me over Facebook.

And I share everyone else's sentiment about a major overhaul of the current Facebook app. It's getting dated and annoying. Especially the recent update that changed the "via Facebook for iPhone" to "via Facebook Mobile". Now all my friends will forget how much cooler I am for having an iPhone and not a WhackBerry.

False Advertising

You guys should really change the text of the article. I just went to download it on my iPad and it is just an iPhone sized app that can work on the iPad. Whats the point? Wake up Zuckerberg and give us an HD version of Facebook and this messenger app, unless that is too hard for you to come up with....

Did it ask for you to also share your SSN too?

Haven't you seen The Social Network? You need to get that kid distraught over a girl for him to do anything drastic...

Isn't that close enough?

The reason iPhone now posts as 'via Facebook mobile' is due to the programmers changing the app so it's mostly just running the FB touch site (http://touch.facebook.com) within the app, as opposed to what it did previously. Which sucks.

If you had pressed on "Skip" you could have explored your curiosity a little more.

I did press skip and was unimpressed. Weren't you?
