Just no. Even not counting Suckerberg’s spyware crap it’s not even capable of sending texts to phone numbers.

To me this reads as they also want to handle SMS/texts as the default app. And the problem I have with that is it means even if I don’t use it, Facebook will have the ability to learn more about me if anyone who texts me does use it. And their privacy record sucks. Consider that they got pissed at apple’s privacy protections because it cuts into their ad revenue. Or the time the removed people’s ability to keep what groups they were in private without real notice and ended up outing a bunch of people to their families.

I wasn’t even thinking about the angle you point out- it would surrender my personal privacy preferences to my friends if they chose to use the FB Messenger app for our SMS exchanges. That probably eventually leads down the path of people wanting to opt out of SMS all together out of privacy concerns, sticking with whichever platform/service they feel comfortable with. Thanks for the feedback.

Once you allow some apps to have a different default naturally the question will be why not others. Why not streaming music, maps and messages?

It’s amazing how Facebook wants to be granted default messenger status on iOS after 10 years of not making iPad apps for their most popular services (Instagram and WhatsApp).

Oh but please tell me how this if for the customers Zuck.

I'm split on this one. They're rightfully emboldened seeing as how Apple's talk of how their first-party apps were forced upon users because of "security and privacy" was rubbish, since they now do allow third-party apps in some parts of iOS. That was obviously all about control and nothing more. But that being said, this is Facebook we're talking about here...

There really isn't much an argument there until any other messenger can have built-in support for SMS/MMS messaging, and even then the question would come down to given that third party app access to carrier-level functionality like that.

Can you imagine? would be hilarious. Billions of people buying their shiny "privacy" smoke phone only to have crap like this as default messaging app.

Yes, and that Apple logo on the back, changing it to a Facebook logo is where it was heading anyway.

"Congresswoman, that's the direction this was heading anyway."
"Congresswoman, do you like it when I call you Congresswoman?"
"Congresswoman, to clarify, you do not like being called Congresswoman repeatedly as a means of me verbally flipping you the bird with each question you ask?"

I don't use FB messenger. I won't install it, due to FB bad behavior. People can send me messages but ... I will never see them. I'm still on FB but it is getting worse and worse. So ... ewwwwww to this idea.

Saw the title and immediately started sing.

I've got nothing good to say about Messenger, and iMessage is light years ahead of anything out there. I never use Messenger. When I get a message on FB, I go to FB and deal with it there.

IMO, the internal changes and privacy protection that Apple would have to make do not seem worth it.
