I bought this adjustable qi stand for my desk. I think it should help a lot with the way I used to use the phone. Having to turn the phone towards my face isn't the best. For normal everyday unlocking its totally fine but for laying on surface unlocks you need something like this.

That is the problem right there. You didn't need no eraser with previous iPhones ;)

TouchID has its own quirks. I’ve found FaceID more reliable.

The only difference is that occasional hiccups with touch ID were still infinitely better than using your passcode to unlock the phone every time back then. Face ID may work ok, but it's not faster than touch ID most of the time and has some situations where its not as convenient to use as touch ID.
It has other situations where it is more convenient than ToucbID.

You memory is not good. Multiple threads on how badly Touch ID works. I even had trouble at first but with each device, Apple improved it as they will with Face ID.

Reliability maybe was the issue with Touch ID, not inconvenience. How could using Touch ID be more inconvenient than entering a passcode back then ?

It did not work with my wet or damp fingers (ie after shower, after swimming, after diving, at gym). It did not work with touch sensitive gloves (hello Canadian winter). So I would need to wait for Touch ID to fail, often end up waking up Siri, have to tell Siri to **** off, then having to do a passcode. Way slower and much more inconvenient than just doing a passcode in first place.

I love Face ID. It works in all the above conditions, and even with a toque, sunglasses, etc on (even at same time). I use a standing desk at work and just lean over my phone slighly and it unlocks fine.

My biggest gripe has been when I wake up first thing in the morning, face half buried in the pillow, trying to adjust to the brightness of the phone with one eye, grab the phone and check any messages what not I have. And have to either enter in passcode or subject the other eye to the perils of brightness.

Other than that, it’s great!

Mine opens the passcode screen immediately when it doesn’t recognize the finger. Just press home button

Well, fortunately I no longer need to worry about it for my phone since I had not had any issues with Face ID not recognizing my face.

It wouldn't be slower if you swiped up before waiting for it to unlock. Just pick up the phone (looking at it as you normally would) and swipe up. I do recommend turning off "Require Attention", which I have. For me, FaceID is faster and more reliable than TouchID:
  • Its WAY faster every time you use an app that uses TouchID/FaceID. There's NOTHING to do. Just tap the app and it opens, no extra step.
  • Same when tapping a notification from the lock screen (no extra step), or
  • When using Siri from a lock screen. (no extra step)
  • I find the swipe up quicker than searching for the home button. You can swipe up from anywhere at the bottom.
For me it really is as easy as having no security at all, yet more secure than anything we've had. John Gruber and several other reviewers make the same point.

Regarding reliability: I give tech support to a lot of friends and for a surprising number of them, touchID NEVER works. (maybe they have sweaty hands or are pressing it to hard or too soft, don't know). FaceID will probably work for them beautifully.

Also much better when using siri on a locked phone when driving (assuming you're using a cradle). No need to touch the phone at all.

Also with TouchID on my iPhone7+, I often had problems inadvertently triggering siri, when holding the home button after the press (just forgetfulness). Those problems are gone of course.

The only time it has ever failed for me was when I was tilting the screen to show FaceID to a friend, so it tried to use my friends face for FaceID. Even then I didn't have to use a passcode. I just hit the power button, tapped the screen and swiped up. Retry was never an option after a TouchID fail.

One other benefit of the new gestures on the iPhoneX. Control panel was almost never reliably accessible from within apps. For me that failed much more than it worked. Now the control panel can be accessed instantly and from anywhere. Big Win.
Turning off require attention has made everything MUCH faster and smoother. And I agree about how quick and simple it is in apps that authenticate via touch/faceID. There's no longer that extra step of enabling the sensor, it just scans your face automatically and you're done.

It's like enable the display to see notifications or control music by pressing home button or raising the phone.
Of course pressing home button is much faster. But the latter is more natural, and I see myself using it a lot.

I think the same applied to Face ID, not faster, but more natural.

Overall pretty inconvenient for me so far. I would say it only detects my face 75-80% of the time. Just this morning I had a surgical mask and cap on and it couldn’t recognize me. Sometimes after Face ID just doesn’t work and I hate having to press the power on off switch again to prompt it to scan my face again. Super inconvenient. Then you have to wait until the passcode screen pops up to get in...

I believe that Face ID indeed learns and improves as you use it.

Because I have sleep apnea, I sleep with a CPAP mask on my face. Of course, I was not wearing the mask when I first "enrolled". The first morning, Face ID would not authenticate when I woke up and went to check my notifications, and I had to type my passcode. Not ideal, but I could understand the limitation. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the next morning Face ID authenticated without issue. Same today. If you try to authenticate while wearing a surgical mask and cap, and enter your passcode when it fails, perhaps Face ID will adapt to "learn" your features in this configuration.

Yes, I'm finding that to be the case with me as well. It's unlocking my phone now more often and its much more consistent.
What is the difference when you are turning on and off? Is it really specific? attention mode, i mean.

I got one of these (along with a QC3.0 wall charger). Wireless charging and it keeps the phone angled nicely so it opens without fail, every time. Double win!

I think with it on, its needing to lock on to your eyes, and I think having glasses was impacting it adversely. So now its just using my face regardless if I'm looking directly at the phone

I do think it learns, with little changes (and I believe Apple advertises this). It is making many changes all at once that will confuse it (which is good, as that to me is exactly how it should work!) My Face ID works with a toque pulled down to my eyebrows, aviator sunglasses on, a coat covering part of my chin...and even all three of those at once.

FaceID is inconvenient just as TouchID is inconvenient.

- TouchID you cannot use the other hand to unlock since it only has one finger print.

- Touch ID you have to adjust your grip or hold on the phone so the thumb is over the scanner.

- Touch ID sometimes you press too hard and it presses down.

- Touch ID sometimes you just want to wake the phone and instead it logs you in.

Both features have downsides.

Not sure what iOS you are running but mine holds 5 finger prints. In fact, I can have my wife's print in there as well so she can unlock it. I got zero to hide.

It seems like you never used touch ID because everything you're claiming above is fake news :D
