The facial recognition feature has been poorly marketed, but no matter how you spin it, the removal of the headphone jack was a bad move by Apple.

I disagree. I rarely if ever used the headphone jack in my iPhone, and haven't used it at all in the last two years. I don't need it, and would just as soon Apple give me as small a phone as possible, with other features I do use, and if that means removing the headphone jack, so be it.

I am not likely to ever use facial recognition, because it is not secure, no matter how well it's marketed.

So did we ever discern whether this is an actual problem or the internet making a mountain out of a molehill? By this, I mean, had anyone been able to reproduce this issue? Surely it's in the hands of many reviewers by now and no doubt they're trying these same things. If all it takes is a picture I can't imagine it not being s reproducible scenario.

And now it's all about discussing differences between phones in this thread, in stead of the found issue with the S8!

/jumping ship

Cheers

It better only be a demo...... Can u imagine the number of Samsung users be outraged just because u can use a ordinary photo of yourself?

If true, that would see two black marks against Samsung... This one though, no where near as dangerious.

Yeah. It's been reproduced for the last SIX YEARS STRAIGHT!

Crazy this hasn't been patched.... even crazier that a company would use this lame-ass code UNCHANGED & tout it as a "secure" unlock method.
Gimmick of the highest degree......

You posted a link to an article from 2011....... if your attempt is to prove it was a problem in 2011, November, great, if your attempt is to prove it's a problem in April 2017, unsuccessful .

Did someone register their own nipple print? Cool. Hadn't heard that one yet.

I registered Touch ID using my toe print. Won't be surprised if it can be done with your nipples, but so long as it doesn't compromise the security of your phone, what's the harm?

How, they sold more, made their phone even more watertight and got a bit more space inside.

Is that one of those "alternate facts" we hear so much about....

Not only that but they've been selling Airpods by the bucketload.
Seems everyone got what they wanted.

I hate to defend Samsung here but it's always been a sh*tty form or security, but mostly for people who want a step above nothing.

Well, the fingerprint thing was a lot better and arguably a faster unlock, so by putting the fingerprint sensor on the back they seriously downgraded even that minimum.

I can unlock in darkness or even in my pocket too... If they had kept the sensor in the front, then you'd have a point.

So there new security can be defeated with a photo, the FBI will love this, a suspect won't unlock their S8, just use their face!

So you can choose between secure Iris scanning which is slow as ****, unreliable and requires you to hold your phone in an awkward angle to your face and fast Face Recognition, which is as secure as a 2 digit passcode.

Cool.

Or you can try the hit and miss fingerprint located next to the camera on the back.

Have you ever used an iris scanner? Didn't think so.

I have. I hope Apple stays away from such gimmick.
On the mobile phones it absolutely stupid. You have to pull the phone on an angle to locate your eyes and then it does get unlocked. And from my experience it was hit and miss. That kind of technology is ideal for unlocking doors or places where access is strictly controlled, and not for a phone that I pull out of my pockets to unlock like a thousand times a day! Plain stupid! Hope Apple does not implement this on the iPhone.

So, the face recognition can be bypassed by a photo and the fingerprint sensor is on the back right next to the camera, ensuring fingerprints and smudges constantly on the lens. And this is the phone that people think is going to worry Apple?

There is a tendency to overestimate the short-term impact of a particular move and underestimate the long-term ramifications.

Maybe the removal of the headphone jack does genuinely inconvenience some people at the moment, but think of the possibilities in the future. Increased interest in wireless headsets resulting in much better quality tech for one.

I use a 6S+, and I can't recall the last time I plugged something into the headphone jack.

Do you know who IS in charge of your technology curve? Businessmen.

It always have, since like forever! You can't have one without the other! And I don't give a crapp who is in charge, as long as the technology they invent is appealing to me. The guy you were quoting is absolutely right. If it was for some certain people we will still be on the stone age.

Well... I'm going to assume you're familiar with how to run the search functions on YouTube & Google??

There are videos of people unlocking Android phones using the INCREDIBLY insecure "Face Unlock", year after year after year.
The tech has NOT been "fixed" since it came out, soooooo it doesn't really matter which of these videos you watch now, does it??
The topic seems to have gotten so played out & boring that there's a drop off of people bragging about this exploit, right around the 2014 timeframe; but a teeny bit deeper digging finds more videos of people still showing how it still doesn't work.
Don't you think if they had overcome this hurdle; Google would have announced at an I/O their "improved security face unlock tech"?

HAPPY HUNTING!!!
