True, there's not a whole lot one can do in the supply chain. Other than change a vender. Unless they're the only one.

I think it is funny the OP's actions are being criticized on a site devoted to rumors and leaks about Apple. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if the OP's "confession" is an attempt to cover her or his tracks or if the OP themselves was an Apple employee or contractor and the actual source of the information.
Actually MacRumors site naming is from times that sharing tidbits about upcoming products or concerning Apple in general was fun and acceptable. This recent mix of press members, analysts, and like preaching what they like has tainted this site news. They have to remember none of us are rubber stamps to their forecasts of future Apple products and prospects. If I am going fault Mark German for one particular aspect it’s reporting about Apple’s HR themes he needs to back off and stop sensationalizing matters involving Apple employees to his benefit.

Interesting,. But the best leak I remember was the fella that found a pre production iPhone in a bar once, Anyone remember that ?😂
Yep from 2010, when we weren't serious and enjoyed life a lot better then these days. ;)

I remember it very clearly. Hands down! The best leak ever.

I gather you were the ones caught in the "canary trap" by Apple. Wish you both the best given your situation. Btw, Cult of Mac referenced the situation you speak of.

Did everyone forget about the Think Secret site and Asteroid?

Apple didn't even have to make up a fake product this time, just plant a false time line.

BTW, those not directly responsible for such actions are not automatically "clean." Apple can still bring suit, and in cases of insider trading, the Feds will have their say.

Hope the 15 minutes was worth it.

You and your sister both knew that what you were doing was wrong and you decided that some perceived internet fame was more important than doing the right thing. The price you and your sister will be paying for your actions will be justly deserved.

Precisely.

What was done is politely called “leaking” in these circles. What it really is is industrial espionage.

Period.

Tech companies invest billions of dollars in R&D in order to entice customers to buy their products. Stealing (what this is also called) details of that R&D provides info to the competition (here, Google and Samsung, primarily) enabling them to imitate desirable features earlier than they could if the details were not leaked. That might mean getting similar features onto their phones an entire product cycle earlier. That, in turn, denies the innovator (here, Apple, but this leaking is no more justified when it harms Google or Samsung) of the just fruits of their hard work.

This person and their sister deserve everything that will happen to them from a legal standpoint, as they likely cost Apple’s shareholders millions of dollars over the product lifecycle.

As we see with Mark Gurman, Apple will tolerate some level of this (under the rubric that there is no such thing as bad publicity). Gurman knows enough to keep things a bit vague and release stuff slowly, almost like a marketing campaign. But I believe he is still banned from official Apple events and Apple Park.

Of course this could still all be gaslighting and 941 simply ducked away even he/she sensed the net was closing in with the sob story.

TL;DR: OP finally got convinced that their actions weren't worth it and apologized and learned the error of their ways.

It's never ever worth it! The 15-sec amount of fame that you get isn't worth it.

Industrial espionage LOL

A lot of white knights and serious business up in this thread. Lighten up and get off your high horses.

Throughout the years, we all ended up here for the same reason...it's in the name of the website: MacRumors.

i find it so annoying and stupid that someone can get fired over something like this

its so unfair

they didnt do any wrong to anyone, they didnt to anything bad to any person (they did wrong to an entity without a soul - apple) and got punished like this?

i truly wish both of them all the best in the world, im praying so that the next job will be even better than apple in every way possible

i rarely or never read any leaks, i dont care about leaks, but i felt the need to comment here because i find it really really stupid that something like this can happen

hope that your sister will forgive you, family matters more, but its understandable for her to be upset and for you to feel guilty - i believe both of you will get out of this very well in time

wishing you both the best

Really? What do you call it? Rumors are rumors. These were not rumors. Stop ignoring theft done in the name of satisfying selfish desires to know things before a company is prepared to reveal that information.

Truly bad take.

truly bad empty reply with no arguments

How about it was stealing from the Apple shareholders? Do they count for nothing? If you were embezzling from your employer would you expect everyone to say “poor you”? Do you think there would be no consequences? This is absolutely the same thing. This person and their sibling were stealing from Apple.

apple shareholders, embezzling, stealing? my man take a look at the leaks this guy was leaking and explain how that information negatively impacted the shareholders and dragged the company down

i understand your point of view, but that applies to information that can impact the company in such a negative way that both apple & the shareholders lose money - they didnt lose anything because what they were sharing was basically "next update color blue is changed to red"

there needs to be a clear difference in the quantity and quality of the information shared, and punished accordingly, not simply fire the employee - what about the value the employee brought to the company? its 100 times more than what they were being paid (or more) generally speaking because thats how any business works

try to look at this thing from the perspective of the business, but also from the perspective of the employee

The employee was stealing. Pure and simple. If I steal from my employer I will be fired regardless of my hypothetical value.

And you minimize the value of what was taken. How do you know what value Apple assigns to this information. And it was more than color changes.

if i minimize the value of what was taken, then you minimize the value of the employee and the work done by them, which is infinitely bigger than what they leaked

That’s nonsense. Employees can be replaced. Especially if they are dishonest.
nonsense? do you have any knowledge on how a business operates?

the fact they can be replaced doesnt have anything to do with the value of their work in the time they worked at the said company

Lol. Yes I know how a company operates. Probably much more than you think.
