I mean..... the hell did you expect?!

It's MacRUMORS and we all still live for the iPhone 4 days..... so many will be sympathetic.

This person did something incredibly stupid after a massive amount of effort on their behalf to get were there were for an extra pay day. Thats the hash of it, they didn't leak dynamic display just so you could be happy a few days early. They did it for money. While I LOVED the leaks, I don't feel bad for the person. They made a choice (multiple actually, they were only caught when Apple made an effort to corral them after many leaks.) Decisions like that will catch up to you

We may never know the actual reason - it could be money, it could be for short-lived fame, it could be for ego, who knows!

I would also like to add that Tim's proclamation (see below), finally seems to have come true!

From this article:
Dear Team,

It was great to connect with you at the global employee meeting on Friday. There was much to celebrate, from our remarkable new product line-up to our values driven work around climate change, racial equity, and privacy. It was a good opportunity to reflect on our many accomplishments and to have a discussion about what’s been on your mind.

I’m writing today because I’ve heard from so many of you were were incredibly frustrated to see the contents of the meeting leak to reporters. This comes after a product launch in which most of the details of our announcements were also leaked to the press.

I want you to know that I share your frustration. These opportunities to connect as a team are really important. But they only work if we can trust that the content will stay within Apple. I want to reassure you that we are doing everything in our power to identify those who leaked. As you know, we do not tolerate disclosures of confidential information, whether it’s product IP or the details of a confidential meeting. We know that the leakers constitute a small number of people. We also know that people who leak confidential information do not belong here.

As we look forward, I want to thank you for all you’ve done to make our products a reality and all you will do to get them into customers’ hands. Yesterday we released iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and watchOS 8, and Friday marks the moment when we share some of our incredible new products with the world. There’s nothing better than that. We’ll continue to measure our contributions in the lives we change, the connections we foster, and the work we do to leave the world a better place.

Thank you,

Tim

Any of the three show a person with bad values. They do seem like they gained a bit of a following- I wouldn't be surprised if it started as one and ended as all three.

Sorry kids, but it caught up with them. They knew what they were doing.
Finding a phone in a bar that doesn't exist then getting sued out your ass because you showed it to the world is one thing. Accepting a job and then getting sued when you show company secrets is another.

Dynamic island was -so close- to being the first keynote/design shock in a long time, and they ruined it, i'm not surprised Apple came after them with full fury.

if theyre not paid their worth i dont blame them

if its pure greed, fame and ego then ye i agree its not ok

I’m aware of all that being a designer myself, but there are certain Chinese leakers who get applauded and these people have gotten their info from people just like the OP. I would never leak the information I work with and have signed NDA’s with many car manufacturers in my time, just pointing out how hypocritical it is of people to judge here when their threads have been received with open arms in the past.
There is a subtle difference between leaking information directly from Apple vs leaking information from a supplier who is a contractor to apple. In the end a leak is a leak I agree but to me there is that difference.

Indeed. It was legendary 👍🥰
My 8th grade technology class was halted, no HW due that day, it was a full on discussion of- do you think this will be the next iPhone?
I was one of the few who wanted it to be real. Then it was.

Such good times. I still feel like the 4/4S was the best looking iPhone that came out. Like Jobs said.. it felt like an expensive camera, the design made it feel precious. (If only the extremely breakable glass had the ceramic shield technology of now).

Initially thought this is about stopping using iMessage or Message on macOS but turns out this is a farewell message due to Apple caught a leaker whose account here in MR is almost a year old and the Twitter account is already deactivated/deleted...

Even though it was said as per rumors that iOS 17 will not drop support for A11 devices, I still believe that A12 will be the minimum requirement for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17...

It's already less than a month to go before WWDC 2023 and for sure there will be last minute leaks regarding what to expect that will be announced on that day...

Well, here is the corporation for you. Lifeless and ruthless.
Pay no heat and loyalty to any of them.
I hope they can get out of legal trouble as soon as possible.

What legal defense do they have? They leaked confidential corporate information. I'm sure, before joining Apple, they were forced to sign NDAs and if you go against these NDAs, you have no legal recourse, lol.

The OP’s sister will likely never get a job again in silicone valley or anywhere where a company is competing against others. That’s the downside of leaking information, you’ll never be trusted again professionally. I wish them well and have enjoyed the info, but they knew the risk and I doubt they are expecting any pity. If the sister didn’t realise her brother was making their conversations public, I’d imagine their relationship is over after this too, not good.

What did they think would happen?
From the amount of leaks they got correct while not being caught, they probably hoped for multiple years of an extra cash stream while also working at Apple and adding to the resume. High profile leaks are easy to fake however if you have enough execs loyal (and Apple is damn tight); and this person got screwed.

I've talked to a top chip designer that wont deluge any information beyond the A6.

Yup. It's also sad because she could have been completely unaware he was taking the information. She may have been working from home, and leaving her laptop/phone unlocked and unintended while taking a quick break while he was visiting. It only takes someone a minute or two to scan the last dozen or so emails/chat messages for information. It doesn't make her any less culpable as it's her responsibility to verify her devices are secure/locked when unintended but in my book, it's violating trust on an entirely different level.

If she does exist, and it's not just some "sob" story to CYA then I doubt their relationship will ever recover to what it was.

Indeed. I worked for a Formula One team many years ago and I remember when signing the NDA the conversation was very stern. It was along the lines of ‘when you’re sat around the dinner table with your Dad/GF/Gran, you do not discuss anything you have seen or worked on in this factory, clear. You will be sued?!’ As frustrating as that is at the time, you know you have to abide by it. On the other hand I love hearing from others that has done it as it’s the natural urge to be nosey lol.

Many in here have mentioned about the Apple employee being sued. If the story is true, unless Apple suffered financial loss as a result of the leaked info then the most that will happen to the employee is that they will be fired. I am sure Apple fires many employee's on a monthly/yearly basis and it never gets a mention in the media but if the story is true then the relative has done even more harm by using social media to inform the world that their Apple employee relative has been fired for leaking information. At most the employee would have been fired and that be the end of it and the only way employers would have known about the firing is when it comes up during interviews or referencing checks, but now because the relative has blabbed about it online, the whole world is now going to know about this person getting fired from Apple and the reasons why. The employee could have gone about their life as per usual but not now, now every potential employer will know this ex-employee is a leaker of confidential company information and therefore cannot be trusted.

Well done relative, proving what an utter fool they are.

I suspect something like what you describe is what happened (if it happened). The other possibility is that the leaker WAS the employee and invented the sister to try to throw them off his (and he would have to be a man) scent.

Apple will have no difficulty whatsoever in establishing damages. Moreover, there may be a liquidated damages clause in the employee’s NDA.

Finally, there are ways of getting it out there that the employee was terminated due to failure to adhere to the terms of the NDA. Not saying that no one in Silicon Valley will hire her again (engineers are a scarce and, thus, highly prized commodity) but it may be difficult, especially for a few years.

Trust is hard to rebuild.

I suspect that there could be some truth in what you have written in your second sentence.

The tone of the OP's original message (which strikes me as being a bit excessively emotional if referring to a sibling) lends credence to that scenario.
