Whatever happens on the phone needs to stay on the phone. Any backdoors or hacking needs to stop. Privacy is privacy without “extras” from governments. We don’t need to lose our freedoms in the name of national security

What do you want with the phone? Almost everything goes through the internet servers. Your files is in iCloud, G-drive, Dropbox. Your contacts and conversations are on Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook. Your phone call history are recorded by your telecom company, and your emails stored in plain text... Thats the case for 90% of people.

Also, I thought Apple fixed the greybox issue with the latest software updates

Simple politics - the republicans have been pushing for government backdoors for a while now. Makes it a lot easier for them to spy on their political opponents and doesn't require you to blackmail the Ukraine for it.

So there’s no other way to stop this massive terrorist attack besides unlocking this guy’s iPhone? Law enforcement is powerless to discover and prevent it without unlocking this iPhone? Don’t you have work to be doing, Mr. Barr?
This massive terrorist attack (which was from what I read likely not terrorism, but just someone with a ____ed up brain who get insulted over his moustache and thought that would justify killing as many people as he could) cannot be stopped because it has happened. It could have been stopped by the Saudi Air Force not hiring nutcases, by refusing a gun license for hunting to nutcases coming into the USA on a visit from Saudi Arabia, and by not selling semi-automatic guns to nutcases who got a gun license for hunting.

Similar to what I posted on reddit the other day about this same topic.

The government would like to have the data off the POS's phone who shot up the naval base in Pensacola.
And now we have people whining about privacy. Well, I'm all for privacy. But I ask this: suppose the POS in Pensacola had on his phone, communications with a sleeper cell here in the U.S. which showed the next attack and when and where it would happen. Said attack would be similar in scope to 9/11. Would YOU want the "authorities" to know what is on that phone to prevent the attack from occurring?

There is no evidence at all that this was a terrorist attack and not just some nutcase. Who decided to take revenge when he was made fun of by telling him that his moustache made him look like a porn actor.

And think: If there is a sleeper cell, nobody knows who the sleeper is, so it might be you. So you should hand over your phone to the FBI right now.

In regards to the "If you've done nothing wrong, then you have nothing to hide," crowd, I may not have much to hide, but I don't want to advertise what I do have, either.
A while ago we found in the UK that lots of our MPs (member of parliament) had been fiddling their expenses, including the husband of the then Home Secretary putting the cost of the porn he was watching onto his wife's expenses account. Guess what, now their expenses are hidden from the public. "If you've done nothing wrong, then you have nothing to hide", so I expect they are still fiddling their expenses. And we still don't know why an American pole dancer got paid £100,000 by the state just after having a one night stand with Boris Johnson.

If hackers steal the Apple backdoor key from the FBI, hundreds of millions of iPhone user will be vulnerable to having banking data, health data, private photos and correspondence, and anything else stolen from their devices.
Can you edit your post please and change "If" to "When"?

So what exactly did the FBI get out of the Graykey software on the device. There is no information if there was full download of the contents, or just a text file saying we connected to the iPhone and found out it is an iPhone12,5.

As far as I know there was two iPhones, maybe one did not have passcode enabled, but the other did.

Most probably nothing. I feel that this is all just a bit of a show. I can easily imagine that it was quickly realised (or known in advance) that Apple would not reciprocate, and thus this 'news' was put out there as some form of punishment. Expect [much] more of the same. Next year and the year after. And the year after that. Keep going until the public have been softened-up enough to accept total and complete government surveillance. Then they will ask for Apple's help in catching the 'terrorists' who stole the FBI's super secret backdoor credentials and hacked the entire planet. And so it will continue...

how can they break it - even if I want to listen the music via cable in my car I need to unlock my phone with Face ID to confirm USB connection

That would be my main gripe with this.

So I have to constantly enter my passcode to "trust" my Mac over and over again - but that box can still unlock my phone.

I will turn USB accessories back on until they fix that.

I’d imagine Apple has more than one of these GreyKey’s lying around the office. Pretty skeptical the FBI could crack an iPhone before Apple could fix it. Pro hackers, maybe. But not the Feds with an off-the-shelf plug-and-play device.

I actually don't think they do.

But they should have, obviously.

Apple doesn't have a counter intelligence department - they are just still green behind the ears and new to all this, and it's so far from Apple's daily business, they've never thought of this.

But they really need it now.

Action, though well intended, is impotent when you don't have accurate information.

You want to get into someone's phone but that is premised on the story that has been made up by entities (FBI,NSA, etc) who
- are apparently incompetent to stop things like this
- are known to have lied about things like this in the past
- have every incentive to make up stories like this to further their own power and influence. For some it might be budget, but for most it's about much more than just money - something money can't buy, power.
- in some cases are proven to have instigated false flag attacks in order to further their agenda (declassified CIA files showing the false flag attack on a US warship in order to start vietnam war and countless other examples, official CIA documents)
- In countless instances proven to lie to the american people.

Basically in summary you are voting to give your power away to a bunch of hypocritical, psychopathic murderers and liars.

That's also why they want to take your guns away all the time, and why they want to break into someone's phone even though they already have all the data.

Other than that, I'd be fully with you there ;)

Other secure companies may as well also gear up while your at it.... It's gonna be one hell of a match.

However, the 'USB accessories' option in Touch ID section on iOS from 11.4.1 onwards, designed to prevent this exact thing as well.. That's why Apple designed that feature..

In this case with the iPhone 11 Pro Max the people using the phone must have disabled it. (enabled this option)

"Administrators can control the USB Accessories setting on supervised iOS devices using Apple Configurator or mobile device management."

What? All Politicians from all parties lying as if the truth has no meaning? There, I fixed it for you. 😉
Your whataboutism fixed nothing 🙄 And false equivalence is false. Let’s keep on topic and not get diverted, ok?

In that vein:

Interesting news item today from one of the most conservative, right wing and pro-Republican (and Rupert Murdoch owned) publications: The Wall Street Journal, of all places:

When you’ve lost the Wall Street Journal, things really are not going well for you. Looking forward the the impeachment of Barr, and his disbarment (no pun intended) as well. Further disgraceful actions by a once-respected man.

He’ll be another in a long list of Trump lackeys and sycophants forever tarred by their own actions, never to be forgotten. History will not be kind to them, and sunlight (and elections) are the best disinfectant.

This is why Apple will remove any physical connector to the outside world for their future iPhones. How would the Graykey work if there is nothing to connect to?

I thought GreyKey didn’t work past iOS 11. Must be new and improved. I shouldn’t be surprised. The cat and mouse game continues.

Lock down? You mean create an unhackable, unbreakable operating system? For the first time in history? Hope away, pal.

a man can dream? :D

connectors are just ports...

they can easily open up the iPhone and solder a few pins onto the contact pads on the PCB. Once they find the USB controller serial port, it's game over.

(which is not hard, Google how they hacked kindle)

A shame that TDS has infected even the one place I figure I can usually come to avoid this utter & complete nonsense.
If you don’t want to hear anything except toadies kissing up to Trump, best stick to Fox and similar propaganda outlets.

The political forum here at MR is not a safe space, and you’ll likely be exposed to actual facts, rather than the “alternative” facts typically preferred by Trump’s followers.

You’re being lied to by Barr and Trump about this issue, full stop. If you can’t handle the truth, stay in your echo chamber and continue pretending we don’t have the most corrupt administration in any of our lifetimes, up to their eyes in the deepest swamp ever created.
