I once ordered tires for my car to be delievered via UPS. I was waiting when the guy arrived, and went outside so he wouldn't have to carry them all in for me. So he goes into his truck and opens the back door and ~10 small packages fall out of the back. He then proceeds to wade through a knee-high sea of packages piled on the floor to retrieve my tires and throws them (per my instruction, they're just tires!) out the back door.

I'm not sure why, but I always imagined a UPS truck to be a well-organized ordeal, with packages lined on shelves in some order related to the relative delivery point along the route.

Apparently not.

every driver is different. some are more organized and professional then others. just like any profession

The next flight out of Hong Kong is Flight #9168 tomorrow at 7 PM( 7 am EDT).

According to Google it's "12:39am Tuesday (HKT) - Time in Hong Kong"

They're just starting the day, something should be leaving today right?

There is one going to Memphis via Tokyo leaving at 1:20pm HK time, one via Paris at 5:50pm HK time, and one via Anchorage (seems most likely) leaving at 7:00pm HK time.

Flight #9168 leaving 07:16PM UTC (which is 19:16 ETC) if I'm doing my Time math right.

So leaving in 9 hours?

"The plane was leaving at blah blah going west at 488knots, plane 2 is leaving blah blah going east at mach2. What color are the seats?"

And I hate the thread starter! :)

Hong Kong is 12 hours ahead of us East Coasters. So the plane doesn't leave until 7 am Tuesday morning EDT.

I live in Anchorage and there is a huge FedEx distribution hub here, one of only 4 in the world: Memphis, Anchorage, Guangzhou-China and Paris.

Everything from Asia comes through here and then on to Memphis. It is not uncommon to see 12-15 FedEx DC10s on the ground at one time as well as 4-5 more from UPS and another 15-20 from other carriers.

From what I can gather, when a product like this is 'red-hot,' FedEx will begin gathering pallets of shipments here and embargo them. Some will be in the warehouse screened off because they haven't cleared customs, other shipments will be left in containers on the ramp. Planes don't sit still for very long, they'll head back to HK or Seoul or China and pick up continuing inventory of, say, iPads or other products. Then on 6/23, the cargos will get swapped out and leave here to arrive in Memphis around 8p-midnight on 6/23 for delivery to you and to stores on the day of 6/24. FWIW, I have tracking numbers for my 2 iPhones but 'no information yet.' That's probably because the relatively small Alaska cargo is set aside and is probably here already. My order(s) won't get entered into the FedEx system until they clear customs and are ready for delivery the morning of 6/24.

I am not 100% sure this is correct. My tracking number shows my phone as in transit to the Hong Kong airport. If your tracking number has no information then your phone is still sitting at the factory and FedEx has not picked it up yet.

Also keep in mind that sometimes the status doesn't show when something has left until it gets to the next place. For example, all day yesterday I just saw that "Shipment information was received" but now I look at it and it was picked up 3 hours later, yet I didn't see that it was picked up in Shenzhen until it left Shinzhen 13 more hours later. At which point I got like 2 new statuses, one of which was 13 hours old. So while it may look like it is on an island in HK there's a HK to Alaska flight in the air right now scheduled to land in about 4 hours that it would not surprise me if most everyone's phone that shipped over the weekend was on and we'll get the statuses once it process for the 1st time in Alaska.

i called fedex because i have another international package coming tomorrow. so i gave the iphone tracking number. she said it reached alaska today and waiting to clear customs. so im going to guess thats why on fedex site it still says in transit LANTAU ISLAND HK. once it clears we will get new tracking info

This is a phone from the "12:09PM Left FedEx origin facility" batch?

It still should say, " Departed Local Sort facility, Lantau Island, HK". Oh well, I guess the system didn't process the scan or didn't get scanned at all. I hope mine was on the same flight.

im sure yours is there also. i think once they get ready for memphis it will update. do you know when that plane landed

In the past with international shipments, I've sometimes seen where on the tracking page, it looks like it's held up with no updates. Then, all of a sudden, there's 2-3 updates that show up and it's cleared customs or at a US facility.

Hizzah! I think mine is in Anchorage as well.

sweet, since im in Los angeles they should just fly it out to me today :). I hate fedex because they always come by late  . ups is here around 11a. but its on the way i cant wait until the 24th

edit: does shipment release means it will be on its way to memphis soon?

Unfortunately, I can't find any flights scheduled to leave to Memphis today besides Flight 4 which already left before we got our shipment releases.
