I've read a lot of these forums during the launch / delivery cycle & there's a subtle change in many peoples attitude and a regrettable sense of entitlement emerging.

Maybe it's the iUP driving annual cycles & everyone else then feels the need too, but many people seem to now believe it's default that they should have a new iPhone each year & then turn around and whine that it's not as impressive as they'd hoped. Nobody made you buy it - do your research, decide the value relative to your own personal circumstances.

This "try-before-you-buy on Launch Day" mentality is driving me nuts too. The 14-day returns policy is being abused by people buying two colours, or two sizes, just to keep a favourite & return the other. This also (ultimately) drives up prices & restricts initial supply to those of us who *do* know what we want.

Go to the damn store and make a decision ...
To be fair, apple also encourages abuse of the 14-day window. Many stories on here of people bringing devices in for repair, and being quoted a 7-day or more turnaround. Instead of a loaner device or just handing over a new device (like they used to do quite often), the apple geniuses tell you to buy a new device and return it when your repair is ready.

In other words, that 14-day window hides a lot of sins.

If you dont value anything below:

Best OLED with Natural Colour Tuning.
Better Modem
Faster CPU
More Memory for Apps Switching.
U1
WiFi 6
Much Bigger Battery
Camera - Especially with Night Mode, Any body who cares about taking photos and treasure those moment, not matter how rare you use it.

Then yes it is probably not worth it for you, dont upgrade or get the iPhone 11.

It is not about if one values the above or not. It is about what one is upgrading from.

If one is upgrading from iPhone XR or iPhone XS then it is not worth it. Especially for the price that Apple is charging.

Do you think the iPhone XS from last year is still not capable of running programs and games for another year?

The processor used in iPhone XS is faster than Snapdragon 855 cpu used in Samsung’s top phones. If that is the case is it really needed to upgrade the phone which will probably not benefit in real life performance that much. People are not going to run CPU benchmarks all day to feel happy with their iPhone 11 Pro purchase.

By the time games come out which will need the power, iPhone 12 will release at the same price as iPhone 11, today. We get 5G and pencil support, though.

Oh, really?

So I don’t have the right to feel ripped off? - And what happens if I “violate” your proposed law?

I feel ripped off. Hence why I’m returning the phone. Sue me.
You can feel anything you want. Doesn’t mean your feelings are accurate or honest.

I was interested until I spent about half hour in store using a pro max next to my 6S Plus for the same tasks. The larger screen is pointless for most things as the extra length is practically useless. OLED is great, but barely noticeable unless it's dark. The camera quality was not night and day difference. Low light performance is better, but night mode seems to be mostly just a typical Apple re-branding of something mundane... extended shutter and some shadow push.

I walked out extremely disappointed. It was in no reasonable way $1200 in incremental value over my current 6S Plus, which had its battery replaced a year ago. If the phone was somewhat ready for the next four years, with 5G, two way charging, etc., I'd probably feel differently.
I went from a 6s plus to an 11. Basically same weight and size and massive improvement in pretty much everything.

the 6s plus can’t compete with the regular 11 on any metric. I don’t know about the pro or pro Max but I suspect it’s not close.

If anything, this shows that the 8 is still a damn good phone. My better half received her 11 Pro yesterday and after playing with it I felt a bit disappointed too. I'm not big into photography and don't game on phones, so for me it's essentially just a more expensive and heavier phone (which is clearly felt if you walk around with it in your pocket) without offering much benefit in return. The only thing I'd really like to have is eSIM/dual SIM since I travel a lot internationally. I hope the rumors are true that Apple will bring a refreshed version of the 8 next spring ...

My 8+ is more than a Damn Good Phone. It’s a great phone. ;)

Maybe the 6S Plus can't compete on metrics, but metrics only matter in so much as they do something useful, and using both phones side-by-side for typical phone tasks, there was very little difference.

I had a similar feeling when I went to collect my iPhone 11 Pro Max 512gb. When I went to the Apple Store to collect my order, I tested the phone out. I felt it was not worth to upgrade my phone this year.

I cancelled my order and have decided to wait for the 5G model next year which will have a new form factor and pencil support, too. That will be a big upgrade.

I know it is fun to upgrade to a new iPhone and watch every year, but this year Apple has not done much for me to spend another US $2000 for a new phone and watch.

I will surely do so next year without hesitation.

My carrier even offered me a special deal because my 2 year contract is ending soon. I requested the, to work out a plan in which I can get that deal next year. Don’t mind getting a free iPhone 12 Max, next year. He he!

Any have to miss out with the fun this year.

2 year contract? What carrier are you with?

Actually I used to upgrade to every new phone. Sometimes 1 new phone every 3 months. Then later 1 phone per year and now I am starting to realize there really is no real benefit.

IPhone XS can play games just as fast as iPhone 11 Pro, apart for the games loading faster. The 1 or 2 secs saved is not worth spending $1500 again for a new phone.

If you really want the best of the best then you will have more options with Android because now smaller companies are releasing phones with fast processors at half the price of what Apple or Samsung charge for their flagship phones.

Check out the ASUS ROG Phone 2 which costs half the price of the iPhone 11 Pro and is faster in real life usage.

This is an eye opener for Apple and Samsung who take consumers for granted by releasing phone with small upgrades to make money.

I am in Hong Kong. Over here carriers offer 2 year contracts. I don’t mind getting a phone without a contract but this year I really didn’t feel the need to upgrade.

I will just sign a temp 1 year sim contract and sign a 2 year contract with a free iPhone 12 pro max (or whatever is coming next).

Just return it, that’s why Apple has a 14 day return policy

That is one advantage we in Hong Kong don’t have. Over here, once you open the box, you can’t return it. Hell, even if you bought it and not even open it, Apple will cut 15% as restocking fee.

I love the yearly buyer remorse posts.
i wonder what he expected the phone to do before he bought it.
ripped off? Too funny.
If you don’t like the phone, just return it. No need for hand wringing.

I said in another post, it is even worth upgrading from XS to 11 if you dont value OLED. Since you aren't really paying much from reselling XS to buy 11.

I think your answer echo my points. Since you value purely from CPU performance perspective. Apart from arguably OLED, the 11 is even better than last year's XS in every way at a price point that is much lower.

And if you are upgrading from XR, you get more Memory.

You get better Camera, Any of the 11 line up has better Camera performance than XS.

There are no other iPhone upgrade in the past few years that present as big of a leap as 11 in terms of hardware and pricing.

And precisely because you dont value any of those things, and you simply value CPU performance, and that is why you have your answer.

This requires some responsibility on the part of the consumer, which is anethema for many of the people whining on these boards.

I always purchase 64gb phones so the pro pricing is not as far away from the standard 11 price. Just move your photos more often and save heaps of money. Apple charges wayyyyyy too much for memory on the iPhones.
Yep! They charge too much for more memory on iPhones, and WAY too much more for GPS model on iPads. It's redic!

Diminishing returns. A $40,000 is not twice as fast or efficient as a car at half the price. Ironically, that’s closer to true for the phone. This is more likely a case of the OP trying to fill a personal void with retail therapy only to find out that twice as new doesn’t make you twice as happy.

It's perfectly okay to be unhappy with an expensive purchase and to return it. Stop feeling like you've been wronged somehow. Just return it and move on. No one will judge you.

8 to an 11 Pro seems like a pretty solid upgrade: better display (more display area to size, higher res / nits / contrast / PPI), a couple of generations of CPU/GPU, better water resistance (4m IP68 vs. 1m IP67), good bit better battery life, __much__ better camera systems, U1 for future, better wireless tech - and a change to a better (subjectively) user interface design.

In a package that's only 0.22" taller, 0.16" wider and 0.04" thicker :)

If you’re not into photography than yes return it and wait for 5G and USB-C coming next year and that will be the only difference.

I bought the 11 Pro in midnight green yesterday. It’s 256GB just like my iPhone 8.

Anyway, I feel ripped off and thinking about returning it. It’s more than twice the price, but it’s not twice the phone. I was honestly looking forward to this purchase. I thought that I would be satisfied, but I’m not.

In fact, I hardly notice a difference between the two phones in terms of usefulness. The OLED is a little better, but I honestly don’t notice it. I feel that my iPhone 8 is still plenty good and fast with iOS 13. I don’t play games and I feel that I don’t need the better internal specs.

Battery life on the 11 Pro is better. That’s the only advantage that I see. Otherwise, the Pro is just too bulky and heavy. I feel that the 8 is the perfect size for one hand use.

It just feels like the latest and greatest doesn’t offer anything particularly worthy of an upgrade, especially at $600 more.

I’ve seen plenty of posts about how smartphones have reached a plateau and now I finally understand what that means.
Just get iPhone 11 everything is the same except the OLED and zoom camera at half the price.

This is the transition I recently made. I never used FaceID/had an OLED screen before, so the upgrade was significant for me. I tend to upgrade every two years, as I feel that that way you see a real difference between the models. Personally think upgrading every year is silly, and individuals won’t see much of a difference. But I also understand that it’s nice to have the latest and greatest.

If one is in the IUP is probably best to get the new phone each year. Eventually one of these iPhones will be so great that it will pay not to upgrade the following year.
