It's amazing how absolutely ridiculous some people's beliefs or understandings of things are.

I mean, really. I can't imagine being a small business owner and having to deal with completely out-of-their-mind people like you.

----------

I hope you realize how absolutely idiotic this is.

You're comparing costs between a $2000 MacBookPro and a ****** $750 windows laptop. And you're not acknowledging the fact that you were using a decade old OS until the "Vista upgrade." I mean really. How stupid.

1. You are assuming that laptop is ****. I'll have you know its still running today as my dads machine with out any failures. I did upgrade the 5400rpm HD to 7200rpm though. 10.5 came out in 2007 wasn't that when those nvidia failures were made?

2.Who cares how old the OS is if it does everything you need it to? Also since when is 5 years a decade? XP - 2001, Vista 2006

If you are going to try to make an argument, do it with facts, not worthless personal opinion and exaggerations

Also you can get osx for free. Doubt apple would care much

There is a certan sites of pirates that have lion, and most osx;s for free. if you want to steal from apple.
Also I can vouch for no antipiracy in osx.
even gave my real info and apple could care less.

you pay for the computer. the least they can do is offer cheap upgrades worth a lunch or two.

This guy nailed it.

Remove, twitter, Facebook, notifications, game center, and put Notes back into Mail, and I'll agree with you.

To me 10.6 is the best OS X has ever been, 10.7 felt like a mis-step and 10.8 just fixes some of that and adds, to me, a bunch of useless crap that should be their own apps, and not provided by Apple.

I don't like their idea of make separate apps that do less, I want combined Apps that do more. I WANT Notes, Mail and Calendar to be 1 application. I want FaceTime and Messages to be one application. To me separating them just makes things feel like the opposite of what tech has been doing all this time, making less things do more. I can understand why they are that way on the iPad and iPhone, but bringing that to the PC makes it feel like they are taking a step backwards to me.

I really wish that I had not signed up for iCloud and that 10.6 would run on my Air because I would much prefer to still be using that. The only reason that I have not moved back to Windows is because I hate Windows 8 more than 10.7/8. I'm heavily looking into moving into Linux/GNU now.

Purchase a Mac in 2001 (I 'll go with iMac to go mid range):
$1,299 (assume it came with 10.0)
10.1 - $129
10.2 - $129
10.3 - $129
10.4 - $129
10.5 requires a G4 Or newer so we will assume your MacBook Pro came with 10.5
$1,999 (base cost)
10.6 $29
10.7 $29

Total cost(assuming no RAM or HDD upgrades along the way)
$3,872

Purchase a Dell in 2001 (going off a Dell I bought in 2001)
$1,300 (came With Windows XP Home)
Replaced With new laptop for Vista
$750 (came with Vista)
Win7 upgrade $120

Total Cost(assuming no RAM or HDD upgrades)
$2,170

If you are buying a $750 laptop when Vista arrived, you're buying a macbook based purely on the fact that the macbook will be faster than the $750 laptop of that era. Trust me, I know because my Windows laptop is from the same time period.

Is having a windows PC cheaper? It certainly can be. You can find some very cheap hardware. The reality is though that in the end you're not saving as much as you might guess for similar hardware. $400 over 10 years isn't a whole lot.

The Social networking integration is not noticeable if you DO not use it. I may have social networking accounts but I don't need it on my desktop so I won't use it.

You can make facetime calls out of messages. OI know I did it once or twice.

Gamecenter will be a .app so you don't need to open it! okay, I pefer notes not being in mail because some times I want to leave mail closed. I think thats a better step. Why have it some wheres where you need an app to get to it?

Oh what got me to move from SL to Lion? Wait, I know, it was the integration of contacts and calendar between my desktop system and my iOS devices. Otherwise there have been blessed few features for me. But this single feature has been a lifesaver by allowing me to know that contacts and calendar items are always synced across all my devices and systems.

I feel like users who paid to upgrade to Lion are getting ripped off. I upgraded to Lion because I am a huge apple supporter and loved the idea of a new OS for $30. Now with the release of Mountain Lion just a short year later, I'm regretting my decision of purchasing OS Lion. Now if I want to get 10.8 I will have to pay $50 while those who didn't upgrade only pay $20. I at least expected there to be a discount for Lion users. Any other Lion users regretting the upgrade?

Why do you have to pay $50 to get Mountain Lion? Where do you get that from? Mountain Lion is $20 when you have Lion!

Feeling ripped off

Apologies , I just posted this in the Mountain Lion thread , it's probably better suited to this one .

"My €3500 17" 2010 Macbook Pro with 8gb RAM still has 18 months of its Applecare left to go . Apple Trade-in now values it at €647 on its website . I no longer qualify for Mountain Lion's ' Airplay' promise after less than 18 months in the Apple 'family' .

The drive to generate future bonuses for Mr. Cook and co. has replaced my 'reasonable expectation of a fit for purpose laptop ' for at least the life of the Applecare and I am now regretting buying into Mac as I am not fortunate enough to be able to spend this kind of money every 18-36 months .

As for Apple's predilection for high-end hardware , that would only be a mitigating factor if it could be used for Flac , Bluray or came with a simple dvd drive or tolerated , without Jailbreaking , other types of Ringtones or alternatively sourced Audio/Video material which came with HD Audio to match the HD Picture Quality and didn't come up with silly ' Mastered for iTunes ' labels in preference to genuine and easily available audio excellence because Apple's 'cut' isn't big enough .

I have purchased iPad 1, 2 , 3 and iPhone 4S but now regret what I've spent not because I haven't enjoyed the kit initially at least , but because I feel I am being led down a road that will make disappointment inevitable .

I don't have a problem with reinvesting , I just don't believe that this timetable was unavoidable and have lost my faith in Apple .

Good Luck to those of you who have not ......"

I don't really see the point here. Why not be able to upgrade to ML makes your computer obsolete ?

Are you happy with the performance ? If no, I don't think it would be better with this new OS. If yes, why bother ?

Oh what got me to move from SL to Lion? Wait, I know, it was the integration of contacts and calendar between my desktop system and my iOS devices.

SL already had that with MobileMe. I believe Google also will sync with both. So to me thats not a valid reason when there are ways to do it and still keep 10.6.

DONT BUY MOUNTAIN LION, YOU ARE ONLY GOING TO GET RIPPED OFF.

THERE IS GOING TO BE A NEW OS NEXT YEAR TOO, 10.9 AND THAT WILL BE ONLY 20$ TOO.

Why pay 20$ this year when you can get the same upgrade plus more for 20$ next year.

OR BETTER YET.

Wait 2 years and you will get 3 OS's for the price of 1!!

Are you seriously complaining about getting a 20$ OS upgrade every year?

Ripped Off

"Are you seriously complaining about getting a 20$ OS upgrade every year? "

Speaking personally , Yes ! I'm complaining because you are getting more for your $20 than I am :)

Also most of my iPads and my iPhone will have Airplay and yet , in total , they all cost less than my Macbook where I would need it the most !

Poor decision from Apple . I think its quite reasonable to expect to remain contemporary with updates for a few years after a major purchase . Intel and others have a published , clear timeline of their current and future chip development plans . Apple could follow suit .

Best

I was not and am not a MobileMe subscriber. Given the cost vs benefits of MM I did not subscribe. Now that it is integrated in to the free iCloud stuff though I like the integration.

And 10.7 has not been bad to my wife and I. Now ML may be a different story as it took me 6 to 9 months (can't remember now) to upgrade to 10.7 from 10.6.

^This. Running Windows is not worth the savings.
Many tools (some video production tools, for example) are not available on Mac OS X or Linux, or have less integration, which makes the tasks more difficult than necessary. + I can use video filters on Windows, which are not available on Mac OS X or Linux.

Or wait 10 years and buy OS for 20 with 9 years worth of features. Or don’t buy a computer at all and save 1099.

Is it Apples fault that you buy the wrong devices?

What are the right devices exactly ?? If a 17" top-of-the-line Macbook Pro can barely remain current for over a year then I don't believe its' designers care a jot about their customers .

Either way , Apple will no longer have to worry about what I buy , right or wrong ;)

Speaking personally , Yes ! I'm complaining because you are getting more for your $20 than I am :)

This has always been the case. Nothing has really changed, except that everyone is complaining about getting OS X for much cheaper than we have in the past.

In the past, OS X cost about $130 and there was a release every 3 years or so, roughly speaking. At $30 per update, you're paying $120 every 4 years for OS X updates, instead of $130 every three. At $20 per update, you're paying $120 every 6 years for OS X updates.

There really is NOTHING to complain about. As has been discussed, Airplay uses Quicksync, which is only found in recent Intel processors. There's no other way to make it work that smoothly.

And who cares what the other person is getting for $20. You're paying $20 for an update for your desktop OS! This is unheard of. If it gets you features that you want, buy it. If not, don't buy it. You are unaffected by what someone else gets out of the update. I don't really have a use for Airplay, so it doesn't affect me, but I'd sure as heck be buying it even if I would and couldn't because some of the other features look quite good.

Even if only just to stay current, Apple would have my $20. It's amazing to me how people complain so much about paying significantly less for OS X updates than they have in the past. Apple has switched to an update model that saves you lots of money. What are you really complaining about?

What are the right devices exactly ?? If a 17" top-of-the-line Macbook Pro can barely remain current for over a year then I don't believe its' designers care a jot about their customers .

Missing out on one (relatively minor) feature means it's no longer current? If that's the case, Apple's current iMac, the non-retina MacBook Pros, the Mac Pro, and the Mac mini are all not current, because none of them can use the PowerNap feature of Mountain Lion.

You DO know that, with just about every release of OS X, there have been features that only the latest Macs could take advantage of, right? This shouldn't surprise you.

This is ridiculous. Give me your 17" MBP if you're so unhappy with it. I have a 2009 13" MBP and you don't see me complaining...

OSX use to cost $129 and you complain that you have to spend $50 over a 1 year period? $29 to use the latest OS for a year is very cheap!
