I feel like users who paid to upgrade to Lion are getting ripped off. I upgraded to Lion because I am a huge apple supporter and loved the idea of a new OS for $30. Now with the release of Mountain Lion just a short year later, I'm regretting my decision of purchasing OS Lion. Now if I want to get 10.8 I will have to pay $50 while those who didn't upgrade only pay $20. I at least expected there to be a discount for Lion users. Any other Lion users regretting the upgrade?

You don't make any sense. Current SL users are not required to pay for Lion because they were not using it. You were using Lion, so you payed for it. Seems very fair to me. Don't be a cheapo. $20 is less than a meal in a fastfood restaurant where I live.

i dont understand what everyones problem with lion is, i think its the best OS i have ever used. I have not had one bug since i got my MBP. I was also very happy to hear that the new OS was only $20! where can you find an OS for so cheap? you want free upgrades then download Ubuntu Linux.

You guys are such complainers it isn't even funny.

Remember when OSes cost 129, windows ultimate cost 349?

TWENTY BUCKS, 2 pizzas. Apple users must be so incredibly poor these days, spend all their money on an over expensive laptop, complain when there's a really cheap OS upgrade.

Where is that dumb college girl meme when you need it.

Where are you if you can get 2 pizzas for $20? Man thats the price of one where I am.

19.90 is a reasonable price in this economy. I wouldn't complain a bit.

Nope, but if you should probably get used to it, rumor has it that We will see a new OS upgrade on a yearly basis.

They released Lion saying its better than SL . . .how it turned out?
For that we paid $30 .Fine. Now its time we should get a good update. All this things that they are giving in ML is nothing but tiny increments in the same Lion code. Why would somebody be willing to pay as upgrade no matter how cheap it is when it could've been an update. One year in software development is not a very long duration...

What's a "good update"? OS X is solid and stable and Apple has been continuously refining it for over a decade now. Instead of paying over a hundred dollars every 2-3 years for updates, it now cost 20-30 dollars for updates every year. Would you rather they had just witheld everything in Lion for another year and released it all now?

It was said earlier, but people really will complain about anything and everything. Seriously, if you want free crap go talk to Google.

That is OEM version for system builders only. not intended for retail use.

- see the big problem with windows is there is like 4 or 5 versions of windows 7. Wy can't microsoft just make one version and be done with it. Why would I need to choose between basic, home, home premium, professional, enterprise, or ultimate... to get features that should be standard in the OS...

Coming from a person who was a windows guy for over 20 years who switched to mac a couple of years ago, I can say from my own experience, Apple does it better. Hell when MS releases a new OS they usually charge $249.99 to $349.99 for it. At least Apple is charging a minimal fee, and why shouldn't they.

I for one look forward to it.

Welcome to the world of Apple.

Get ready to spend, and spend and spend.

Please don't say you weren't advised :)

Ripped off over $30? I'd feel ripped off if I had bought Windows Vista back then...now that's a ripoff for a system that didn't even work OOTB.

As someone who bought the x64 Ultimate discs for God-knows-what they cost at the time....REALLY? ARE PEOPLE GRIPING OVER A $20 OPTIONAL UPGRADE HERE??

----------

I'm not arguing that $20 isn't a great deal because it is. I just wish I knew last year how pointless it was to buy Lion for $30 when they would drop basically an updated version this summer $10 cheaper. I would have kept snow leopard and waited for this. You would think those with OSX Lion would get a $10 upgrade or something. I think the majority of users didn't upgrade to Lion and its benefitting them now. I guess the logical thing would be to just wait until next summers update.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but how is it $10 cheaper? You still need Lion in order to upgrade to Mountain Lion, no?

You needed Snow Leopard to get Lion, you couldn't just upgrade from Leopard straight to Lion and save the $30...

----------

Actually Windows 8 upgrade will cost $15.

Only if you buy it between now and release; normal, loyal Win7 users pay full price.

By contrast, if you buy a Mac between now and ML's release, the upgrade is free.

Agreed. Lion is what sold me on OSX being a viable operating system and alternative to Windows. I hated everything pre-Lion with a passion.

Different strokes, I guess.

Guessing the OP complains about .99 cent apps and $1.29 songs too?

even a total of $50 for both Lion and ML are an amazing price. I would pay $50 just for Lion. For a machine that cost over $1,000 and having IMHO the best operating system for $20-$30 is absolutely great! Don't spend over a thousand dollars on something and complain about a $30 program.

When i was a Windows user I use to like the fact that it would take a while for a new OS to kick in, for it gave me more time to make a transition or decision. However the cost of windows software was and is still much, in addition to the different versions which frustrated me why shouldn't we just all the features for one price! and again the Surface is proof of that.

When i moved to OSX it was a big transition i started off with good ol Snow Leopard which came with my iMac, however last year i was shocked to learn of another OSX version coming out but the price eased my concerns, this year i am getting used to the fact that a new OSX comes out every year.

My 2 cents: This is why Apple wins with its operating system and heres why:

A basic version of Windows may set you back about $250 when it first comes out. However Apple's OSX has only one version. Yeah sure there is a new OSX every year, but the cost dirt cheap, so in the time you own a version Windows operating you can have about 4 - 5 versions of OSX at the same cost.

This also gives apple upper hand over Windows releasing new features such as face book integration which may take windows another year or so achieve.

Why Apple looses

I hear a lot from this forum that Windows has longer shelf life in terms of updating software.

My concession is:

This may be true but most of the times when you update Windows software it launches havoc on your system, plus the annyoing driver updates. i find most of Apples updates can be made in the one place, however with OSX new way of updating OSX through the appstore it is another awkward transition for me, it also opens the possibilities for in app updating costs through iTunes.

Frankly, Lion was well worth it and I expect Apple to release updates like ML every year with the features it comes with. I'm much happier paying $30 or so in OS updates every year than paying $200 or more in OS software and receiving only virus and malware and idiotic service packs which add nothing to the end user's library.

On the other hand, no one is forcing you to get ML. Lion is very well made and you may as well use it.

is that what they're doing now?

tiger - april 2005
leopard - october 2007
snow leopard - august 2009
lion - july 2011
mountain lion - july 2012

are we getting another update next year for sure, or will it be every 2 years as its been historically? (vs 3 years for windows)

How do Windows Updates wreak havoc on your system?

Annoying driver updates?

And why is it cool for Apple to do updates in one place, but Windows handling it in Updates a bad thing?
