Subsequently, Algeria (politely) lodged a formal complaint (and were completely justified in so doing), shrugged with a distinct air of unsurprise when it was dismissed, and, while FIFA whinged ("you can't expect us to overturn a result"), the fierce international reaction, (including in the domestic media in West Germany, which was absolutely scathing) meant that FIFA felt compelled to ensure that this sort of thing could not happen again by scheduling matches at this stage of the competition to occur simultaneously.
Technically it can happen again if both teams just need a tie, however the chances of this type of mockery are reduced a lot by having games at the same time.

I had no idea there was a history behind this, thanks for the details.
From wiki: “After the match, the West German team went back to their hotel where they were met by furious spectators who threw eggs and other projectiles at them; the West Germans returned fire with water bombs. German and Austrian television commentators were so appalled at the match that they urged viewers on live television to stop watching the match and watch something else.”

I mean I don't generally watch football, only when it's the world cup, but damn, that's nuts.

Maybe Gareth Southgate will catch a clue about picking the right starting XI. Rashford and Foden brought the firepower. Now hopefully Rashford carries his international form back to his club when the WC is over.

USMNT has played well, maybe slightly wasteful in attack. Got to hang on for another 10 minutes or so.

USA makes it but gosh… this was insane.

Our forwards are a huge issue. They can’t finish it.

And the US is through. This team is playing so well defensively, but, as always, is having trouble scoring goals. We will see how they fare against the Dutch.

I wonder if this will get anyone to appreciate Gregg Berhalter. Since he was hired, people have been complaining about him and minimizing his successes. I doubt that will change.

Just saw USA v. Iran. That was nerve-racking!

Congrats to the team and Gregg for getting out of a tough group (all four ranked in the top-20) without a loss.

Congrats to the Iran squad for coming back and playing tough after the opening loss to England. Sure hope there are no repercussions for them (and especially their captain, Ehsan Hajsafi, who was brave enough to speak his mind while in Qatar) or their families.

Congrats to England on their group win.

Please pray that Christian Pulisic recovers from his testicular transplant in time for the game against Netherlands. Yikes, that was a hard knock! 😱

Here we go, I don't know who to support in this round, I am more excited for the next matches.
