I am so glad Tunisia won, the amount of hard play they did compare to the lazy play the French did, was well deserved.

Also, this is the first Arab country to Win against the French, I believe.

Wow, that Chavez goal was a beauty.

I was surprised that El Tri couldn't muster a third goal to put them through.

I was sorry.

However, two excellent games (well, excellent second half of games);anyway, I'm sorry to see that Mexico failed to qualify - and, by the narrowest and most heart-breaking of margins.

Shots on target would be a better tie breaker than yellow cards imo.

Agreed; it would be a fairer metric by far by which to measure a difference between teams on identical points, and one that would also - by measuring and rewarding attacking football - possibly serve to enhance, or improve, the game, or at the very least, give teams a motivation, or a reason, or reward, to want to play a more attacking game.

According to The Athletic:

FIFA is banking — literally — on it being a great change. An outline of what we’re dealing with:

  • A whopping 48 teams will make it, up from the normal 32. If you don’t make the expanded field, fire everyone on staff. There will likely be 16 three-team groups and a 32-team knockout round, which should deliver more drama.

  • Pregame PKs? Sure. FIFA is considering adding a bonus-point option to group-stage draws, which could include a pregame penalty shootout. Sign me up. It sounds so dumb but so amazing. Will this shootout matter? Who knows! I’m in.

  • Putting three teams in a group instead of four has a couple of consequences. With two teams advancing, the likelihood of a knockout round Cinderella decreases. But, a three-team group increases the possibility of collusion.

Three team groups will also serve to increase the price - or cost - of a single poor performance during the group stages.

Under the current system, any team - even the really good ones - can "afford" one shocker, one poor game, one game where they are defeated, especially if it is their first game - and they are still "cold" or haven't acclimatised or adjuested to playing together; they have two further games during which they can make good any deficits from a shocker of an opening game.

Sounds terrible to me, at first glance.

At some point you have to feel bad for Romelu Lukaku, after about the 5th squandered chance in the second half. Tragicomic stuff.

Morocco win Group F! Well done.

Well done Morocco for winning!

I missed half the games today, but ready for the next one, pretty sure Germany is out from the next stage even if they score.

I might be wrong about Germany.

Actually, no, I don't.

For this is the true test of a player who is supposedly a star.

Can you perform at the highest level? Can you deliver an outstanding performance - stay cool and composed and calm under pressure - when it really matters, when the burden of expectation (and hope) may weigh heavily on your shoulders, or elsewhere on your athletic frame?

Scoring against - let us say, to take an example - Fulham, on a wet Wednesday night, midway through winter in the Premiership, when your side already leads by two goals to nil, does not count, to my mind as the mark of a seriously impressive striker, one who can coolly take his chances - and make a difference to the game - when it matters.

The Costa Rica v Germany and Japan v Spain games offer some interesting permutations. At the moment Japan is beating Spain 2-1 so the result of the Germany game doesn’t matter, they go out in third place.

This might not be a popular opinion, but I am glad Germany is out.

Glad to see the Japanese go to the next stage! they just need to keep the score as is or add another.
