HD DVD?

DVD Studio Pro now supports HD DVD... now I don't know much about the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle, but is this HD DVD the same that Blu-Ray is competing with? Because Apple just joined the Blu-Ray consortium. I'm very confused.

From the DVD Studio Pro page:

For Playing Back HD DVDs
Macintosh computer with PowerPC G5
Apple DVD Player v4.6
Mac OS X v10.4.1

I guess 10.4.1 will be out soon as will be DVD Player v 4.6. (The version shipping with Tiger Gold is advertised as v. 4.5!) It also means, even the latest PB won't be able to play back HD DVDs!

Yeah I saw that too. This confirms support for the new format, although of course you'll need a (third party?) drive too.

So much for Apple using the video card to let the new Powerbooks run everything in realtime... If they come out with the g5 powerbooks right after I got this thing... GRRRR...

Oh wait:
"Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) or G5 processor; HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processor; authoring of HD DVDs requires a PowerPC G5 processor."

Phew...

These pro app upgrades are great, but Thinksecret and Appleinsider were saying there would be a dozen updates and new pro apps. The rumor-mill sites are a total joke. Except for MacRumors, of course.

The only joke here is calling macrumors a rumor-mill site. I can't even remember the last time they had a rumor all their own. All macrumors does now is report on other sites, which I still find useful since I don't visit those sites.

Will Tiger and QT 7 break FCP 4.5 and DVDSP 3 or Enhance Them?

Will Tiger and QT 7 break FCP 4.5 and DVDSP 3 or Enhance Them?

I want to know if my existing suite of applications will still work or work even better by simply adding Tiger and QT 7 to the mix. Anyone know if Apple said anything about this in the press conference?

I would have to assume so, since Tiger ships in 1-2 weeks (and Final Cut Studio doesn't ship until MAY).

But they didn't say...

The Final Cut Studio page is by far the best looking on the entire Apple site, in my opinion. Even got box is cool looking! Way to go Apple, making creative professionals happier each day. :D

bias killer

there was talk of a protools killer - but i think soundtrack pro may be more of a bias killer...peak and sound soap go for over a grand - soundtrack pro is $300.

From the looks of it, i feel SNDK PRO could take Peak on anyday...

Who would give this a negative review? This is an awesome software update. My new Panny cam and FCP5 will be linked as one.

FCP 5 finally goes native HDV! This is single-handedly the biggest new feature of FCP and way better support than iMovie, with its lousy transcoding to AIC. RT-Extreme also means you can edit HDV on lower-end Macs without it becoming frustrating.

yea ill take a AG-HVX200 if ya got one....
and its only 5~6K!

Final Cut Studio System Requirements
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) or G5 processor; HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processor; authoring of HD DVDs requires a PowerPC G5 processor.
512MB of physical RAM; HD features require 1GB of RAM or more (2GB recommended)
Mac OS X v10.3.9 or Mac OS X v10.4 (or later); Core Image Units and 16- and 32-bit float rendering in Motion 2 require Mac OS X v10.4 or later
Display with at least 1024 x 768 resolution
QuickTime 7 (or later)
DVD drive required for installation
DLT drive required for replication of DVDs authored in DVD Studio Pro 4
AGP Quartz Extreme graphics card
Motion 2 requires the standard graphics card found on any Power Mac G5 or iMac G5, a 1.25GHz or faster PowerBook G4 or a 1.25GHz or faster flat-panel iMac. Any of the following graphics cards is highly recommended: NVIDIA GeForce FX 6800 Ultra DDL, NVIDIA GeForce FX 6800 GT DDL (NV40), ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (RV M11), ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (R350) or ATI Radeon 9800 XT (R360).
4GB of disk space required to install all applications; additional 41GB required to install all optional templates, loops, content and tutorials (may be installed on separate disks)
Playback of HD DVDs authored in DVD Studio Pro 4 requires a PowerPC G5 processor, Mac OS X v10.4 and Apple DVD Player 4.6 (or later)

THAT IS A LOT OF CONTENT!

LIVETYPE??

As far as I can tell, the app LiveType is now gone. Can anybody find it? This was a great app since you could accomplish professional looking titles without the hardware requirements that Motion calls for. I know they just started shipping LiveType with FC Express, but is that the last of it?

nice! :D

now... to see what new features Shake 4 will bring... :D

edit>>

just saw that Shake 4 has a new node called MultiPlane. 3D layers baby!! w00t! Shake pwns j00 all!!

The distributed encoding in DVDSP is awesome! I've been asking for XGrid for iDVD for a while now. I have a 1Ghz G4 iMac and an 800mhz G4 iBook. I'd love to be able to use both processors for encoding DVDs.

May be time for me to upgrade to DVDSP. (Or I can just buy a G5 and get the speed that way)

SoundTrack Pro

Oh, I hoped that Apple will create Pro level audio editing application... Still there is nothing like Steiberg WaveLabs (Win) in Macinthosh world... Yes, there is ProTools, but that is tied to the proprietary hardware, and out of question. Peak is almost there, but still limited to 2 tracks only, and no montage possibilities...
SoundTrack Pro is clierly for video pros, who need to edit film audio. It's not for audio-only tasks...

Upgrading

I have all the current versions of the stuff thats in the FC Studio box, but I bought them separately (FCPHD, Motion, DVDSP3).

To upgrade, Apple offers you the choice of upgrading the apps individually (obviously the most expensive), upgrading if you have ONLY FCP (any version) and finally, upgrading to FC Studio if you already have the production suite.

My question is - if I already own the individual apps, will I be able to utilize the Production Suite upgrade path? Or did Production Suite come with special Production Suite specific serial numbers (thereby preventing upgrades for anyone who didnt buy the whole thing in one go)?

It would be cruel to have pay more for not buying Production Suite all in one go.

Opinions?

during the financial results call, they reiterated that PB G5 was the 'Mother' of all thermal challenges. Mother's day is May 8
Now that is a cool stretch of logic for a PB G5 this may :).

Not saying it's not possible, just impressed... I get called a lateral thinker but this beats me!

Nicely found :) I wonder if the HD DVDs are HD-DVDs, or todays DVDs with HD content using h264 (which some players can now play).
