LiveType Inside Final Cut Pro 5

AdamZ said:
As far as I can tell, the app LiveType is now gone. Can anybody find it? This was a great app since you could accomplish professional looking titles without the hardware requirements that Motion calls for. I know they just started shipping LiveType with FC Express, but is that the last of it?
I gotta believe that LiveType will still be included with the Final Cut Pro install. :)

Yes CONFIRMED. If you go to the technical specifications of FCP 5, LiveType is part of the package as is Compressor also. :)

I have all the current versions of the stuff thats in the FC Studio box, but I bought them separately (FCPHD, Motion, DVDSP3).

My question is - if I already own the individual apps, will I be able to utilize the Production Suite upgrade path? Or did Production Suite come with special Production Suite specific serial numbers (thereby preventing upgrades for anyone who didnt buy the whole thing in one go)?
I don't know. I've wondered the same about Adobe CS2, since I have all of the separate applications.

They said at the NAB press conference that any single FP version qualifies for the full suite upgrade deal.

FCStudio from Production Suite = $499 or from FCP =$699

At the Apple Store on the grey right hand column under "New to the Store" is the term "Upgrades for Pro Video Production". Clicking there explains all upgrade paths. One is from Production Suite for $499 OR FCP HD to Final Cut Studio for $699. :)

This seems to exclude other applications qualifying for a full upgrade. Seems like if we own more than one of the Studio applications we ought to be able to upgrade to Studio for $499. In my dreams anyway. :(

That appears to be the best and only deals for both commercial and academic buyers. No such link is at the Apple Educational Store. :(

Maybe this will change between now and when it all ships - I hope.

G5's Tommorrow?

I wouldn't be at the least bit surpised if G5's were announced tommorrow. After all, since when has Apple announced hardware on a Sunday?

And if new G5's are coming this month, what better time to announce it?

Educational software cannot be upgraded. You need the retail software to qualify for the upgrades.

The new features in Soundtrack Pro is going to piss off a lot of Logic Pro users. Several of the features have been asked for for years, and now a $300 app gets them first? They did the same thing with Garageband. If this kind of thing continues, there is going to be a mass defection from Logic to another alternative.

I don't know what features you are talking about, but I do know that there is a Logic 7.1 update coming out soon (check Apple's Online Store). Supposedly, it has some new features. Could those new features be any of the one's you are concerned with?

Fucanay has been going forum to forum trying to stir up anti-Apple sentiment on behalf of "disgruntled Logic users." I wouldn't take him too seriously! The 7.1 update is HUGE, and is being very looked forward to by most Logic users.

These pro app upgrades are great, but Thinksecret and Appleinsider were saying there would be a dozen updates and new pro apps. The rumor-mill sites are a total joke. Except for MacRumors, of course.

don't be stupid. think secret is the only one giving out reliable info time after time. if they weren't so good, they wouldn't be getting sued.

The professional user does not want a portable that can just run the program, It has to be able to use the program for which it is designed.

And in the world of NLE's you will always be comprimsing ability for portability when you are working on a laptop in the field. Expecting PowerBooks to perform on par w/PowerMacs is not realistic.

Example, working on project for client, editing final copy on plane from NYC to LAX, meet client, cannot author the HD DVD, give client the laptop instead, lose client for not being prepared, ...

One minor hole in your hypothetical situation. Try fitting the new software, plus your HD source footage, plus room for render files, plus room for the rendered HD-DVD on a laptops HDD. Unless you are working on a really, really tiny project it isn't going to fit. And, even if you made an HD-DVD what is the client going to play it back on?

It will be a couple of years before your hypothetical starts turning into a reality and by that time I sure hope Apple has a G5 PowerBook out there. ;)

Shake

Any chance of ever seeing an educational priced version of Shake ?

I want to learn it, and I'm a student but I can't afford to throw down $3000.00. ouch.

Since the lawsuit, Thinksecret is just making up garbage to keep the site going. It's been wrong about everything except for the obvious predictions. Hell, my mother could have predicted the upgrades that came out today.

You know, I was pretty happy to see that we were getting at least something updated in Logic 7.1. But then we see Apple's "Pro" Audio application getting passed up, yet again, by another audio app. It's not a matter of stirring up anti-Apple sentiment, I think Apple has done that plenty on it's own, especially with it's Logic user base.

For years Logic users having been asking for better audio editing and modernization of certain tools, and suddenly Soundtrack Pro is getting a lot of those features and they are nowhere to be seen in Logic. They pile on a bunch of plugins and call it an update. Not very "pro" to me.

And before you accuse me of being anti-Apple or anti-Logic, please note that I've never owned another brand of computer or another pro audio application. I've been a loyal user for years. But I now start to wonder where that loyalty has gotten me.

Pretty impressive stuff. I would still like to see some other features in FCP that I am not seeing right now in my quick review like adding multiple transitions automatically instead of just the default transition and ken burns effects. I would love to be able to make a slide show with stills as easily as in iPhoto/iMovie but allowing you to alter it in a pro way. I would also like to see network rendering. Maybe it's there but I'm not seeing it. However the native HDV work flow is enough by itself that I am purchasing this now. Tiger and all this new pro stuff. I'm excited.

Well, several things disappoint me with the latest release of FCP 5.0. Some of which are:

Filter sets. Having the ability to turn on or off certain filters in a sequence without having to load into the viewer each individual clip. This would also mean support for adjustment layers, as is present in AE and Photoshop.

Real-time Composite modes. Apple made no mention of Core-compatibility with FCP. Perhaps more light will be shed with Tiger's release.

TS reported up to 12 apps, but said not all would be stand alone apps. This is the list I put together that includes all the 2ndary apps:

Final Cut Pro 5
Compressor 2
LiveType
Cinema Tools 3
DVD Studio Pro 4
QMaster
Motion 2
Soundtrack Pro
Shake

PrimatteRT Keyer?
Final Cut Studio

That's 11 if you include the production suite. I'd say TS got it pretty close to the nose.

Given no hardware announcements today, I'm skeptical that dual-core G5s will find their way into the next Power Mac updates. It's looking like one of those under-the-radar updates. Expect the next PMs to top out at dual 2.7 ghz. No quads for at least another 4-5 months. :(

Yeah I saw that too. This confirms support for the new format, although of course you'll need a (third party?) drive too.

I was in the live chat last night and I thought one of the messages said that exisiting superdrives could play HD-DVD.

So much for Apple using the video card to let the new Powerbooks run everything in realtime... If they come out with the g5 powerbooks right after I got this thing... GRRRR...

Oh wait:
"Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) or G5 processor; HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processor; authoring of HD DVDs requires a PowerPC G5 processor."

Phew...

Well, Motion 2 specifically requires Tiger for it's use of Core Image units.

wow the requirements seem high, def. not using these apps with a mini! Apple needs to add more balls to their pbs soon cause alot of people would want to use this on their 17" pb.
Its about time apple used flash on their website. The website is so plain.

Heavy duty video editing and 3D work is not meant to be done on a laptop. In the future, sure, but then the top end stuff at that time won't meant to be done on a laptop either -- that is meant for workstations.

Yeah, but my question is, why doesn't FCP use Tiger for Core Image to make everything realtime, even on the powerbooks?

DVD Studio Pro HD (Dog Whistle edition)

OK, so it writes to a format no one can write to, but that's all going to change soon. Nice work, Apple! Now standardize the Blu-Ray burner and get Sony to make a $600 HD camcorder! 2007?
