HD requires G5,
That is why they need a G5 in a PB.

It says minimum 867 or faster for a powerpc g4. Isn't that what the powerbook has? Sooooo it should run. Just saying.

Holy Cow! Is this the new Transformers movie? As a little kid, that was one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons. I was always waiting for a live-action version!

I wonder if the HD DVDs are HD-DVDs, or todays DVDs with HD content using h264 (which some players can now play).
DVD Standards
-Author traditional DVDs using SD assets
-Author HD DVDs using SD and HD assets
-Burn discs containing both an SD and an HD project

I guess that answers my wondering...?

Also:
DLT drive (required for DVD-9 projects)

Does apple have dual layer hardware yet?

PowerBook G5

Playback of HD DVDs authored in DVD Studio Pro 4 requires a PowerPC G5 processor
Actually I'm not very interested in these apps (it's not my line of work), but I am waiting for a G5 (or equivalent) PowerBook and if Apple is releasing apps that no longer support the current G4's then it can't be too long.

DLT drive does not mean dual layer DVD drive. It means a DLT tape drive to enable you to take the DVD image (on tape) to a proper DVD replication facility.

The professional user does not want a portable that can just run the program, It has to be able to use the program for which it is designed.

Example, working on project for client, editing final copy on plane from NYC to LAX, meet client, cannot author the HD DVD, give client the laptop instead, lose client for not being prepared, cannot afford new laptop, lose job, get a job working late shift tech support for Dell, become manic depressive answering tech questions like 'Where is the any key?', get promoted at Dell to sales, finally commit suicide because of massive depression from people asking do I qualify for a 'free CD burner upgrade'.

Go to heaven, AKA 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino in the sky.

I love the boxes Apple has cooked up for this software. Very sleek, very professional.
And as a Final Cut Express user, my eyes are officially bugged. The multicam in FC5 is amazing, I can only hope that makes its way to FCE 4 in January. Meanwhile Soundtrack Pro, Motion and DVD SP all look to be incredible. I only wish I had moula to buy Final Cut Studio. Or a real use for it outside of fun projects with friends...

OK nice with great software........

But as what happend at MWSF the PB did not get updated utill a few days later..........so maby the same will happen to the PM  :D

DVD Studio Pro now supports HD DVD... now I don't know much about the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle, but is this HD DVD the same that Blu-Ray is competing with? Because Apple just joined the Blu-Ray consortium. I'm very confused.

Read my post on page 2 of this thread. Or,
read the 5th paragraph of this Apple press release.

FCP 5 finally goes native HDV! This is single-handedly the biggest new feature of FCP and way better support than iMovie, with its lousy transcoding to AIC. RT-Extreme also means you can edit HDV on lower-end Macs without it becoming frustrating.
I agree. I can't wait. My days and nights of transcoding m2t to DVCProHD will soon be over! This will also make printing to D-VHS and miniDV (HDV) tape much easier (for the purpose of saving master prints).

Yeah, maybe two or three more years at the most. iBooks had G3s for a long time even after G4 only applications were out. I suppose people will say, "but PowerBooks are the pro line and they should be up to the task of running all the pro software." PowerBook G4s will still run DVDSP 4. They just won't be able to (according to the information cited) avail the HD authoring features, and (apparently) they won't be able to play back HD-DVD content.

Thanks for the clarification.

On the tech specs page, they also say:
Output Formats
- DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, Double-layer media
- Double-layer media support
Guess that is more relevant?

I believe they are making one...

But that looks like a honda(?) ad I was once sent by email (I don't live in the US - maybe someone else will know?). I looked for it but don't have it anymore. There are a few similar transformer-style ads, one with a guy beating up a photocopier.

Nope, it's not! It's a production still from the recent Citroen advert...

Although according to Empire magazine the live action Transformers movie is due 17th November '06, and is being produced by Micahel Bay [Armageddon, Amityville re-hash] so may, or may not depending how you look at it, be worth a look!!!

Who would give this a negative review? This is an awesome software update. My new Panny cam and FCP5 will be linked as one.
The wonderful few of us who can't afford a $1200 software suite, and of course, those land-locked windows users ;)

now with all these updates i'm a bit upset that yesterday i spent almost £900 (us$ 1700) on my damn car....

As others have pointed out, only burning HD DVDs is said to require a G5. However, that system requirement may be incorrect. Recently I read a benchmark article which showed that a 1.6 Ghz G4 is like a 1.4 Ghz G5. The big advantages of the G5 come from the massive system bus, the ability to use DDR and of course the higher clockspeed. But the 8641 Motorola chips I linked to accomodate a 667 Mhz bus and they should start at 2 Ghz. So they should be able to burn DVDs. The big advantage of the G4 is the minimal power requirements and thermal challenges.

However, no that I think about it, the very fact that the Motorola website exists means that for some reason Apple is not imposing secrecy on Motorola, which makes me suspect has opted not to go with those chips.

it's actually a really TRULY AWFUL Citroen advert that runs here in sunny Britain... the last time i was watching TV it actually persuaded me to switch it off - and i haven't watched any TV in three weeks!

hopefully when i have the courage to turn it back on that advert will be long gone!

Freescale do have an alternative to the hot G5's, and the new G5's are getting cooler, so it might not be so long. IBM, Freescale and Apple have had plenty of time to work on this.

All Apple have been saying is that it would be difficult to get the current G5 desktop/server chip into a very small PowerBook, but they haven't said anything about using an alternative chip, which (in my opinion) is more likely.

I certainly hope so.

This is what I find most exciting:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/quicktours/native_HDV.html

Of course had this been out sooner it would have saved me hundreds of hours of work! :) I'm glad it's coming soon though (next month).

FCP 5 also supports P2 cards, in anticipation of the debut of Panasonic's new variable frame rate HD cam. NAB 2005 is shaping up to be a stellar show.

I don't personally use any of these software.

A staff member at my local Apple Store uses Final Cut Pro. He was impressed by the update. His only complaint was that he just purchased the software three months ago and would now have to purchase it again. Although I mentioned that at least he would enjoy the employee discount.

Is there a difference in the Academic version of the Final Cut Studio and the normal one? If not, then I may have a new perchase coming up.

Thanks.

Nah, theres no difference. I got fcp3 that way. Now I have to pay full price. Also you should pay more attention in those english classes.
