Dude, Avid media Composer cost $200,000! FCP started a revolution. It allowed Walter Murch to edit Cold Mountain on 3 PowerMacs and 2 PowerBooks for a fraction of what ONE Avid station would have cost!

Version 5 of Avid Media Composer was $120K. Now the Adrenalin HD is 25k to 40k depending on upgrades. But, you are correct that the reason people are migrating to FCP is price and portability. Xsan and FCP 5 is going to make it hard for Avid to justify these prices, even with a better product. Another reason companies are switching is Avid has been a complete ass over the years. They never listen to the end user and EVERYTHING is propriety driven. I own both but I can't wait to ditch my Avid.

ya, but avid express pro is only slightly more expensive than FCp, and it uses existing Unity (SAN) and OMF media files. that's one reason our editors are now looking to stay with avid - and we've done a lot of work with apple to make a go of it with FCp for 24fps animated feature work. they're getting there, but avid is there.

What problems?

A very specialized field. 24p feature animation. Pixar? Sony? Dreamworks? I would guess that the ATI x800 just isn't going to cut it.

Avid on the PC is better. What touble are you talking about with FCP? Have you used FCP with Shake? I could see that being a strong tool for final composites. My point is that FPC is not there but is very quickly catching up and not only in editing. Much cheaper than Discreet Logic. Although they now have Toxic. I digress. :D

my order for both an upgrade from fcp, and a full version both shipped today, despite being listed as before or on 6/15/05 until now. it was ordered somewhere in early may.

both to arrive tomorrow! i'd expect most people will get them at the same time. seems like 10.4.1 was what the wait was all about

Various reader reports state that early orders for Final Cut Pro Studio began being shipped out yesterday. Previous expected ship dates were estimated at early to mid-June. The new suite of applications, announced April 17 at NAB 2005, include Final Cut Pro 5, Motion 2, SoundTrack Pro, and DVD Studio Pro 4 and retails for $1299 ($699 Edu.).

Yes I ordered mine about 9:30pm lastnight when I saw it was shipping.

Just a few :)

Install totals 30GB and takes about 55 minutes.
Apple recommends doing a software update before installing.
I noticed DVD Player 4.6 is also now available in the software updates as well.

7 Discs plus 2 for the tutorials

mmmm, education discount. Doesn't get any sweeter then that!
Except that you're only renting it until the next upgrade...Academic version is not upgradeable and you end up buying the full version eventually and loosing the rent you paid on academic. IMO, academic plus full is more expensive than full plus upgrade...seems like there should be some break for being a student learning a product you may use the rest of your career, not more expensive... :(

the first one. ;)

FCp 4.5 had lots of trouble cutting reels. rather large delays in the interface after 4,000 objects or so. the version 5 betas fixed a lot of those problems, but avid express pro was released in the meantime, so the momentum shifted. it's kind of a devil-you-know vs. devil-you-don't-know situation.

we're not currently using motion, so the video card isn't that important to us. i often use shake (mostly on the comandline via scripts) for deliveries/conversions/slating, but all the production work is done on linux boxes.

Final Cut Pro now unlocks Quicktime pro 7 automatically for you. No separate Serial Number is needed.

That's a nice change - although minor. But 7 DVDs? How much of that is apps and how much is content?

DVD Player Update 4.6

DVD Player 4.6 delivers added support for DVD Studio Pro 4 authored HD DVDs. It is recommended for all users of DVD Player.

Key Updates include:

Additional support for playing DSP 4 authored HD DVD folders from DVD discs and hard drives.
Additional support of discs with both SD and DSP 4 authored HD content.
Improved Global Player settings.
Improved usage for last play and disc info dialogs.

.... HD DVDs! Holy poop.

I think you're mistaken. I've upgraded several academic versions of apple products - FCP2-3-4, and just recently, the academic version of logic pro 6 to retail 7. You just have to purchase the retail version, and it will upgrade the academic version. There is really no difference between academic and retail, other than the splash screen and licensing agreement.

It was a little bit late in the day but mine is shipping as well. Now I just need to clean off all of my projects so that I can do an update without messing up something.

My install took 20 GB and about 1 hour to install.

There is 3 Content DVD's, Motion, Soundtrack, DVD SP, and Studio Install (Installer) And Two tutorial Discs

The Quicktime to QTPro was a nice little feature.

Soundtrack Pro is very nice looking :)

The current version of media composer, adrenalne, costs around $25,000. Putting together a final cut pro editing bay suitable for use on a feature film costs pretty close to that, not only that but even though fcp 4 was out at the time, they had to use fcp 3, because 4 was too buggy. I prefer to listen to the facts, rather than apple's clever marketing, and cold mountain was a horrible movie too.

I just ordered it tonight. I'm very excited about it. I'm interested in knowing if anyone has any hands on experience with it yet. It seems like lately Apple has been releasing software with some initial bugs and that makes me nervous.

now all i need is to be able to afford it. at least i get the EDU price :)

but then need a dual 2.7ghz PMG5 with 8gb ram

the 1.25ghz PBG4 with 2gb isn't quite enough

I know FCP academic at least used to be upgradable, but I thought I read somewhere that Motion Academic IS NOT upgradable. Can anyone refute or confirm this?
