Final Cut is not the only program in need of an overhaul or update for us laptop & desktop folks.
We have been feed peanuts for some time now. Most all attention has been placed on iPhone, Apple TV and related development.

I am experimenting with Premiere Elements 9 currently. Now I can make my 1st blu-ray disk. Like the control I have over AVCHD editing instantly.
A little buggy but at least someone out there is developing apps.
Apple does not seem interested in that right now.

BTW FCE is my favorite program. That's the skill level where I am at. Some day I will move up. The question is what program will that be?

it has some bugs but man the integration with all the other apps especially with PS and AE is fenomenal to say the least. and the blue-rays look very good even in SD. I just made a SD Blue-Ray with almost 6 Hrs of SD Footage and it looks nice. oh and it played in avery player I put it in. I went to Walmart and best buy and try most of their entertainment setups. No problems.

Wow, I don't even use FCP, but the message this sends is truly worrying. :(

Right now, I only feel lucky I'm not a victim as a photographer using Aperture, but I wonder if I'm next. What's going on with Apple's professional product lines. :S It's all consumer these days.

Indeed. This is how the kind of divide in attention from Apple's side becomes apparent to end-users. Apple only get away with it since they still have a strong foothold in the industry, since earlier days.

I say go for Light Room. I was in the same situation and said well I do not see Adobe making iToys on the other hand apple seems to be all about that and forgetting whom made them who they are.

Until one of the other NLE's comes through with some groundbreaking features and much better performance I will be happy with the current state of the suite. Yes, it is a total bummer that we won't see new features for awhile, but I am very happy with the stability of my system right now. A company that I edit for on a regular basis uses the newest version of Premiere on Windows machines, and it is decent, but not as smooth as FCP. It crashes occasionally and parts of the interface are just clunkier than FCP. Multicam editing in Premiere is pretty awful. Beta versions of CS5.5 are already out there and that should help fix some of the stability issues though.

Is it not groundbreaking features the fact that Premiere pro Plays 4 layer of 4k Footage in real time with filter?. would you want 28k to be satisfied?

About 15min? Seriously Premiere/FCP etc all have a very standard NLE interface but their menus/drop downs are different and that will take time to become familiar with.

it is not as hard as some would like you to believe even though they have not tried it.

Glad I jumped ship from Final Cut to Avid after Final Cut 4. MC5 blows final cut studio 3 out of the water and now even more delays with final cut, what a joke of an application it will be compared to the competition.
Avid gets it right, all the do is post production. I'm not worried Avid is gonna let Media Composer fall by the way side while they work on consumer devices. Pros go to Avid.

there is not FInal Cut Studio 3 and there will never BE, they will probably will call it Final Cut Studio 4 in 2012 that is.
man that is a long time in the tech world. by then Adobe would be many moons ahead.
"It’s highly unlikely that the next studio release will happen in early 2011, or even 2011."
I did not make this up
go here to see it for yourself

The BBC just bought 2,000 Adobe Premiere systems.

right in your face. ¿te llenaste chucho a te guiso un huevo?
¿Cómo lo quieres estrellado o Chapaleado en la puerta? LOL :D

It seems everyday there is a new multi-page tirade of "professionals", who are also apparently so immature, as to think that a faster pace of iOS related updates = not just a slower pace for Mac software products, but the END of them in some way.

I wonder how the irony of that affects those working at Apple? Probably a daily morning chuckle over coffee, before getting to work.

Engineer 1, "Hey did you see this? Another thread on Macrumors about the "end" of the Mac."

Engineer 2, "What else is new."

Engineer 1, "They seem pretty serious. Although for people who apparently buy $3000 computers and $1000 software, they can't spell any better than 13-year-olds."

Engineer 2, "Because they are 13 year olds. People that use Final Cut spend their day using it...not bitching about it on Macrumors."

Well said. Those of us who remember the lean years of Mac OS 8 and 9, when the company had zero profits for over a decade, realize that adding in the "iCandy" part of the business generates tons of cash. And this is used to develop things like OS X, the pro apps, etc.

I love how much rumour flourishes because of Apple's secrecy.

Oh, it's not just that. Compressor is utter garbage for H.264 encodes. I never use it. FFMPEG or even Handbrake not only give me more options than Compressor, but also work faster and wind up with higher quality to boot!

Why blame Compressor for Apple's crappy H.264 codec implementation? It's the codec to blame - not Compressor. Compressor kicks ass for making an H.264 using an x264 QuickTime component.

Marcus said:
I do like QT7 and I hate QTX

I'm assuming you mean you have the QuickTime X Player. QuickTime X is used throughout 10.6 to deal with anything QuickTime related and when QTX itself can't handle things it passes it back to the QT7 bits installed as well. The player is just a whole different ball of wax.

13 year olds??? you must be Kidding. ! !

I do not know any 13 year old whom owns anything close to a mac or FCS. I do not know where you get your info from.

in regards to the pace of pro apps development is concern. Do not let your funboy fever blind you from the facts. Apple is behind. The Last REAL Major Release was in 2007. and it looks like we will not see the next one till 2012. if that it is not slow development for you, your must be ... well lets leave it to the imagination of the reader. just in case you do not know how is apple behind. For starters. NO SATA III, No Blue-Ray Authoring nor Playback, No USB 3.0, No 64 Bit Apps... Want More?

Call me whatever you want but the fact remains ...

Thanks for the clarification of your post. I too make a living from editing on a daily basis ... I guess I might have to get out more and see what's going on ;)

Cheers.

apple is way too busy with their iToy to pay attention to what we say. nor they care. I am starting to believe.

I think what you mean is: They aren't updating things the way I want when I want so they are stupid and lazy.

Dissing something that has been released is one thing, but dissing unfounded rumors from a site that has a .5% reliability and got a major detail like the end of one of the alleged key teams a year ago totally wrong, really?

guess what I have to go and test it in a stand alone blu-ray player because the freaking OSX the "best OS in the World" by stevo Jobs' account that is. will not play it.

so it is game over that Jobs didn't want to go through months of song and dance so you could play a disc designed for screens 30" and up on your little 15" laptop.

As for authoring blu-rays, yes you can. it requires 3rd party software and an external drive but it can be done. My company does it on a weekly basis

Apple has made it clear that they are a Consumer Company now and they are in for the money.

They were never not a Consumer Company and were never not in it for the money. Just like every other hardware and software company including your precious Adobe who love to jack up prices on updates because they know they have a captive audience. particularly with photoshop and illustrator. So get off the high horse. As for the 'disguise' comment. If anyone is disguising that they are just in it for the money it is Apple. They don't release half baked products and then shrug when it breaks. They actually created programs like the Genius Bar, Training etc. They don't give into companies like NBC that wanted to charge $5 an episode for shows and would love to do it again now but for rent not own.

I too wish apple would go back to being apple Computer.

Apple will go back to being just desktops and notebooks when the world does. Which will be never. Smartphones, tablets etc, this is part of our future. Get used to it.

Maybe the best future for FCP is for Apple to sell it to somebody who'll nurture it, not co-opt or eliminate it. Otherwise, the future could be Premiere and Media Composer.

Is FCP total ***** right now. No it is not. Which is why THE name in film editing uses it. Why major studios in the US and UK are banking their entire digital workflow on it. Why tv shows are using it. Can you say the same about Premiere and Media Composer.

The guy is Stingy.

which is why he had an 8 figure salary a year. why they haven't opened any new stores in months, why they aren't hiring scads of new employees

although I would say 64bit it is coming soon. it has to they have been bragging about osx 64 bit for ages yet their top end apps (their pride) are still only 32 bits.

yeah shame on you Apple for not releasing 64 bit apps before you have a chance to thoroughly debug your 64 bit OS. You denied us the right to all those possible bugs that would shut down our $1000 a day offices.

if there is a difference it does not really matter to stevo because they rotate and pull resources from wherever necessary to complete the task with most priority. and apparently FCS is at the end of the list.
And you have been working at Apple for how long to know that.

Never I bet. You are trusting a site that name dropped a dead software and has Zero credibility.

Of course he is going to say it will be awesome, I am surprised he did not say more. he has to lie for the stock holders

lying to the stock holders is a serious charge. That could get him kicked out. You really think stingy Stevo is going to risk his fat calf.

If he says it will be awesome, he believes that folks will agree.

to give us hope and make us buy it so he can make more money.

yeah cause you will have to buy it sight unseen with no details.

I do not see Adobe making iToys

Adobe doesn't make hardware.

But lets not forget their Flash Mobile projects, all their fuss about getting Flash on those iToys and that whole iphone convertor stuff.

Your blessed saints are kissing up to the cash cow as well.

there is not FInal Cut Studio 3 and there will never BE,

That's a rather idiotic comment. so what if they don't put a number on the package. This is still the 3rd iteration of the package. Thus folks will call it FCS3 to differentiate it from the previous

they will probably will call it Final Cut Studio 4 in 2012 that is.

yeah and who the F is Philip Hodgetts and why is he any more reliable than the idiots at Hardmac. He's some production guy turned blogger who eats up whatever lame ass sites post as their tabloid 'facts'. Certainly not some Apple Exec with the means to know what he's talking about

Nope. You have misread his post. What he said was that Apple does not update their computer products as well and as frequently as their competitors. I am surprised this thread even received as many posts as it did. I thought all FCS users already migrated elsewhere.

Can you say the same about Premiere and Media Composer.

yeah and who the F is Philip Hodgetts and why is he any more reliable than the idiots at Hardmac.
The ignorance alone in those two statements speaks volumes.

In the big scheme of things Avid is still the gold standard for NLEs. Yes, FCP has taken a large chunk of Avid's market share, especially in the lower and middle tiers, but Avid is still the one to beat in part because of legacy, in part because it does some important things better than FCP and in part because the changes Avid has made in past few years are dang near jaw dropping.

W/regards to Philip Hodgetts, he is very respected in post production circles and has over 25yrs experience in the industry, unlike Hardmac. Also unlike Hardmac Philip never claims to have 'inside sources' and when he speculates about FCP he makes it clear that that is all he is doing and that his speculation is based on publicly available info. If you can resist the impulse to bash someone you obviously know nothing about you might actually find yourself learning a few things from him. Between the blog, podcasts, books and speaking engagements there are ample opportunities for people to what he has to say.

FCP was updated a year ago. Apple has stated already that they're hard at work on a new version. According to Apple, it will be very impressive. Apple has yet to announce an actual deadline, so if they're missing any deadlines, it's their own internal one(s) and we don't know what those are.

This is Pro-grade, industry-standard software, folks. It doesn't get updated every month. Meanwhile, for all the BS about Apple only caring about their "iToys" (that just so happen to dictate the pace of change in nearly the entire industry), Snow Leopard is getting constant updates, in fact all we keep hearing about are new seeds to developers.

The HardMac story is bogus.

By the way, have you noticed the powerful editing tools available to users of Apple mobile devices? Just a few years ago stuff like this cost a small fortune and required a fair bit of training. The stuff I'm able to do with photos on an iPhone 4 is pretty impressive, to say the least. Just take a gander at the iPhone 4 photos section on MR. Thanks to Apple, of course. Interesting ....

But it won't be a true "Pro" product unless I can author blu-ray on it. We will see. I know, just because Acer, Dell and Compaq have blu-ray options, and it is fully supported by Adobe, doesn't mean its made it to mainstream yet. Fisher Price also has not adopted it in some of their toy computers yet either.

The BBC just bought 2,000 Adobe Premiere systems.

And yet their own film school still teaches Final Cut.

What is unclear in the press releases is what branch(s) of the BBS is using Premiere. It is one thing to say the BBC but it could be merely BBC news and not the departments producing the various tv shows, mini series etc. They could be using Final Cut and/or Avid and numbering the same if not more than BBC News.

I think the Hardmac article is crap, but I also think that a major FCP rewrite is taking longer than Apple anticipated (though for not exactly the same reasons Hardmac brings up). As others have said, the mentioning of Shake (which was EOL'd in '06 even though they kept selling it until '09) and a planned 2010 release date are big red flags that the article is less than reputable, IMO.

Phillip Hodgetts has a great blog post speculating about the state of FCP and I think his insights are significantly more valuable than what Hardmac has to say.

Lethal

I agree, it's a very good article, and seems to be a lot more on target than the whining chorus.

To quote a key phrase from this article: "What if Apple – since they have to rewrite much of Final Cut Pro – decided to not just do a “faster horse” rewrite but rethink what the NLE should and could be?"

So Apple has strong competition to go against - and nobody wants a so-so release.

And if nothing works out, the article states that Adobe Premiere Pro is really good software - and its integration into the Adobe suite is good.

But I expect a really well thought out new Final Cut Pro/Final Cut Studio release. Later, but better.

I just don't see why everyone lends so much credence to these, obviously flawed, rumors. The gullibility around here is off the charts. Oh well... some folks are just ultra-paranoid I guess.

Either way, like I said before, use what works for you: Vegas, Media 100, Premiere, FCS, MC5, Smoke, whatever. No reason to hang old to "old" stuff when there are a multitude of options. Do something other than cry though. The rampant whining is exhausting!

Anyway, FWIW, this article just hit today:

http://www.macworld.com/article/154470/2010/10/final_cut_trouble_not_so_fast.html

And relax. The sky is not falling.

FCP was updated a year ago.
It was a relatively minor bump hence the big price cut.

Apple has stated already that they're hard at work on a new version.
Of course they said that. What else are they supposed to say when Avid and Adobe have been releasing impressive upgrades the past few years?

According to Apple, it will be very impressive.

No one is expecting it to, but a major upgrade every 24 months or so is customary and the last major upgrade was in 2007. The minor release in '09 was basically a .5 update. Color got some long over due bug fixes, Compressor got a couple of minor features, after 5 years DVD SP is still at version 4... FCP got a few nice under the hood fixes and a couple nice additions to the ProRes family, but when featured upgrades are a big timecode window and the ability to color code tabs you know that there's really not much to write home about, IMO.

Meanwhile, for all the BS about Apple only caring about their "iToys" (that just so happen to dictate the pace of change in nearly the entire industry), Snow Leopard is getting constant updates, in fact all we keep hearing about are new seeds to developers.
Leopard was officially delayed to get the iPhone out the door on time, many people have speculated that further OS development was delayed again to get the iPad out the door on time, Randy Ubillos (who is basically the father of Premiere and FCP) no longer just does FCP but also both iMovies (desktop and iDevice), and last year some support and development guys from the ProApps team got released. Apple's priority has obviously been on gaining a strong foothold in the fledgling 'mobile computing' (for lack of a better term) market than it has been on their ProApps where there is not nearly as much growth potential. That's neither here nor there, IMO, that's just the way it is.

Work on the OS gets delayed which means work on the ProApps gets delayed because an app like FCP is heavily dependent on things like the video underpinnings of OS X (QuickTime) being good to go. It's like construction, if laying the foundation of the building gets delayed the whole process gets delayed even if the plumbers, electricians, and dry wallers are all ready to go.

By the way, have you noticed the powerful editing tools available to users of Apple mobile devices?
Yes, we've noticed how much R&D is going into the iDevices and iOS which is a big reason why threads like these exist.;)

This is more proof that apple is completely abandoning the pro market in computers and software.
The fact that they are reducing it to target the "prosumer" is more proof of that fact. Apple has complete abandon the core that kept them going during those bad years.

There is no "fact" that that is what they are doing. There is only opinion and speculation. Apple could release a dumbed down prosumer app or they could release a pro app that breaks away from decades of standard NLE conventions or they could release an app that looks and feels the same but is all new code under the hood. The only people who know for sure are keeping their mouths shut.

I am going to say more proof that apple has abadon the pro market completely.

The rather poor and long over due update to the Mac Pro. FCS has gone from the industry standard and leading software to pretty crappy compared to the 2 alternatives. It is massively outdated and over due for an upgraded.

Lets face it it is just another piece of evidence showing Apple no longer cares about its core of people who kept them going during the hard times. That group is seems is leaving Apple is great numbers.
Lee who is someone in that industry is considering it. His entire company (big firm that does this work) is considering switching over to windows platform due to Apple no longer being competitive, over priced and outdated.

All Apple has to do is announce that FCP/studio is going true 64bit, it's coming out in the next six months and we love you. (Okay maybe not the last part but I'm needy)

Seriously stop with the shroud of secrecy already about software you know will sell itself! I understand keeping new hardware under wraps but this is a targeted suite of software that loyal customers will buy upon release. Just throw them a bone already.

you got it right. ! ! !

Seriously, the only thing Apple will be buying is some iToy technology and thats its. If you haven't noticed they already crapped on Shake so you want them to screw up Nuke, Scratch, Mari and the rest? However, hell will freeze over before the "new Apple" will invest on anything pro. Realistically there is no chance Apple buying anything from Foundry or Assimilate. Apple has almost killed FCS and if they are going to wait all the way to 2013 before introducing a real major revision then FCS will be buried and forgotten before that day comes. Its very very unfortunate but the future of pro moving image software under wings of Apple doesn't seem very bright to me. Its almost as if Apple is trying to devalue the Mac on the eyes of pro users so they can get out of pro segment and target all their resources on iToys.

Nothing but the truth here. Look at how many iToy related companies has apple bought, acquire or license their technologies recently. and for the pro apps. NADA, Zero, Zip, Nishta. not even a decent update. the last one was a band aid. or a SUCKER for the suckers to keep them shush.

NO I Am NOT a DOG .! ! !

Are you calling us starving DOGS?. I do not know about you but I do not think I fall in that category. and It would take more then 64 bit apps to make me go back to apple. FYI that is not the only thing they are behind with.

It's a common expression? Every post I've made is in defense of frustrated users so I'm not sure how that could be taken otherwise...
