Blimey, I didn't know the plans were so pricey in the US - the cheapest here on contract (UK) is £30 which is about $45.

No way I'd pay more than double that to get the iphone - and I'm in work.

I'd say dump the phone and save up for a car.

I actually have a car, it's just that I wanted to save up for a Mustang but idc really too much for it. As long as I can drive

That was just an example which is why I threw the whole car predicament in there:p

Idk if I can trust Apple from what i've heard though. Would Apple give me a replacement up front right away if I came in with a broken one? I know they don't cover theft/loss so I gotta be extra careful.

And if I bought my iPhone from Best buy, can I get the Apple Care $70 at anytime?

Best Buy works for my company, and I wouldn't trust them. I never had a problem with Apple Care at all, but they don't cover damage or theft. Best Buy also can't fix it anyways, they have to sent it to Apple for repair jobs. If you're worried about breaking it, get the Otter Box. It's bulky, but it takes a beating. You can get Apple care anytime with in the year warranty also.

Okay, since you have EDGE, pay the $175 termination fee. DON'T RETURN THE PHONE. Then unlock it for T-Mobile, as long as you haven't upgraded to 2.2.1. You can still use it on the $5.99/mo TZones plan, and it's got the great iPhone UI. That's my personal suggestion. If it has 2.2.1... Pay the ETF, then sell it on eBay for $500. :p Either way, it's a win-win situation.

No man..I'm sticking with AT&T. There have been many reported problems with unlocking the iPhone with T-mobile in the past and I'm not doing it. Paying $100 a month for it is not really a big deal anyway since I'm using allowance.

Yeah and AT&T seems to have better coverage and a lot more coverage for 3G than T-mobile. I still prefer T-mobile's plans but hope to see price drops in the future for plans on AT&T.

Like I said it's bulky, but in my line of work I need something that can take a beating. It still fits in my pocket also without a problem.

A case won't guarantee that it will still work. Plus, I never drop my stuff and I've got insurance from Best Buy plus Apple Care on top of those. Also, I think that Otter Box is kind of ugly.

A co-worker dropped it from 10 feet in the air (working on a pole) on the street, and his iPhone still works. To me that's saying something about the case. A lot of people on here have that case and love it.

There's a guy in my history class who has it and it fell out of his pocket and the glass shattered...

NO case is 100% reliable. I prefer my Incase Slider and like I said...I NEVER drop my things.

True, but you're friend is the 1st bad story I have ever heard about that case. About 5 people at my work now have that case, and we work in manholes, on polls, and our work trucks have junk falling inside all the time. That case has stood up to the betting. When I 1st went to the at&t store, the sales guy had that case and threw it on the floor hitting the wall, the phone was 100% fine.
If you "NEVER" drop your things why do you need the Best Buy insurance?

I'm sure that case provides the best protection but a guy like me is always careful with his things.

I need the Best Buy insurance because it covers drops and ANY damage to the phone, besides water damage...which is why I don't need that Otter Box case and I have the Incase Slider for extra protection which I like the look of.

To each his own?

Final Decision...going back to T-mobile

I've finally decided that this phone is just too expensive and it's smarter for me to go back to T-mobile where I don't have to pay my bill because my mom will include me in her family plan and then I'll get the iPod Touch.

Sure the iPod Touch won't have internet access everywhere and I'll have to carry two devices at one but it'll save me a lot of money ($2400+ per year = RIP OFF)

So yeah, I'll be downgrading to the iPod Touch and getting the Curve 8900 with T-mobile. I really like the iPhone and would love to keep it but these monthly bills are just out of my budget.

Just cancel you AT&T contract pay the ETF, and unlock the phone and use it on Tmobile. Thats what I've done, and my iPhone is working perfectly, and I'm paying only $5.99 for unlimited data. I don't know of what problems you are talking about with unlocking, but your best bet is to unlock it for Tmobile.

Whey do you call it a rip off? If your family was with ATT you can add the iPhone to the family plan also. Thats 9.99 plus 30.00 data plan with unlimited MM to ATT users. If they weren't you'll be paying a similar fee to T-Mobile. You pay a plan for the minutes, and have to pay a data plan also. The only plus with T-Mobile is that unlimited sms is included with T-Mobile data plan. Something AT&T should be doing in the first place.

$2400+ per year? what are you talking about.. even with your insurance of $15 and your $83 a month bill the total comes out to $1176. Not cheap but also not $2400.

Do what you want to but being 17.. what else are you going to spend your money on? I thought that it would be smart to do this too so I actually got rid of my iPhone and switched to a Sony Ericsson. What do I have now? An iPhone 3G. Why? Because nothing else compares to it.

It's $2400 for 2 years and $1200 for one year I meant if you include federal taxes on the BASIC plans.

You can go and enjoy your iPhone because I'll be getting an iPod Touch which is the iPhone without the phone/cellular network, camera(sucks anyway), and GPS (which I never use). I'm not even on the road much so it's a no brainer.

I'll get either a simple phone or a Curve 8900 without the data plan or rebate and use my allowance to get an iPod Touch. Plus, I'll be included in my family's family plan that has 1000 minutes/unlimited weeknight and weekend with unlimited texting. So I will pay NO monthly charges.

Seriously, I don't wanna be LOCKED with AT&T and pay $75 minimum per month and that doesn't include taxes.

I can get the same features on the iPod Touch and I always have Wi-Fi in my area whereas 3G is limited even more around the globe.

This is a smart decision to make. Enjoy your iPhone.

I guess another good thing about the iPod Touch is that it actually has more internal memory than the iPhone.

An 8GB iPhone came with 7.1GB and a 16GB came with 14.6GB.

Whereas an iPod Touch 8GB comes with well....8GB and same with the 16GB

iPod Touch also has a faster processor and displays apps smoother and better than iPhone does. Plus it has a longer battery life than the iPhone due to all of the phone features and cellular network on standby.

So I'll be returning the iPhone 3G for full price tomorrow, canceling my contract, going back to T-mobile and getting a Curve 8900 and buying an iPod Touch.

Uhh no, all devices aren't actually 8GB or whatever they say. My iPod touch is 7.1, and my iPhone is about the same too. You can talk bad about it all you want, you will want one in the future. My old phone died, and I wanted an iPhone but I got the G1 instead, I still couldn't appease myself, and got an iPhone through a special Best Buy promotion, and gave the G1 to my mom.

Just found out that I gotta pay $205 to return the phone because hey say it's actually say it's outside the 30-day warranty. :/
-And that's with the restocking fee

So I'll be returning the iPhone 3G for full price tomorrow, canceling my contract, going back to T-mobile and getting a Curve 8900 and buying an iPod Touch.
So which is it? a Full refund or a 205.00 to return the phone?

I thought after the 30 days you can keep the phone when you cancel your contract? I may be wrong, so can someone correct me if I am?

Is there a way that I can get a discount on my monthly bill? If so, then I WILL DEFINITELY stay with AT&T and the iPhone.
Although you've already made up your mind, I'm surprised that nobody has answered this question. If your school provides you with an e-mail address, enter it here:
https://www.wireless.att.com/business/enrollment/

It'll tell you if you're eligible for a 10% educational discount or not.
