having just talked to somebody who uses 32 PS3s for computational work (and uses a myriad of Teslas for their work also - she says that the Teslas are many many times faster then the consumer models, and that F@H really can take advantage of the bandwidth/memory/frequency increases of the cards. make of that what you will - its extremely hard to find solid benchmarks.

32 PS3s! dang! i bet that was an interesting conversation.

well if i had a tesla, i wouldn't know how to get fah to use all that power. all i know to do is run the gpu client

oh yeh, makes for some very awsome topics - very knowledgeable!

ah well. doesnt matter, what sort of problems has F@H solved so far? and what do they intend to solve?

The way I look at it is that we might not be solving problems yet as far as medical diseases but we are building a base of knowledge that will lead to treatments down the road. It's really more basic science like learning to add and sutract before you go on to solve algebra problems. There is another folding project that was made into a game where you would help proteins fold better or fix them if they got stuck thereby giving researchers knowledge about how proteins might be fixed in the real world.

I am adding 32 dual cpu "westmere" nodes to our 200 plus Linux cluster at work with another 26 waiting for installation. Imagine what that could get for folding PPD!

dang! now that would be a killer system.

pretty darn cool! :D wish i understood it too, didnt realise there were so many projects on at the same time :\

yeah there is a lot going on.

thats true - good point. future development etc. to put things into perspective, i was talking to one of my friends who is becoming a doctor. for one protein there is 20,000+ parts that may make them up (or more), they might only know what 1 or 2 of these parts per protein. and there are millions and millions of proteins everywhere.. so its pretty important that they find out what everything does. i guess the cure for a lot of diseases is in there somewhere..

what GPUs do they have in them? :p thats the important thing! are you allowed to use them?

yeah there is a lot going on.

an insane amount! my numbers are slowly going up at least :)

Great job! How long has it taken to achieve that? I'm still quite a noob with this, I just got my 11,000 points lol.

well he has been a folding member since 03.17.06, but the last few million points have come much faster. he's probably doing close to 1 million points a month right now, if not more

Someone once said that we already knew everything there was to know... obviously not a very bright person.

These are the latest "westmere" cpu's from Intel with 6 cores each. and no I can't use them or any company computers for folding. They only get used heavily in the fall and winter for things like BLAST and a bunch of proprietary gene sequensing software.

sounds like something i would say actually

you are using CPUs for that type of thing   if BLAST is GPGPU/CUDA compliant, i would be taking advantage of that! if not then i guess Westmere is the way to go. sucks that you cant use them whilst they are idle :p

He is now #3 on the team as well, Congrats!

With you, twoodcc, being in second place now, Congrats!

One of the advantages of being on a small team is getting to the top faster! I would be a long way from the top if I were on some of the more popular teams...

I didn't mean to imlpy anything...

I know! but big companies are slow to adopt new tech and most of the other applications can't use gpu's anyway. Maybe in a few years they will be ready to get some gpu's.

BAHA don't worry about it i dont get offended by much

damn, thats so stupid. i am not joking when im saying you will have a 100x-1000x speed up in computing time* :(
terms and conditions apply, batteries not included

Yea I know... I've never asked anyone about gpu's so I think I'll ask someone if they have any plans for them, or even know what they are...

HA! "isnt that what you put in your car?" :p

they are worth it, you'd be silly to invest in CPUs if a GPU alternative is available. goodluck convincing the powers that be (if its feasible) ;)

thanks.

well this team used to be a little bigger, but we have fallen off a little. and you are still putting up some pretty big numbers. you would be a great addition to any team, and i'm glad you are on ours :)

Our numbers are up some at nearly 400K a day or 2.6M a week! That is up from a low of about 1.6 M a week a few weeks ago. It looks like BitGamer will still overtake us in about a month or so:(

yeah, our top group is doing well right now, but we need some new members. we really need some of those getting the new mac pros to join us

Mulling with the idea to replace my 2007 8 core by something newer... These new ones are expensive though. Wondering if these new 12 cores reach 100k PPD with BigAdv...

Or a refurb 2.93Ghz 8 cores (I think these can do 70k PPD).

the 2.93 ghz 12 core should hit 100K or more ppd. the 2.66 ghz would probably avg 75k ppd depending on the unit
