Nice rant considering you haven't seen/touched the thing in person yet while countless people including myself have posted in this thread and have.

I didn't buy the leather cases before from Apple or any company so I wasn't hoping for that so you assumed wrong about me and likely others.

This case is awful. I looked at it and touched it with my own hands. I gave it an honest chance by ordering it. I'm all for helping the environment, but it has to be done in ways where you don't pay 60 bucks for a piece of garbage.
I don't recall singling you out in any way but if you felt I did I apologize. I was referring to people that typically buy a leather case and were trying this as an alternative which doesn't sound like it describes you since you said you've never bought a leather case before. I'll get first hand experience on it later today when it arrives and I'll be expecting it to feel like a 60 dollar case. If it doesn't, I will return it. Hope you find the right case for you!

There’s a YouTube video out now that shows this case getting irreversibly scratched just by fingernails. This will probably go down as the least durable case Apple has ever made.
The same as a lot of leather products, that aren't coated and painted to the point they don’t patina very well either (take a bow Pro 12 onwards Apple leather). The hope it’s that, similar to leather that marks, those marks will fade and mix together as new ones are made. Kind of like leather.

We can’t have patina and a material that doesn’t mark. It’s one or the other.

The main worry at this stage is what happens to these cases if they get wet from something like a coffee spill. That could very well be game over!

Edit for typo’s.

Wrong (again). You can tell when something is a fragile piece of crap and that's what this is.

How's the durability look to you here, wise guy?

That doesn’t speak to the durability either. It’s a video where somebody deliberately destroyed it. If that had happened with him casually pulling it out of his pocket sure, but he pulled it apart, on purpose, to see how it was put together. At this stage it proves nothing.

Don’t get me wrong, these may end up being junk in the long term. But we cant know that until we’ve been actually using them. Versus a YouTuber who has destroyed one in order to make loads of money off of the hits he gets from people sharing his video all over the place.

Exactly what I said—the wallets slide right off the plastic case. Garbàge!
Has anyone compared it on a naked iPhone 12, 13, or 14?

I use an Apple leather wallet on a naked iPhone, and it would suck if these are slippier…

Perhaps part of the problem is that Apple has positioned this as the replacement for leather both in marketing and in price. First, you will have the diehard leather heads that will put their hands on it and instantly recoil in horror. Second, you will have people expecting a premium experience that get turned off by the build quality in general. Although......If I was Apple and planning a move from real leather to faux leather I would totally introduce some BS fabric thing in-between so that when I "bring back" the "pleather" everyone rejoices. Imagine the backlash from the purists if Apple had gone straight from real leather to faux.

I still think I am going to give this FineWoven an honest chance.
Same. I keep getting it out of the box wondering if I like it because it’s new or if I like it because I like it. I think I like it because I like it.

My leather wallet sticks to it fine it seems.
Yeah, my leather wallet sticks to my naked iPhone too. I’m just curious due to reports the FineWoven wallets slide off smooth plastic cases more easily, so I wonder if it’s the same with the smooth back glass on the iPhone.

It does. It’s not as secure as the leather. Returning mine

So many returns of the FW case. Whatever positive effect it had on the environment compared to leather (debatable in the first place) will be negated fast.

My spigen MagSafe wallet in fake leather feels 100000% better than this FW one

Unfortunately the FineWoven wallets appear to be far more slippery and are so bad he named them the worst MagSafe wallet so far…

Jump to the 1:12 minute mark to see how they hold up on a naked iPhone -

And this guy is a great YouTuber. A lot of solid unsponsored content. His good name is being besmirched by some here because for some unknown reason, they have decided to dedicate their lives to defending CrapWoven.

In the same way some have devoted theirs to saying it’s garbage after buying one and not even using it before returning.

That and going by a YouTube ‘review’. Remember when the Ultra came out? A lot of YouTubers saying how it was too big and expensive and looked stupid on the wrist (I think even MKBHD) yet every YouTuber a year on still seems to be wearing them. YouTubers are sensationalists who do it all for the views, because views = money. Unsponsored or not.

Like somebody cut it up for a YouTube video. Scratches are a concern (for the anal retentive…), but this topic specifically called out oil and dirt wear and tear. We haven’t seen these out in the wild testing long term finger oils and dirt.

So we can’t possibly know yet, and citing content creators (whose primary concern isn’t spreading information, but monetization) who don’t actually address the point here doesn’t make any point at all actually. This guy is just snarky, and clearly doesn’t understand material science or product design (scoffing at the name, alleging “cheapness” at the concept of padding that is clearly designed for comfort in the hand), he makes his money evoking emotion in people (like all content creators).

I feel like critical thinking skills and media literacy have been absolutely decimated in the internet age. Citing a video that doesn’t even address the *topic* at hand as evidence of something is…a bold move.

Something has seriously warped the mind of the public where they can no longer reason out motivations of content creators.

It’s not a hidden agenda that’s nefarious, it’s literally just the business model of social media: elicit emotion to drive clicks. There is no distinction in the business model as to whether that engagement is due to facts, lies, hyperbole, inducing anger/rage, or genuine skill in presentation (the video in this thread is well produced, a bit snarky for me but I understand why people respond to this guy).

For a hint: just look at any of the top YouTube channels and look at the thumbnails. All of them have a framing of joy or anger/disgust *whether that lines up with the actual content of the video or not*.

Without wishing to go too far off topic, the trend for those bloody selfies of disgust/joy/sadness etc in thumbnails is infuriating.

Yeah, I'm definitely in agreement here. "Look at this crappy case! I cut it all up for this video and now it's all cut up!! WTF, APPLE?"

Honestly, I think people are just freaking out because it's a different, largely unknown material. I'm going to give it a fair shot and see what I really think in a few months. I mean, my leather case has dings and scratches and stains all over it. It has MagSafe imprints, wallet imprints, spots worn off where my fingers touch a lot, all the things all cases end up having over time. It for sure doesn't look brand new. Just used in the way a wallet does.

I suspect FineWoven will wear similarly unless you make a habit of throwing it in puddles of stuff or work in dirty environments. If you just walk around and use your phone like the standard user does, I think FineWoven is going to end up being a popular option. You can all come back here and make fun of me if they're off the market by then. :)

I was really excited about the FineWoven cases. I hoped they would be more durable than Silicone, better looking and could be washed. Similar to Braided bands on Apple Watch.

Now that I'm seeing reviews... oh my god, even from online videos this looks like the cheapest, least durable piece of junk aritficial cloth. Silicone case it is. Mother nature won't be pleased, but I'll take one train per year more and the offset will be far more.

In fairness, he’s done that to himself by being guilty of the worst way to YouTube. Putting an image as a thumbnail of a product you’ve deliberately destroyed in a way absolutely nobody will do in real life, then offering a review based on that image, is a garbage way to create content.

Maybe he’s a good YouTuber, I don’t know and don’t care. If he keeps marketing his videos like this one, any discerning consumer will quickly put him on their ignore list.

Anyone else think this FineWoven material is gonna look and feel great for about 5 minutes before the slightest bit of oil and dirt stains it and ruins the texture? I'm really skeptical about this material's longevity.
What non-TPU case is resistant to oil & dirt stains?

I stick to a TPU case for personal hygiene reasons so I can wash it with water and soap.

Well said , I don’t trust any YouTube reviews anymore because they are all paid to like / promote the product and if they are not paid they will destroy it and make you think it’s total junk …. The one honest reviewer I miss is ( itsmemorphious)

*rolls eyes*

The guy who showed the case destruction has never once posted a sponsored video. Just because you don't like his findings, doesn't make it invalid.

Yeah probably be like alcantara. Feels nice for a week or two and then ends up… grotty.

I wonder what made Apple choose that material for the back and a different material for the sides. I have the black and it does seem cheap. Very disappointing this year
